Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic, considered a leading figure in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. Sartre was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism (and phenomenology). His work has influenced sociology, critical theory, post-colonial theory, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature despite attempting to refuse it, saying that he always declined official honors and that "a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution." Sartre held an open relationship with prominent feminist and fellow existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the cultural and social assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyles and thought. The conflict between oppressive, spiritually destructive conformity (mauvaise foi, literally, 'bad faith') and an "authentic" way of "being" became the dominant theme of Sartre's early work, a theme embodied in his principal philosophical work Being and Nothingness (L'脢tre et le N茅ant, 1943). Sartre's introduction to his philosophy is his work Existentialism Is a Humanism (L'existentialisme est un humanisme, 1946), originally presented as a lecture.
La Putain Respectueuse = The Respectful Prostitute, Jean-Paul Sartre
The Respectful Prostitute, is a French play by Jean-Paul Sartre, written in 1946, which observes a woman, a prostitute, caught up in a racially tense period of American history. The audience understands that there has been an incident on a train with said woman involved, but also a black man on whom the blame is laid by the prejudiced law enforcers. What comes to the viewer's realization is that a white man instigated an attack, but it is in the interests of the law to preserve the perception of the white person at the expense of the black "devil".
Respectful Prostitute By Jean-Paul Sartre The father of Existential Philosophy An Amazing Play that you can end in one setting only, and think of every single sentence you read after finishing it! We have a prostitute who is a moralist, she like every human being can be right and can be wrong, committing a sin, or Something that is frowned upon Socially, Doesn't really mean you would do every single sin or wrong deed in the book, Its relative from a person to another. The play's plot is about a prostitute who gets asked by a rich family in the city she arrived at recently, to commit perjury, to save a member of their family, and they want to frame a black man instead of him. The prostitute commits adultery every single night, to earn her keep, but she refuses to commit perjury in the court of law! It really ticked me off honestly that they managed to persuade her by honeyed talk, and now they are all waiting for him to get out safe and sound... The play is all about morals, even though the name might be shocking for some, it explores the philosophy of morals, and wrong and right, and the philosophy of the fact that we are all incomplete we are not perfect, but that's completely fine we are only human, There is no one who is completely evil, and there is no one who is completely good either, and we should never judge a person for a single aspect or mistake of his existence. The play also presents the case of racism, in its most volatile period in our human history, and it showed how the racists viewed black people, my only issue was it didn't show The White people who were sympathizers with the case, and joined the fight, even if few, they were there. (i remember seeing a movie that showed these kind and sensible individuals) For us living in This Era, we might be unable to imagine that yes there was a time, where white people looked at black people that they have less standing than them, or even that they are less humans! and that they were created to be slaves, i was really impressed how the black man in the story viewed himself! Because of how everyone was looking at him, he ended up believing that they were right! A lot of people believed that, the social revolution was ignited by cultured black people who taught everyone their worth, and inspired everyone to fight for their freedom, because we are all humans on equal standing, no one is better than the other. Read this and wish with me that one day, there will be no one who is left in the darkness and hate of racism, that no one will suffer from it, that no one however different they might be, color, language, accent, sexual preference, who looks different than, or who has an illness, for we were all dealt the same hand for being in this world, and we only have each other till our journey is over.
The Respectful Prostitute is a very powerful play. It is an indictment on our failing justice system. Let me give you an example of a local problem in my country. A well wisher comes to us with a generous idea of helping street kids. He establishes a home for them and offers them food. Suddenly, there are no street children around. After a few months, we start getting information that those children are being sexually molested. The matter is taken up with our local chiefs and police men. What to do? We are caught up between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Nobody else is willing to help these children, but unfortunately the one who is willing is not doing it is doing it minus ethical integrity. These, and many others are the social problems Jean Paul Satre was addressing in his play.
Lizzie is a prostitute who is faced with the difficult choice of saving either an innocent negro or a murderous white man. The latter is educated in Harvard and running a successful company which employs over 2000 (two thousand) employees. In return, she is rewarded financially and her indiscretions are pardoned. In simple terms, she is confronted with the choice of either telling the truth or bearing false witness against an innocent degenerate. She makes the honorable choice of protecting the negro. On the contrary, she chooses to defend him and risks death in the hands of her race.
So much to think about. So many lessons to learn in today's society which is too materialistic to care about justice. Fortunately, with these simple stories we are reminded of some of the critical values which we have exchanged in order to preserve a few individuals who deserve to be punished.
