Surveying more than three thousand years of Egyptian civilization, Egypt and the Egyptians offers a comprehensive introduction to this most rich and complex of early societies. From high politics to the concerns of everyday Egyptians, the book explores every aspect of Egyptian culture and society, including religion, language, art, architecture, cities, and mummification. Archaeological and documentary sources are combined to give the reader a unique and expansive view of a remarkable ancient culture. Fully revised and updated, this new edition looks more closely at the role of women in Egypt, delves deeper into the Egyptian Neolithic and Egypt's transition to an agricultural society, and includes many new illustrations. Written for students and the general reader, and including an extensive bibliography, a glossary, a dynastic chronology and suggestions for further reading, this richly illustrated book is an essential resource for anybody wishing to explore the society and civilization of ancient Egypt.

it's a good book for those who wants a general introduction about ancient Egyptian life and civilization however it does lack many important aspects such as some gods as anubis and bestet, also the role of magic in the royal life.

It gives an overview of the ancient Egypt civilization. Touches to many aspects such as state, religion, architecture, art, life of ancient Egyptians. It was a good read before my trip to Egypt. I learned basics of ancient Egypt civilization and thanks to it my tour was more meaningful.

UH OH! My sister and I are going to Egypt, so you'll now find my reading list here. This textbook is the first and best I read.

I have a little bias coming in to reviewing this little book, as I really enjoy the Chicago-based Egyptologist, Emily Teeter. This book, however, does not really do justice to the wealth of information this woman knows (and how she presents it in such a fascinating way, my god! It's fantastic!) If she were to present this in lecture format, I'm sure I would have enjoyed this far beyond what I usually do in reading Egyptology books (I am aways in love with every Egyptology book I read, so there's really no point in a review from me, as they're always going to be the same, save for a few that were written by nutters).

This was a great overview of the Egyptians that got me ready for my big trip. I definitely got a lot more out of the sites by this brief review.

This book has more important details about the egyptian culture than some of the most popular books written about Egypt.

I thoroughly enjoyed the style of this book. The way the chapters were arranged, the chapter summaries, and the collection of footnotes and references at the end of the chapter rather than scattered throughout the text (so distracting). I learned a lot!

A good book for learning the very basic and most important aspects of Ancient Egypt, with straightforward explanations. But beware of some, although few, factual errors!
