143听books161听followersBernardo Atxaga (Joseba Irazu Garmendia, Asteasu, Guip煤zcoa, 1951) belongs to the young group of Basque writers that began publishing in his mother language, Euskara, in the Seventies. Graduated in Economics for the Bilbao University, he later studied Philosophy at the University of Barcelona.
His first short story, Ziutateaz was published in 1976 and his first book of poetry Etiopia in 1978. Both works received the National Critics Prize for the best works in the Basque language.
He cultivates most genres: poetry, radio, cinema scriptwriting, theatre, children's books, articles, short stories... His national 鈥揳nd soon after international鈥� recognition arrived with Obabakoak (1988) which, among other prizes, was awarded the National Literature Prize 1989 and that has been translated into more than twenty languages.
Many of his poems have also been translated into other languages and published by prestigious magazines such as Jahbuch der Lyrik, 1993, Die horen, 1995, Lichtungen, 1997 (Germany), Lyrikklubbss bibliotek, 1993 (Sweden), Vuelta, 1990 (Mexico), Linea d'ombra, 1992 (Italy) and others.

Gran libro. Aqu铆 hay un manejo de la narrativa sencillamente espectacular y tambi茅n en cierta manera novedoso. Se reflexiona sobre cuestiones de mucha profundidad pero a la vez desde una 贸ptica cotidiana, humilde, que recoge el sentir y las vivencias de la gente com煤n.
Me impact贸 mucho c贸mo todo lo desarrollado por el libro gira en torno a la geograf铆a, a un sitio en particular: Obaba. Un espacio ficticio pero posible, representativo de cualquiera de los peque帽os pueblos de provincia del Pa铆s Vasco. Todo en el libro remite a este elemento configuador de la identidad: desde el paisaje monta帽oso y agr铆cola hasta la formas de pensar, vivir y comportarse que tienen las personas. Obaba es abordada desde todos los enfoques posibles, ya sea del que naci贸 y creci贸 all铆 hasta el que va, siendo de otro lugar, a trabajar/residir en la zona una temporada.
El libro se divide en tres partes, compuestas (especialmente la primera y la tercera) de numerosos cuentos, pero todos ellos entretejidos, hilados entre si por ese factor com煤n que es el lugar y a su vez por otro de los pilares centrales de la obra (prevaleciente en su parte central) como lo es la memoria. Disfrut茅 much铆simo de todo el libro, pero la tercera parte me pareci贸 la mejor, compuesta de una narraci贸n central a partir de la que se desdoblan o introducen permanentemente narraciones "secundarias". En este sentido la compisici贸n me record贸 a Las mil y una noches y en ella Atxaga reivindica la importancia de escribir en euskera. Fortalecer la incipiente literatura vasca, y defender el idioma propio, representan formas de sostener la identidad, ese elemento aglutinante conformador de un nosotros que no necesariamente tiene que serlo en contraposici贸n a los dem谩s.
El autor explora al m谩ximo las diferentes posibilidades que ofrece el relato corto como forma de narrativa, pero m谩s all谩 de ello no deja de proponer una prosa muy po茅tica, preciosa, amena de leer en todo momento y que regala sentencias muy interesantes y profundas. Creo que este libro merece ser mucho m谩s conocido de lo que parece serlo, m谩s all谩 de que en su momento fue muy aclamado y premiado por la cr铆tica y el entorno literario de Espa帽a.

"Obaba" is a place, a Basque village. "Obabakoak" means the people and things of Obaba. originally written in Basque (an almost dead language, understood only by a few), it was later translated into Spanish where it was received with acclaim in Europe. This English version was a translation from the Spanish.
I felt I could have written this book myself. I had also lived in an "Obaba" during my younger years, an obscure town in a small island facing the Pacific Ocean. During those times the town had no electricity and we survived the tedium of our very slow lives by stories orally delivered. Whether it was morning, noon or nighttime you can find groups of men and women huddled in their favorite nook in the town, discussing recent events, local myths, the remembered dead and crazy ideas. My uncle Tata Teban, my father and his aswang friends--all masterful story-tellers with seemingly endless tales like those in this book, by the simple folks of Obaba.

Though tagged a novel, Obabakoak is better described as a series of fictions, tied together only by their setting in the village of Obaba. But each separate story is lovingly told, and the whole comes together to give the reader a great sense of place. Atxaga also runs certain themes throughout the book, with different apparitions through the various fictions, that come together also to give the book that sense of wholeness not present in certain collections of stories.
At its heart, I think Obabakoak is less a temple to the people of Obaba than it is to the act of storytelling itself. Common themes include the roundabout ways that people come to tell stories, the interruptions to stories being told (sometimes with other stories), and the simple human struggle to communicate and express. There is a significant portion of the book dedicated to what one might construe as literary theory, using both fictions and plain statements from characters to explain to the reader about the values that surround storytelling and how we decide what makes for a good story. The examination of storytelling that remains central throughout the book also allows Atxaga to weave casual fantasies into his reality--a very subtle mystical realism--which blend is also a common presence in any storytelling traditions.
This is not a book filled with overpowering emotions. And, to its credit, there are no bad guys or good guys. It is, instead, a much softer literary being, gently and subtly touching the reader (much the way we would come to expect from the people of Obaba), and always offering its characters the opportunity for self-redemption. I think it is one I will read from again and again.

Maravilloso libro de relatos ambientados en la regi贸n de Obaba, inventada aunque basada en la zona interior de Guip煤zcoa, de donde es el autor.鈦�
Algunos de los relatos se agrupan por bloques. Todos ellos guardan mensajes entre l铆neas, detr谩s de historias aparentemente cotidianas de las personas de la zona que viven bastante aisladas, aunque con cierto toque de suspense, y con tem谩ticas atemporales relacionadas con la propia vida y existencia.鈦�
Los relatos que m谩s me han gustado han sido los primeros, que hablan sobre c贸mo se viv铆a anta帽o en los peque帽os pueblos siendo sus habitantes pr谩cticamente analfabetos y muy supersticiosos.鈦�
Lo he le铆do en euskera y acudiendo a veces a la traducci贸n al castellano que realiza el propio autor.
Atxaga es un autor que ahora est谩 empezando a conseguir el reconocimiento que merece y que ha hecho much铆simo por enriquecer y darle vida al euskera. 鈦�

"La memoria, 驴c贸mo le dir铆a? S铆, es un poco arcaica, como el coraz贸n".
隆Qu茅 dif铆cil me resulta rese帽ar Obabakoak! Por una parte, porque es un libro complejo -si bien lo definen como una novela, para m铆 es m谩s una colecci贸n de cuentos ubicados en la tierra de Obaba- y por otra, porque me ha gustado much铆simo, as铆 que creo que mi rese帽a le har铆a poca justicia.
Leer este libro nos lleva a una tierra m谩gica, anclada al presente pero con una rica herencia de tradiciones y elementos fant谩sticos y algunas veces sobrenaturales. Cada una de las historias que compone este volumen est谩 perfectamente redondeada, y cumple su prop贸sito: sea 茅ste narrar la vida de un personaje o simplemente, describir un paisaje, un atardecer, o un momento espec铆fico. Si bien lo experimental no es malo, lo que admir茅 es que todas las historias tienen un hilo, una trama, y 茅ste se resuelve al final. Hay lugar para imaginar pero cada historia deja al lector satisfecho tras su conclusi贸n, incluso aunque hayan existido elementos m谩gicos y sobrenaturales.
Asimismo, Atxaga construye una atm贸sfera incre铆ble para cada una de sus narraciones, empezando con la estupenda historia deEsteban Werfell, un adolescente hijo de un emigrado alem谩n qui茅n crece en Obabakoak, en una casa se帽orial y con un padre autoritario. Un buen d铆a, tiene una alucinaci贸n en la iglesia en la que ve a una joven de su edad qui茅n de alguna manera le pide que la busque en la ciudad de Hamburgo, de donde tambi茅n es originario el padre. Entonces, los j贸venes comienzan una correspondencia que dura a帽os hasta que de pronto ambos empiezan a perder el inter茅s. Muchos a帽os despu茅s, Esteban se anima a buscar a su amor adolescente y descubrir la verdad tras su 'revelaci贸n'. En este cuento, todo parece gris -la vida del joven, la relaci贸n con su padre, la primera desilusi贸n amorosa y la revelaci贸n final, y no es solo por los acontecimientos sino por la atm贸sfera que el autor construye -una casa antigua, tardes lluviosas, una iglesia medieval, la llegada a una ciudad desconocida. Todos los cuentos tienen esta estructura, lo cual nos permite sumergirnos y caminar las calles de Obabakoa -o la localidad en las que se ubican, pues las historias no s贸lo se desarrollan ah铆.
El libro se divide en tres partes: Infancias, Nueve palabras en honor del pueblo de Villammediana y En busca de la 煤ltima palabra. Cada parte contiene historias que entrelazan la vida de los habitantes del pueblo, si bien no es un v铆nculo fuerte o clave en la narraci贸n. A veces es como si escuch谩ramos la vida de un personaje y posteriormente otro, quiz谩 un vecino, un conocido, retoma la palabra y contin煤a con una historia distinta.
En particular considero que la 煤ltima parte, En busca de la 煤ltima palabra, est谩 muy bien lograda. En 茅sta, dos hombres investigan un hecho que una fotograf铆a de la infancia revive y que involucra a dos ex compa帽eros, Ismael y Albino Mar铆a. Dicha fotograf铆a les recuerda que Ismael estaba obsesionado con los lagartos y el d铆a en que la tomaron, 茅l llevaba uno. A los pocos d铆as, Albino Mar铆a, el compa帽ero al lado de Ismael en la foto, comienza a perder la raz贸n. 驴A caso fue porque el lagarto se meti贸 en su o铆do y lo trastorn贸? Esto es lo que los protagonistas as铆 lo creen y comienzan a investigar. Dicha b煤squeda los lleva a encontrarse con el t铆o del narrador, a qui茅n conocen como el T铆o de Montevideo por haber vivido en Am茅rica y a buscar al propio Ismael. El t铆o -amante de la literatura y un tanto exc茅ntrico- invita a su sobrino a reflexionar sobre la sospecha que tiene al tiempo que se prepara para su sesi贸n literaria de un domingo cualquiera. Esta b煤squeda -de la 煤ltima palabra- lleva a ambos amigos a contarse distintas historias y a encontrar personajes con las propias. Si bien hubo un momento que la an茅cdota central -sobre Ismael y sus lagartos aletargadores- se perd铆a (en momentos pens茅, 驴cu谩ndo sabremos la verdad?) y me desper茅 un poco, al final todos las dem谩s historias val铆an la pena por su gran calidad literaria. Sin duda, la t茅cnica escogida por el autor recuerda un poco a la estructura de Las Mil y Una Noches, en donde historias tras historia nos adentramos a mundos tan diferentes antes de conocer el desenlace principal. Y en este fluir, se encuentras narraciones extraordinarias como De Soltera, Laura Sligo(quiz谩 mi cuento favorito), Para escribir un cuento en cinco minutos, Klaus Hanh, y Margarete y Henirch, Gemelos, entre otros.
Por separado, cada cuento es una peque帽a joya literaria, que nos permite perdernos en universos m谩gicos, ya sea en Obaba, en Hamburgo, o en la antigua Persia o China. Adem谩s de la ambientaci贸n, las historias describen la psicolog铆a humana en la forma de deseos, fantas铆as y amores frustrados.
Este libro contiene una introducci贸n breve sobre la literatura vasca -de la cual, en personal, yo no ten铆a conocimiento- y en la cual se rescata la gran aportaci贸n de Atxaga, entre otros, toda vez que se publica poco en euskera. Creo que adem谩s del homenaje que el autor hace a su tierra, al Pa铆s Vasco, Atxaga tambi茅n hace un homenaje personal, sentido, honesto, a la literatura, a su poder de sumergirnos en mundos lejanos y a veces fant谩sticos, sin dudar un minuto que lo que ah铆 sucede, puede ser real... en qu茅 podr铆amos ser nosotros en cualquier d铆a de nuestras vidas.

Colecci贸n de relatos cercanos al realismo m谩gico que nos transportan a la imaginaria localidad vasca de Obaba, un lugar donde la magia y el folclore se dan la mano para envolver de misterio la vida de sus habitantes. Un libro que juega con todo tipo de referencias metatextuales y que confirma la fama de su autor, uno de los m谩ximos referentes de la literatura 肠辞苍迟别尘辫辞谤谩苍别补 en euskera.

this is a wholly engaging novel, of love, cultural preservation, and the power of narrative - all blended with an early hemingway prose infused with a healthy dose of magical realism (and only the very best parts of this much maligned style). atxaga examines not only what makes stories appealling; but, more importantly, why narrative endures. this is really a hermetically sealed book (which could be called a novel, or interconnected short stories, depending on if you think a place can be a protagonist for a whole novel). it contains analysis of the very stories it's telling as well as an explanation as to why these stories deserve telling. i really don't want to delve to much into the whole meaning of the book as it's such a great reading experience; it is something wholly different, which stands as a modern day 'arabian nights', or a literary basque bible. either way it is a document that stands as a testament to a love of culture, a love of literature and - by extention and very definition - a love of man. this is easily one of the best ten books i've ever read, comparable with 'a death in the family', 'the known world', or 'infinite jest', not in theme, of course, but in use of literature as love. highly recommended!

En el pueblecito norte帽o imaginario de Obaba se enmarca esta historia de narraciones cortas entrelazadas. Cuentos muy distintos, algunos buen铆simos, otros no tanto, pero todos ellos merecen la pena.

Il gioco dell'oca come intenzione di vita e rivendicazione della cultura basca
Letto casualmente - tirando i dadi sulla lista de "i 1001 libri da leggere almeno una volta nella vita" - scopro a fine della lettura di questa opera meta-letteraria (La associate a Calvino? Associate bene), che i dadi sono stati presenti anche nelle mani dell'autore
Ho sentito dire che il Gioco dell鈥橭ca rappresenta, come i racconti tradizionali, un determinato modo di intendere la vita; che 猫 la descrizione delle opere e dei giorni, e di tutto quello che dobbiamo superare in questo mondo; che 猫 insomma una descrizione e una metafora. Quanto ci sia di vero in questa teoria, lo pu貌 constatare chiunque abbia presente la tavola e le regole del gioco, poich茅 sia la tavola, sia le regole dimostrano che la vita 猫 essenzialmente un viaggio pieno di ostacoli, e sempre che i dadi 鈥� il fato 鈥� ci siano favorevoli, 猫 possibile avanzare e raggiungere la casella finale dove ci attende la Grande Oca Madre.
Ridurre il libro a una concatenazione di racconti, sarebbe un errore.
Lo si pu貌 incentrare in 3 macro aree:
1) 鈥泪苍蹿补苍锄颈别鈥�
Il primo nucleo affronta l'inizio come se fosse l'inizio di uno straniero costretto a cimentarsi con l'arretratezza, le credenze e le chiusure di Obaba. Ha un che di gotico e spiccano le storie di un padre ossessivo, la solitudine di una giovane insegnate e un ragazzino scomparso nella foresta.
Probabilmente la parte meno attraente o meno riuscita.
2) 鈥淣ove parole in onore del paese di Villamediana鈥�
Il viaggio. La scoperta. La sensazione di disagio lascia spazio a una nuova atmosfera.
La chiave dell'isola racchiusa in questo dialogo
芦una diga che d脿 vita al nostro spirito, ma ha bisogno di canali di scolo per non straripare禄
芦Allora, quanto si deve ricordare?禄
芦N茅 poco, n茅 molto. Nove parole.禄
Parte in cui si riscopre l'importanza dell'appartenenza su quanto si 猫 lasciato alle spalle.
3) 鈥淚n cerca dell鈥檜ltima parola鈥�.
Come nel gioco dell'oca, si torna al Via. Da Obaba a Obaba. Ma l'uguaglianza finisce qui.
Qui si scomoda Borges. Arriva la meta-narrazione in un profluvio di scimmiottamenti di voci famose e conosciute nelle letteratura mondiale (In post lettura sono andato a cercare chi fossero). Tramite lo zio letterato della voce narrante si arriva a filosofeggiare, con ironia, sul concetto di originalit脿 e plagio, visti entrambi sotto altre vesti
- "Breve esposizione sul metodo per plagiare bene"
- "Un crepaccio nelle neve gelata"
Questi due racconti da soli, valgono la lettura dell'intero romanzo.
Il tre torna anche nel sottolineare quelle che sono le parole messaggere del romanzo: identit脿, memoria e rivendicazione.
Scrivere una storia che non 猫 stata gi脿 scritta 猫 impossibile. Ma ricordare quanto 猫 stato scritto portando alla luce nuovi testi 猫 il compito e il ruolo di ogni scrittore.

This was a very interesting book. On one level it's a collection of short stories that are only slightly related to each other by their settings - most taking place in Obaba (a Basque village) or Hamburg - but it's more than that. Atxaga has intertwined thoughts on writing, literary interpretation, and what makes story good with tales that typify these thoughts. These stories were entertaining and often thought-provoking.
Other reviewers have commented that there is a bit of magic realism in Obabakoak, but I would disagree. I suppose it depends on one's definition of the term, but I think of magic realism as referring to the types of stories written by authors like Borges, in which fantastic things - things that could not possibly happen in our world because they defy its physics, biology, or technological possibilities - are mixed in with events that are perfectly possible in real life. These magical elements are told in a straightforward manner, as if they were part of reality, and take place in settings we are familiar with, not in some imagined future or made-up world. Some of the stories in Obabakoak, especially the main storyline of "In Search of the Last Word," which, with its embedded short stories, accounts for about half of the book, have components or endings that seem to push the boundaries of what might actually occur in real life. However, when examined, it can be seen that they never truly leave the realm of reality.
The very end, in particular, may seem a little contrived, but it is something that could happen and, in fact, falls in line with some of the thoughts on good stories expounded upon by the characters themselves:
"Oh, I agree, I think a good ending's indispensable. An ending that's both a consequence of everything that's come before and something else besides."

Asko gustatu zitzaidan hasieran baina azken kontakizunak nahiko astunak egin zaizkit. Istorio bakoitza bere aldetik ipuin atsegin eta biribila da, baina gainera guztiak elkarrekin nolabait lotuta azaltzen dira. Polita iruditzen zait nola uzten dituen Atxagak azkeneraino plot twist guztiak, baina beti zerbait iradokitzen.
Post tenebras spero lucem oso polita iruditu zitzaidan. Maistraren eta mugatseko morroi ttikiaren istorioak nola gurutzatzen diren, deskribapenak, gutunak, aldaketak maistraren bihotzean...
"Maistrari, une hartan, bere bihotz etsiaren esanak iristen zitzaizkion, eta sumatzen zuen egiten ari zenaren zuhurtasunik eza; baina bere baitako indar haiek askoz ozenkiago mintzatzen zitzaizkion, eta hurbilagotik, belarrira ia, eta ez arduratzeko kontseilatzen zioten; sukalde hartaz kanpo gelditzen zen guztiak ez zuela aintzakotzat hartzea merezi 鈥擜lbaniako auzuneak, bere kostaldeko herriak, munduak berak".

Awhile ago I had read The Accordionist鈥檚 Son by Bernardo Atxaga. That was quite the story. Then I came across this list by the Guardian of the ten best books set in Spain and Obabakoak was on the list.
Obabakoak. Those people from Obaba. Obaba: an imaginary place in the Basque Country. Euskal Herria. El Pa铆s Vasco.
Although it seems like a collection of short stories (it is), there is a thin line (a very thin) that binds them together. The book is divided into three sections: Infancias (childhoods); Nueve palabras en honor del pueblo de Villamediana (Nine words in honor of the village of Villamediana); and En busca de la 煤ltima palabra (In search for the final word).
The stories in Infancias are loosely connected - all reveal something missing in the lives of the main characters. Esteban Wefell recalls a past love from his time in Hamburg; the revealing letter from the priest Lizardi tells the story of a boy who goes missing at the same time that a wild boar terrorizes the town; the arrival of the train passing every night has two sides of the story as told from two women, Katharina and Marie.
Nine words are actually nine stories that tell the one year stay of Mart铆n, who stays on the island of Villamediana. He in turn learns to appreciate these people in a series of incidents as he learns about himself.
But the vast majority of the book is the third section. A young man returns to Obaba in search of the characters in a primary school photo. If you look closely, a young Ismael is holding a small lizard up to the ear of Albino Marie, who after the photo becomes crazy. Why did he do this? Did the lizard enter the ear and eat his brain as the author claims?
In the search for these old school mates, his uncle is invited along who is teaching his nephew the art of story telling. There are twenty stories as well as the actual search for the lizard incident. Along the way, we make the connections to several of the previous stories. Things start to fall into place.
The stories are, without a doubt, very entertaining. In fact, I often lost myself in the absurdity or the believability of each one. As for the meaning of the book, I might put forth my own thought - it鈥檚 all about the act of story telling. As readers, we love a good story. The act of a good writer is to keep us entertained. On all accounts, Atxaga succeeds.
This edition includes several essays by Atxaga that explains Obaba, the Basque language and it鈥檚 people and a 鈥渟ort of鈥� autobiography. I can certainly say this helps a lot.
The Basque people are a proud people that during the 20th century faced huge challenges. Hitler was allowed to bomb Guernika as Franco saw the Basques as traitors and stopped all teaching in schools of their own language. In 1980, Euskal Herria or Basque Country was formed to continue their language and customs by the Spanish people. Bernardo Atxaga writes in Basque and translates his own books to Spanish. Although the focus of his work is the Basque people, his stories are very universal.
After reading two of his books, I must say I am very impressed with his work and hope to read more.
A full five stars. I can see why that book is on the list.

Uno de mis libros favoritos y una de las obras que m谩s me han animado a escribir. Recuerdo que lo que me fascin贸 de 茅l en el momento en que lo le铆 por primera vez es la forma en que los relatos conectan entre s铆 y construyen una nueva obra que es m谩s que la suma de todos los cuentos por separado. Imagino que la traducci贸n al castellano hace que se pierda un poco el esp铆ritu de lo que Atxaga quiere contar en su recreaci贸n del mundo rural vasco, pero con todo y eso la huella que dej贸 en mi sigue estando presente, sobre todo porque la tem谩tica del lento paso del tiempo y la preservaci贸n de la cultura propia como causa es algo que se siente a lo largo de todo el libro a pesar de estar tratado de forma muy sutil y elegante. Esto hace que se sienta como una obra universal y una a la que siempre da gusto regresar de cuando en cuando.

Aunque esta colecci贸n de cuentos no estuvo mala, tampoco encontr茅 algo particularmente especial en ella. Todos los cuentos revuelven alrededor del pueblo de Obaba y cubren desde escolares hasta literatos. Como toda colecci贸n algunos cuentos fueron m谩s interesantes que otros, pero incluso los m谩s amenos no llegaron a mantener mi atenci贸n. Estoy seguro que habr谩 lectores que se vean identificados en varios de estos cuentos o disfruten de los vaivenes de la vida que narran, pero lamentablemente yo no fui uno de esos.

There is merit in the claim that Euskara, the oldest of the known languages, is the most difficult to learn; to either write or read, let alone to speak. That attempting to do so is a linguistic challenge. However, author Bernardo Atxaga, a Basque writer of poetry, film scripts, children's books, magazine articles, and short stories, confronts this formable task in his published (English translation) 1988 novel, OBABAKOAK.
In doing so, he not only won Spain's National Prize for Literature, but became a pioneer. In forwarding this effort he provides to litt茅rateurs more than just a novel, or a collection of short stories and allegories, and even more than just a passionate appeal for a recrudescent appreciation of a unique culture; one that has thrived on its oral tradition of story telling for centuries; one that has barely kept this language, Euskara, alive.
Instead, his provision on its base level, tells of a remote Basque village called Obaba and of the people who live there; some native, others immigrants, some real, some fictitious or some simply hiding their identities. In this mise en sc猫ne, the novel鈥檚 first chapters mostly become a collection of short stories with one apparent connection, the village itself, with subtle crossovers of the characters as well . . .

Then, beyond these stories there emerges a second layer; a new, larger narrative shifting to a congenitally divisive tale about an Uncle, his Nephew, his Friend and a mysterious stranger; all writers themselves and sharing a passion for the reading each other鈥檚 work. After which, a ritual begins for dining, contemplation, then discussion, analyzing, and ultimately, a quest to go In Search Of The Last Word. This now comprises the second half of the novel, and for the characters, what truly makes a 鈥�good story.鈥�
Beginning here, it is in this central, tertiary plane that the scrutiny of any aspiring writer will be enchanted, and subsequently, have their attention assaulted with new revelations. In the chapter Regarding Stories, this writers katch reach conclusions that reveal an evident parallel between stories and poems; that both derive successfully from "oral traditions", they "tend to be short", and are "intensely meaningful". That the key lies in the author鈥檚 eye in seeing things, in "their own experiences", and then extracting and expressing those "essential things that will have universal appeal". That a good story is sometimes nothing more than a simple "arithmetical operation"; additions (happy endings) and subtractions (tragic ends) of such elements as love, hate, hope, desire, honour (sic), etc. And finally, that a "good story" requires a good ending; one that is "both consequential of all that came before, and with that ultimate, definitive event" (e.g a birth, or a death).
But, of all the theories posited by these characters鈥攊ndeed the most extraordinary鈥� are in the chapters on How To Plagiarise(sic), and How To Write a Story in Five Minutes. One comes away with the suspicion that these, and similar chapters, were specifically ordained to inspire the reader to engage in the very type of dynamic debate that the author had just narrated; a subtle yet effective trait of the Basque people.
Finally, if there are any reservations in reading OBABAKOAK , they may come from the often-common criticism of (lost in the) translation; in this case, into English. At times, the dialogue is childishly awkward and simplistic; thick with overstatement of ideas or of excessively polite social posturing. This should come as no surprise. Again, the core intention of this novel was to produce a work of literature in the Basque language; something that has been historically rare. To do so today, as described in the Prologue, is still difficult; readership would be uncertain. Also, that it was necessary to apply 鈥�verbs, structures of its relative clauses鈥� and words that 鈥�have no sisters anywhere on earth.鈥� To that end 鈥攂eing necessary to first translate into Spanish, and then English鈥� this book鈥檚 success has been obvious, and any minor awkwardness or simplicity in its dialogue can easily be overlooked in favor of its beneficial content.
In OBABAKOAK , author Bernardo Atxaga, and translator Margaret Jull Costa have provided a unique, mosaic, and multileveled work of historical fiction, and within it, a treatise for the aspiring creative writer, and a continuance of a long overdue appreciation for the Basque people and their love for telling a good story.

Tengo un problema con los libros de relatos: no he conseguido jam谩s leer uno que, al terminar la 煤ltima p谩gina del 煤ltimo de los textos propuestos, me quede con la sensaci贸n plena de felicidad, cuando no se torna en decepci贸n (en valores m谩s o menos absolutos). No me refiero a compendios de relatos de un autor, como es el caso de Cuentos Completos de Edgar Allan Poe o de Ant贸n Ch茅jov (ambos en ediciones magn铆ficas en espa帽ol a cargo de la editorial P谩ginas de Espuma), sino a libros proyectados como tales a base de relatos cortos. El caso m谩s flagrante de mi experiencia lectora fue el de El Aleph de Borges que me aburri贸 hasta el tedio (de esos libros que te excluyen desde el primer momento). Reconozco, no obstante, que, aunque sea por la fama que le precede, tengo que darle una segunda oportunidad.鈥〦n el caso que nos ocupa fue Obabakoak de Bernardo Atxaga el que consigui贸 que un libro de relatos volviera a decepcionarme. Como tengo por costumbre empezar a leer un libro nuevo de la forma m谩s 鈥渧irgen鈥� posible (intento no leer ni la contraportada), todo lo que sab铆a de este texto es que la trama se desarrollaba en los alrededores de un pueblo vasco (el ficticio Obaba - hubiera preferido que fuera real). Mi mente, entonces, comenz贸 a bosquejar oscuras zonas de inh贸spitas arboledas, historias llenas de leyendas y tradiciones rurales, bellas descripciones de paisajes coloridos, de aromas frescos y h煤medos. Y algo as铆 me encontr茅 en las primeras p谩ginas del libro. Esteban Werfell se halla en una l贸brega habitaci贸n con paredes atestadas de libros e iluminada por una ventana desde la que ve un parque y un estanque con cisnes. Fuera es invierno. Esto es lo que buscaba. Esto es lo que me hab铆a estado esperando. Ah铆 ten铆a el subid贸n de la lectura de un bello relato unida al especial aliciente que tienen para m铆 los libros en los que los propios libros tienen un papel especial.鈥�(Advierto que, a partir de aqu铆, en este comentario destripo un poco el libro, lo pongo f谩cil: 鈥渙jo spoilers鈥�)鈥〢txaga contin煤a las p谩ginas con la trama de Werfell, no muy original, bastante predecible, pero muy bella. Vemos a Werfell escribir, recordar, a帽orar. Nos habla de su infancia, de curas de pueblo, de cartas manuscritas, de conversaciones padre e hijo y de desilusiones tard铆as. Y, de repente, unas pocas p谩ginas despu茅s, 隆zas!, la historia de Werfell se interrumpe de sopet贸n y el texto bello, descriptivo, pausado y emotivo, se convierte sin venir a cuento en una especie de, de verdad que no s茅 como describirlo, an谩lisis de una carta parcialmente ilegible de un can贸nigo relatando (a la antigua) una especie de leyenda. Luego, Atxaga, contin煤a con otra buena historia sobre maestras de pueblo que se sienten fuera de lugar, cuya vida no es lo deseado y que ponen toda su alma en intentar no desesperar. Acaba de forma igualmente repentina para, tras unos cuantos relatos m谩s de diferente car谩cter, estilo e 铆ndole, que no han dejado huella alguna en mi memoria m谩s all谩 de su existencia, ocupar la mitad restante del libro en una matrioska deforme, cuyas piezas no encajan correctamente, y que, siguiendo el juego con el s铆mil, cuando abres a la primera mu帽eca rusa de madera, encuentras no ya otra m谩s peque帽a sino, consecutivamente, un le贸n, un pedrusco, una bicicleta rota, un 谩rbol quemado, un ind铆gena con carcaj, 鈥� 鈥�, hasta llegar a la pieza m谩s peque帽a que es el emoticono de la pedorreta 馃槢 (eso o un corte de mangas, lo que se prefiera). Esa es la sensaci贸n que me dej贸 el 煤ltimo "megarrelato" de Obabakoak. Me explico. Partiendo del hallazgo de una fotograf铆a a alumnos de escuela se desarrolla una trama incoherente en la que, ampar谩ndose en hacer relatar diferentes cuentos (contadores de cuentos contando cuentos que cuentan cuentos) a diferentes personajes pasamos de estar en Obaba, a transportarnos al palacio de un tal Wei Lie o ser adoctrinados en la flora y fauna (con interminables enumeraciones) de la Amazonia. Sin ning煤n hilo conectivo aparente, sin ninguna necesidad y, en mi opini贸n, ninguna atracci贸n. Las conversaciones de los personajes de este 煤ltimo relato destilan tal erudici贸n mal interpretada que hacen recordar a los intelectuales del P茅ndulo de Foucault pero sin la gracia y el resplandor que los envolv铆a, convirtiendo a los de Atxaga en simples parlanchines.鈥㏄ocas sensaciones hay tan descorazonadoras como la que te deja un libro que no te acaba de atrapar.
