I'm not sure I'm even going to finish this book all the way to the end. I really wanted to like it because Judith Orloff is such a well-known name in the world of energy healing, but this book is way more about Orloff than it is a presentation on energy and how to recognize it or work with it. I found myself annoyed with how much Orloff inserts her own gifts and life experiences as an intuitive as anecdotal reasons for and evidence of the effectiveness of her advice while relying on her professional training and credentials as a psychotherapist as the reason why we should listen to her and take her seriously. Pick one or the other, because the professional training isn't where she got her energy knowledge. The way the book reads, Orloff (perhaps unintentionally) makes it sound like her advice about boundaries and discernment rise directly from her intuitive perceptions rather than her therapist training, and that the advice she imparts is unique, when in fact so much of the useful strategies in the book can be found in many other sources. Also, there's a bit of a "far out vibe" (the fact that she uses the word "vibe" to describe things as a therapist, for example) that I can't relate to. In the many many anecdotes Orloff uses to illustrate some life problem, she falls back on explaining that the problems and their solutions come from various kinds of negative or positive "vibes", and if you really look at it, she can't explain how that works or how to change it, even though she's come up with all sorts of descriptors that have helped her to organize and explain her world view. What she does is she gives you a whole host of strategies to try until something causes a shift back to good or inspiration - basically, hit or miss.
鈥淗ave you every came home from work feeling completely worn out? Have you ever felt suddenly depressed and overwhelmed after talking to that relative that is constantly complaining? Do you ever eat food that you know is unhealthy because you think it'll make you feel better?
Positive Energy examines the concept of energy. This book draws a direct connection between energy and the way we live. When we eat foods that give us energy, make use of our own daily energy patterns, and seek out positive people in our lives we become naturally more energetic, able to cope with stress, and become more creative. Conversely, when we push ourselves beyond our natural energy limits, take on the emotional baggage of others, and ignore our own needs we automatically become depressed, overwhelmed, and fearful.
Positive Energy details ten different strategies to increase healthy energy and decrease harmful energy. These strategies range from fairly obvious answers such as discovering personal self worth and adopting a healthy energy creating diet to less obvious solutions such as recognizing that we are unconsciously taking on the emotional baggage of others. I didn't realize how easily I was taking on the baggage of others without even a conscious thought of what it could be doing to my energy level.
An awakening force of our hidden inner intuition, this kind of book is needed in today's rush-through world. After reading it, I become more conscious of my own precious energy, how to conserve it and expend it, as well as how to avoid other people and situations that are energy draining. This book will be an excellent investment for anyone's mental health!
Two things that made me rate this book lower than I probably would normally have were:
1) I purchased this as a 'cheapy' audio book from B&N. While I usually LOVE audio books (they are perfect to work out to), this was not one of my best choices. The content was totally worthy of reading, it had GREAT advice, BUT...when you have sort of a 'reference' book with recipes for success, it's always great to go back and review. Difficult to do with an audio book.
2) Something about this woman annoyed me a bit. She was just a bit too 'new-agey' for me. Again, some GREAT advice for dealing with your frustration, anger, depression and finding ways to rejuvinate are within the pages of this book, but just a little too much 'California Dreamin' inside. Judith Orloff was also the reader of her own book, and she had a voice that I didn't find overly pleasing to listen to.
It's funny to hate a book about positive energy. However I got the audio book and the sound of the authors voice was so whiney, it was literally draining the positive energy I had. Also this audio book has meditation which is not great for me since I listen to all my audio books in the car.
Also it was ridiculous how many types of energy vampires she listed. Based on her definition everyone is a energy vampire at some point.
Positive energy, the awareness of, and ability to manage it is enormously important for anyone who wants to become or stay healthy. However, this extremely lengthy book falls short. Some points that could be made in a couple of sentences to offer some value to the reader are drawn out seemingly without end. The content itself offers very little a person who is even slightly aware of energy doesn't already know and expects the reader to read/listen to how if you are angry and you are sitting next to a fax machine, your bad energy will likely make the fax machine malfunction. The author often refers to how subtle energies in everything that surrounds us impact us. This is no doubt true, yet when it comes to a discussion on the energies in food she talks about meat without ever acknowledging the energy in such a product from a living being who likely experiences life at a factory farm and the fear and terror of transport and slaughter. She suggests you hold the piece of meat in your hand and concentrate on its 'feel'. The fact that the author goes into depth on he subject of a machine's energy and how it can influence you and vice versa but leaves out the energy of living beings who have been through the worst imaginable, is incomplete, heartless, and ignorant at best. This book cannot be recommended.
I loved certain parts of this book, underlining and highlighting madly; however others seemed like a rehash of information I could get anywhere (eat organic whole food). On the whole, I did get a lot out of it. I generally don't like books that are too like a memoir (chock full of the author's anecdotes and personal experiences), but I had to give Orloff some leeway here since she is a physician and a practitioner. But the chatty, familiar style was a little much for me. That's a personal taste, other people might enjoy it.
I just purchased her most recent book (about empaths), so I'm continuing on with the author.
Awaken Intuition and Rejuvenate Yourself Find a Nurturing Spiritual Path Design an Energy-Aware Approach to Diet, Exercise, and Health Generate Positive Emotional Energy to Counter Negativity Develop a Heart-Centered Sexuality Open Yourself to the Flow of Creativity and Inspiration Celebrate the Sacredness of Laughter, Pampering, and The Replenishment of Retreat Attract Positive People and Situations Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires Create Abundance.
Good book but not meant for one sitting. I will definately revisit it.
I initially decided to read this book because the Author is a psychiatrist and all her books have very good ratings (almost 5 stars by hundreds of reviewers). However, I was pretty disappointed. There is nothing in this book that a normal well rounded person doesnt already know. AIso, I find that the author refers to her self and her opinions and experiences way too much...
This book was written in 2004 (almost 20 years ago). The book contains 10 chapters and has 438 pages. The sentences were easy to read and were well written. On the contrary, this book is a little bit outdated to me as was written almost two decades ago and never updated. The author speaks a lot about her "I" mode. The title of the book was appealing, but not a content itself to me. I got so much annoyed at the half of the book. There are so much better ways to learn about the positive energy through the gurus Esther Hicks, Tony Robbins, Mooji, Matthew Hussey, Louise Hay, Jim Rohn, Joe Dispenza, NLP and so on.
This was interesting, but not something that I would recommend to everyone. The author spends a lot of time talking about what to do if you鈥檙e an intuitive empath, which makes the title and subject of this book seem deceiving. However, the sections on energy 鈥渧ampires鈥 were enlightening. I came away from listening to those sections reevaluating how the things I say can potentially suck energy from others, which is probably an exercise everyone should experience.
A highly informative book that helps to relieve fatigue and stress. I highlighted several tips and re-read this book twice before I bought it. Dr. Orloff offers practical advice to relieve the stress and to be the best of your true spirit. I would recommend to read this book by chapters to understand and process this information. An excellent read for those who love self improvement books!
This was not the title of the book I listened to by Judith from Sounds True, but it always changing to this title when I select the 鈥淧ositive Energy Practices鈥 book.
If you鈥檝e ever read any of this author鈥檚 books then you won鈥檛 find anything new in this one鈥擨 always love a refresher though. For empaths who aren鈥檛 big readers or are beginners working with energy, this is a nice starting point.
This book was uplifting. I have recommended to people on Facebook and at work. Is it worth it absolutely? This author gives many examples and has interviewed many celebrities. I even added using my stones and strengths of Charkra to help me with my positive energy.
Audio CD - has some insights, but her voice is, um, grating? Monotone? It had my mind going everywhere else but listening. Somewhat pedantic as well and "counselor-ish" where she knows it all ... book is probably better.
I randomly found this book in a 鈥渇ree library鈥 in my neighborhood. I am a fan of Dr Orloff so immediately grabbed it. This books is full of great info-especially for those of us that are energetically sensitive. So many great tips and tools to improve our lives. This book is a gift!
I read this book years ago and recently reread it. It's great insight into handling our energy and handling those lesser energies, like fear and stress.
Differs from most other self-help works in the way that it is truly methodical, well structured and studded with straight forward practices. Found this very very helpful.
