Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. In 1986, PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, COELHO published The Alchemist. During the months of March, April, May and June 2006, Paulo Coelho traveled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella in 1986. In ninety days of pilgrimage the author traveled around the globe and took the famous Transiberrian train that took him to Vladivostok. During this experience Paulo Coelho launched his blog Walking the Path - The Pilgrimage in order to share with his readers his impressions. Since this first blog Paulo Coelho has expanded his presence in the internet with his daily blogs in Wordpress, Myspace & Facebook. I remember I used to date a boy who, knowing my almost legendary loathing of Coelho, bought me this book as a joke. I honestly can't believe this was published. It doesn't even make sense!
Each time he came over I would greet him with a quote from the book and we would meditate over it for a bit.

It was a book full of proverbs, words of encouragement and wisdom, filled with so much realization on life. As you go along reading each page, you would realize that you can relate to what the author is sharing to us, that in each one of us there is a warrior of light, hiding beneath our folds of fear, doubts and loneliness. We are a Warrior of Light, whether we believe in it at first or not, because we are servants of the longingness to find our dreams, to conquer our fears and live life with pure happiness and contentment. A Warrior of Light is not perfect, and more than we could imagine, have more flaws than what eyes can perceive;but a Warrior of Light is not afraid to admit his mistakes and go through about his chosen path with the hope that he will soon find his way to his Personal Legend. He believes that no one can fulfill his destiny but he alone; and that without God, he is nothing but a mere dust on the face of the Earth.
This book is not only a book of inspirational quotations but a book reflecting our own personal endeavors and feelings; it's a mirror of our ownselves, seeing through it that we are capable and we can be strong with always in our minds and hearts the gift of faith, hope and love.
I recommend this books, not only for those who wants to read somethings new, but most especially for who feels discouraged in life, for those who thinks that his life is meaningless and filled with loneliness. Be not afraid to reflect on your life, and discover that you are more than what you think you can be. :)

"A Warrior of Light values a child's eyes because they are able to look at the world without bitterness. When he wants to find out if the person beside him is worthy of his trust, he tries to see him as a child would."
I mean, totally. Little kids are so great a spotting immediately if an adult is trustworthy or not. That is why paedophiles have such an impossible task.

The only good thing about him is he has given the wonderful Margaret Jull Costa some translating work.

I am now reading this book for the third time. With each reading I underline and highlight something newly discovered that connects and validates my current experience and understanding. Why this book is fascinatingly useful to me is, its a compilation of seeds that grow when watered by my personal experience and meditative thought. In and of itself, it does not do the dirty work or heavy lifting for you, as many other books intend to do. This book is not entertaining you. It waits for you to mix your perspective and thought with it, before it shows its true value, potential and colour. Because we change and grow spiritually,mentally and in so many other ways, this book takes on and reveals many new insights and personal validations/confirmations as we change.

This book has been with me through thick and thin and it is quite special because I don't even like it. I re-read it from time to time because a special friend has called me for years "the Warrior of the Light" and addressed quotes from this book as if it would be me. And that makes a book special. But now almost 20 years after the first time this friend did that, I am feeling like I understand more and I am capable to notice more. It's odd, but at the same time gives a fateful feeling.
Otherwise, my review below from the last time I re-read this book stands.

This book was very inspiring to me. It was the right book at the right time. And with being a psychotherapist I have often had very similar thoughts as Paulo Coelho when I work with people, helping them through their pain and suffering. The book is beautifully written and full of symbolism. The Warrior of light served as metaphor for those who serve God and are not perfect, but human striving toward God's light.
Thought I would include some quotes below from Paulo Coelho's book.
"Like the fighter, the Warrior of Light is aware of his or her immense strength, and will never fight with anyone who does not deserve the honor of combat".
"A Warrior of the Light might not understand the Almighty's intentions, but he allows his life to develop according to His creator's plans. He asks to be spared suffering, he asks for joy in the Good Fight, but he never forgets to add, " Thy will be done."
" The Warrior plunges unhesitatingly into the river of passions always flowing through his life."
" A Warrior can distinguish between the transient and enduring."
" Why bother to sword fight when you are so much better than they are?" asks a traveler regarding the Warrior of light sword fighting with his students.
"Because in challenging me, what they really want is to talk to me, and this is my way of keeping the dialogue open," replies the Warrior.

鈥淎s I finish reading the prologue, it strikes me that we spend an incredible amount of time and effort fighting to achieve. We determine what is to be done, and plow through all the divine messages that cross our paths in the name of our objectives. Perhaps it鈥檚 only after we鈥檝e fought for long enough, lost a sufficient amount of blood in our self-imposed battles and come to terms with our permanent scars that we finally give in just enough to actually realize what鈥檚 around us.
鈥淭he pandemonium of modern day madness has become too much for us to control, so we turn to ourselves 鈥� not inward, but simply in the general direction of ourselves 鈥� and begin to prune. We snip away the illogical as we see it, we clip the creativity and shave the originality until we create sterility, all in the name of order. But it鈥檚 those longer branches and fallen leaves that grant us access to a broader perspective 鈥� one that includes passion, and joy, and courage to bet on faith. In this space of acceptance, achievement becomes a natural state, and the belief in the necessity to fight for whatever you believe should be yours is dissolved into the lush backdrop of humility, authenticity and grace.鈥�

The more Coelho tries to be inspirational, the more he lacks.
Ah, I was a huge fan of this book when I read it and I was possibly 13. Now I look back to it, I only can say that it was a book version of being drama queen. There is no drama at all,in the boook. But, the system of thought is the same as drama queens that tries to make all the problems bigger than they actually are and then start to fight with imaginational enemies.
No, Coelho. Not this. Advicing people to be strong in the way of battlefields and wars and conflicts etc. is not the way this should be happened. But it did anyways.
After tasting the popularity of these kind of "drama queenish, fighter assumptionish of self" books, he kept on writing at this level, not even a step further.
I am truely so sad that this book was my favourite when I'm 13, I'm ashamed of myself. More, I'm ashamed of Coelho for being a victim of popular desires. I wish he was a literature person who writes classy books but he wasn't and he will never be.

I know this will state this is my 2nd time reading this book....but I've read it more times than I can count. It just speaks to me in so many ways-and I read snippets of it when I need to.

The Alchemist was great, so naturally I went out and bought 2 more Coelho books. The Valkeries was not very good and gives a lot of insight into Paulo himself (not impressed). Then I started to read Warrior of Light and truly believe that Paulo totally misses the boat on what it means to be a Warrior of Light. Suprisingly for someone who writes metaphysical books, he can't see around his own ego long enough to put anything of value on the page. This did it for me, as far as I am concerned read the Alchemist and move on.

I know that many many people won't like this review, but I have to be honest. From a litterary point of view P.Coelho's writing really simple, nothing special in it, there are not engaging images or words. Since this is not supposed to be a novel but a manual in a more philosophical way (!), this Warrior's of the Light philosophy is really plain. I feel that Coelho just wanted to add everything he could in order to attract more readers. It is mostly a book for people who feel that they don't have any courage to deal with everyday's difficulties (everyone) and with this "warrior manual" he is trying to inspire people so that they can deal with it. This manual is contradictive because the writer is trying to include everything he can, it is really disorganised and does not offer arguments that could convince you. I really struggled in order to finish reading this book, even though it's really easy reading but there was nothing new to read in most of his mini-chapters (1 page!. Really, I just felt that it was for boys who dream of becoming knights or something and want to follow a manual just because they want to follow something instead of finding themselves lost without any life-directions. Since this is a moral manual (in an Aristotelian way, meaning that it suggests a certain way of living) I find it no inspiring at all, really simple, almost childish.
If you want to read something morally inspiring read some of Buddha's writing.

Pada awal pembacaan, juga ketika membaca blurb di belakang buku, saya fikirkan, ia sebuah karya fiksyen yang mempunyai plot, watak, konflik dan peleraian. Tetapi, pemikiran itu tersasar bila saya berada di tengah-tengah pembacaan. Saya agak keliru kerana ia ditulis seperti satu catatan tentang seseorang, pada satu-satu situasi.
Saya mengambil masa bertenang dan cuba menghadam corak penulisan sebegini. Saya juga cuba menaakul peribadi penulis (melalui kata pengantar di dalam buku ini yang ditulis oleh Shaharom TM Sulaiman); yang mana di dalamnya terkandung sedikit kisah hidup penulisnya, Paulo Coelho. Dan, hanya selepas itu, barulah saya mendapat rentak pembacaan buku ini.
Buku ini sebenarnya adalah sebuah buku catatan seseorang yang pernah melalui zaman kegelapan. Zaman yang mana dia tidak dipandang oleh siapa-siapa kerana pandangan dan kata-katanya yang bukan seperti orang lain, termasuklah ibu bapanya sendiri. Malah, kerana perbezaan pandangan dan pemikiran itu, penulis pernah dihantar ke institusi mental dan telah melarikan diri sebanyak tiga kali.
Maka, catatan di dalam buku ini, saya kaitkan dengan kisah hidup penulis sendiri. Setiap pandangan, pemikiran dan perasaannya yang pernah 'tersakiti', dihidupkan melalui penulisan. Saya juga beranggapan, melalui penulisan, penulis akan merasa lebih lega dapat meluahkannya. Melalui penulisan juga, dia memujuk dirinya sendiri. Malah, dia juga (pada anggapan saya), berharap agar dengan penulisan ini, dia dapat membangunkan keyakinan dirinya yang dibunuh mati oleh orang-orang di sekelilingnya yang tidak memahami dirinya.
Dia cuba memotivasikan dirinya dengan kata-kata semangat, pujukan dan menuliskan juga harapan atau tindakannya bila terlibat dengan satu-satu situasi.
Dia tahu dia lemah. Lebih-lebih lagi tanpa sokongan orang lain. Tetapi, dia tidak mahu terus lemah dan dianggap sebagai seorang yang kalah dan sentiasa berada di dalam kegelapan. Maka, dia berjuang melawan segala perasaan dalamannya sendiri. Berlawan juga dengan situasi dan apa yang ada di sekelilingnya agar dia mampu keluar daripada kegelapan, seterusnya mencari cahaya. Dia menjadi, Pahlawan Cahaya!
Bila kita membaca buku ini, kita akan dapati bahawa ia ditulis mengikut situasi. Walaupun kita sudah menamatkan bacaan keseluruhan buku ini, ia masih lagi boleh dibuka dan dibaca dengan memilih muka suratnya secara rawak untuk mendapatkan sesuatu daripada muka surat tersebut. Yang mana ia boleh dikaitkan dengan keadaan kita pada waktu muka surat tersebut diselak. Iaitu mungkin, sewaktu kita rasa 'tersakiti'. Atau, sewaktu cuba mencari kekuatan hati atau ingin meloloskan diri daripada masalah yang menghantui. Kerana itulah ia dikenali sebagai, 'The Warrior of The Light: A Manual'.
Sebuah manual sebagaimana kita dapat sewaktu membeli barang untuk DIY - Do It Yourself. Manual yang memberi panduan untuk kita melakukannya sendiri.
Begitu juga dengan buku ini. Ia memberi panduan kita memujuk diri, membangkitkan kembali semangat hidup ketika rasa tersakiti atau rasa rendah diri.
Ada banyak situasi yang dibangkitkan di dalam buku ini. Di antaranya tentang:
1) Apa yang ingin kita lakukan dengan yang tidak ingin kita lakukan
2) Cermin diri
3) Masa untuk diri sendiri
4) Ketakutan yang perlu diatasi dengan berdepan dengan ketakutan itu sendiri
5) Jangan takut berkongsi ilmu walaupun kita tahu ada dengki. Kedengkian itu perlu kita terima kerana ia sebahagian daripada kehidupan.
6) Bila jatuh, jangan bertangguh untuk segera bangkit. Penangguhan memungkinkan kita lebih susah untuk bangkit.
7) Perkara kecil jika kita tidak ambil kisah, akan menjadi besar di kemudian hari.
8) Kita perlu bertindak mengikut situasi. Bukan menetapkan hanya satu pendirian sedangkan keadaan yang kita hadapi itu berbeza setiap masa.
Ada banyak lagi situasi dan nasihat praktikal yang dimuatkan di dalam catatan Pahlawan Cahaya ini.
Setelah menamatkan bacaan, saya sedar bahawa penulis banyak merujuk kepada kitab-kitab lain dunia termasuklah al-Quran. Ada diselitkan kisah para sahabat Nabi. Malah, saya perasan juga bahawa bila ia mengatakan buku ini sebagai sebuah manual, ia membawa kita kepada kitab al-Quran itu sendiri. Islam sudah ada manualnya sendiri. Apa yang ada di dalam buku Pahlawan Cahaya ini, ada di dalam al-Quran. Saya bagi contoh iaitu pada halaman 144 Pahlawan Cahaya, ada menyatakan tentang bahaya umpatan. Di dalam al-Quran telah lama disebut perihal umpatan itu, malah ayat di dalam al-Quran sendiri menyatakan bahawa mengumpat itu ibarat memakan daging saudaranya sendiri. Betapa ia hina dan sangat mengaibkan. Malah, implikasinya juga sangat teruk.
Selain daripada itu, di halaman 92, Pahlawan Cahaya, ada menyebut tentang 'cermin diri'. Di dalam al-Quran, kita ada perkataan 'muhasabah' yang mana setiap di antara kita perlu ada titik bertenang, merenung ciptaan Tuhan dan kembali kepada Pencipta bila berada di jalan buntu.
Apapun, ia sebuah bacaan yang baik. Membacanya, membawa saya kepada al-Quran untuk saya cari ayat-ayat yang berkaitan.
Bacalah. Semoga dunia ini menjadi lebih baik dengan ilmu dan penghayatan kepada ilmu itu sendiri.

1. Kusangka fiksyen, rupanya catatan nasihat-nasihat atau pesanan-pesanan mendalam tentang kehidupan.
2. Pahlawan cahaya yang dimaksudkan saudara Coelho adalah setiap manusia iaitu kita semua.
3. Semua yang dikongsikan adalah perkara biasa atau pun lumrah hidup yang dihadapi kita sehari-hari.
4. Jika kita manusia, sudah memang sunnatullah untuk menghadapi perkara-perkara yang disebutkan penulis.
5. Penulis memang tampak sangat matang dan kelihatannya seperti sudah melalui pelbagai rintangan hidup sehingga berjaya menulis perkara-perkara sebegini.
6. Setiap catatan haruslah dibaca banyak kali untuk lebih memahami, baca sekali sahaja ternyata tidak cukup. Dahsyat sekali saudara Coelho kerna dia memaksa kita untuk berfikir. (Bacaan Quran kalamullah berserta terjemahan, asbabun nuzul dan huraian asatizah jua wajib diamalkan setiap hari, diadun sekali dengan sirah dan hadis Nabi Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam)
7. Satu pesanan yang agak menjentik saya selain sangat relevan dengan situasi semasa ialah jika hendak mengkritik seseorang, anggaplah orang yang dikritik itu ada dihadapan kita. Sekaligus 鈥渕emaksa鈥� kita mengkritiknya dengan berhati-hati dan cuba untuk tidak menjatuhkan air muka.
8. Sedikit teguran untuk kualiti terjemahan, ada beberapa ayat kedengaran seperti kurang sedap dibaca (tidaklah banyak), salah satu contoh ialah :
鈥淪aya tidak pernah terlibat dalam sesuatu tanpa terlebih dahulu sebelum menganalisisnya鈥� 鈥� m/s 57. Saya tidak tahu Bahasa asal inggeris atau portugisnya tapi kelihatan seperti kurang kena pemilihan kata-kata tersebut.
9. Kesalahan ejaan (typo) juga ada sedikit seperti 鈥渟ambal鈥� 鈥� m/s 150. Semoga akan ada penambahbaikan untuk cetakan seterusnya.
10. Semoga penerbit akan terus cekal berusaha keras untuk menerbitkan lebih banyak lagi karya bermutu kedalam Bahasa melayu. Walaupun ada ciapan di twitter yang mengkritik terjemahan BM yang tak sampai maksud asal penulisnya, janganlah berputus asa dan teruskanlah usaha memperbaiki mutu penterjemahan dan jadikanlah kritikan sebagai batu loncatan untuk jadi lebih baik dari sebelumnya.

An attempt to mimic the art of war. Coehlo shows throughout this book that he believes that his idea of a happy lifestyle is the only way anyone can be happy. Its high headed tone of what balance is and how to approach morality is clumsy and occasionally contradictory. I'm halfway through this book and it is going to take a miracle to change my opinion. This is the fourth Paulo Coehlo book I have read. I am now eating my way through these novels just to clear space on my bookshelf.
One aspect I utterly despise about every one of Coelho's books is that the protagonist is incredible because he or she is never satisfied with what they have. The only real exception to this is Veronika Decides to Die who doesn't start out as a superhero such as Athena in The Witch of Portobello.
On a note of humor this book is more evidence to my theory that books with the outer margin of the pages are manufactured with perforated of worn edges, the book is not going to be worthwhile.
I finished this book as swiftly as possible because I didn't want to waste more than a day on this ambiguous jumble of advices that sold simply because of the name that wrote it.
One aspect I utterly despise about every one of Coelho's books is that the protagonist is incredible because he or she is never satisfied with what they have. The only real exception to this is Veronika Decides to Die who doesn't start out as a superhero such as Athena in The Witch of Portobello.

I鈥檝e read two other books by Paulo and they were ok, just ok, 鈥淭he Alchemist鈥� and 鈥淏y The River Piedra I sat down and Wept鈥�.
He seems to write with a spiritual sense of some Christian mixed with new ageyness that makes a feel good, but I鈥檓 always trying to figure out if it鈥檚 more spiritual or heretical. I鈥檓 not interested enough to investigate further than theorizing and I鈥檓 definitely not going through the material again.
Overall, I鈥檇 give it slightly above average, but only slightly.
