I think I is a new style in writing in general. The author here mixed the regular narration with diaries and book chapters. The third part of the novel is really interesting because a complete and tightly built book was formed to answer some questions of the two previous parts and to make more questions endlessly.
The novel displays the last days of the imaginary Egyptian scientist Mohammed Abdullah who discovered the secret of life and immortality. Devil-the devil himself-revises his plan to spoil humanity and rethinks all his strategy, he decides to escape outside the universal God's plan of destiny and live forever free. here, the plot became more complicated because this exactly was the dream of the scientist. Although having the same ambition, the scientist and the devil are on the contrary sides. The scientist is very despaired and frightened from the devil, whence the horror element.
Horror element needs from us a bit longer focusing. Fear is the essential question in this work, but it is not presented as a simple feeling or a bipolar relation. Fear comes from the idea of the evil, the mere idea of trying to escape from God' destiny and from all miscellaneous illusions about the OUTSIDE, What could be found on the other side? In an awesome phrase the author says: "On the same day (28th March 1968)Yuri Gagarin was killed.. He went up but did not see God, then what did he see?" Here we find the fear from the abstract idea of the outside as mentioned before.
Horror in this work, being caused by ideas not incorporated entities, is a new kind. It is a philosophical horror.
