Prague-born writer Franz Kafka wrote in German, and his stories, such as " The Metamorphosis " (1916), and posthumously published novels, including The Trial (1925), concern troubled individuals in a nightmarishly impersonal world.

Jewish middle-class family of this major fiction writer of the 20th century spoke German. People consider his unique body of much incomplete writing, mainly published posthumously, among the most influential in European literature.

His stories include "The Metamorphosis" (1912) and " In the Penal Colony " (1914), whereas his posthumous novels include The Trial (1925), The Castle (1926) and Amerika (1927).

Despite first language, Kafka also spoke fluent Czech. Later, Kafka acquired some knowledge of the French language and culture from Flaubert, one of his favorite authors.

Kafka first studied chemistry at the Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague but after two weeks switched to law. This study offered a range of career possibilities, which pleased his father, and required a longer course of study that gave Kafka time to take classes in German studies and art history. At the university, he joined a student club, named Lese- und Redehalle der Deutschen Studenten, which organized literary events, readings, and other activities. In the end of his first year of studies, he met Max Brod, a close friend of his throughout his life, together with the journalist Felix Weltsch, who also studied law. Kafka obtained the degree of doctor of law on 18 June 1906 and performed an obligatory year of unpaid service as law clerk for the civil and criminal courts.

Writing of Kafka attracted little attention before his death. During his lifetime, he published only a few short stories and never finished any of his novels except the very short "The Metamorphosis." Kafka wrote to Max Brod, his friend and literary executor: "Dearest Max, my last request: Everything I leave behind me ... in the way of diaries, manuscripts, letters (my own and others'), sketches, and so on, [is] to be burned unread." Brod told Kafka that he intended not to honor these wishes, but Kafka, so knowing, nevertheless consequently gave these directions specifically to Brod, who, so reasoning, overrode these wishes. Brod in fact oversaw the publication of most of work of Kafka in his possession; these works quickly began to attract attention and high critical regard.

Max Brod encountered significant difficulty in compiling notebooks of Kafka into any chronological order as Kafka started writing in the middle of notebooks, from the last towards the first, et cetera.

Kafka wrote all his published works in German except several letters in Czech to Milena Jesensk谩.

There is often menace and even horror in Kafka's works, but not usually blood and gore, as this has. Nevertheless, in many ways, it is quintessential Kafka, featuring abuse of the law, the mental horror of a helpless and uniformed protagonist, an outsider, a degree of surrealism, and some dry asides.

The Harrowing Harrow

The plot is grim but simple. A traveller to a tropical penal colony is invited to watch their unique method of execution: a complex machine (the Harrow) engraves the words of the offence in an illegible script. The condemned man usually dies about 12 hours later, but as the words are drilled into him, he is supposed to experience a moment of revelation and regret.

The machine is explained in graphic detail by the officer who has devoted years to its upkeep and worships it almost as much as he worships the previous commander who invented it. The officer is despairing that the new commander is not enlightened enough to give full support to the method and fears the commander wants to abolish it.

I expect Orwell had this in mind in 1984: 鈥淚n the old days the heretic walked to the stake still a heretic鈥 But we make the brain perfect before we blow it out.鈥

Although proud of the moment of enlightenment bestowed just before death, the officer's concern is mechanics, not morality. Was it madness that made him so obsessed, or his obsession that drove him to madness?

Does Inaction Make one Morally Culpable for Events?

The traveller is horrified, but is unsure whether or how he should intervene. He is an honoured guest, and from a country that is not the colonial power.

In this short story, there are three times when he considers acting. But he does not. "He knew what was going to happen but he had no right to hinder" because the officer was acting logically according to his own principles.

He does not even say farewell to the commandant. He just sails away. I'm reminded of Le Guin's chilling short story, The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas, which I reviewed HERE.

Sacrifice

In a twist, the one who is sacrificed to the machine is the one who worships it. But even that is futile: the face of the dead officer showed "no sign of the promised deliverance... What all the others had found in the machine, the officer had not found."

Quintessentiallity

The particularly Kafkaesque elements are that the condemned man never knows his crime. It is a trumped up charge of "insubordination and insulting a senior officer", which arises from a pointless job at which success is almost impossible: he fell asleep, so failed to salute the (sleeping) captain's door on the hour, every hour, through the night.

Furthermore, the accused has had no opportunity to defend himself, does not initially know he is due to be executed, or how, and does not speak the language of the officer, traveller or guard. The officer is judge, jury and executioner, something he is proud of - after all, "guilt is always beyond question".

Resurgam

The more surprising and sinister aspect is the fact that the few remaining followers of the previous commander believe that one day he "will rise again" from his grave...

In der Strafkolonie = In the Penal Settlement = In the Penal Colony, Franz Kafka

In the Penal Colony is a short story by Franz Kafka賵 written in German賵 in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919.

The story is set in an unnamed penal colony.

Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence.

As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror.

In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours.

As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification.

The injustice of the procedure and inhumanity of the execution were incontestable

The very last words of In the Penal Colony move across my bewildered eyes, sitting in the Kafkaesque corner of my apartment, I feel numb since words refuse to come to my observant mind, the comatose feeling blinds my consciousness which fails to pick up words from cerebral saucepan. The prophetic fable of Kafka is full of Kafkaesque elements which would provide eerie dizzying delight to his fans. Set in a remote colonial outpost, it shows a state executioner demonstrating a dilapidated, death-dealing machine, which graphically inscribes the prisoner's sentence on his skin, to a bemused visitor.

The familiar world of Kafka engulfs the reader as soon the reader gets immersed in the prose, the man is condemned to exist in harrowing condition, he is supposed to show utmost sincerity to fulfill the senseless jobs such as saluting his senior and in this nonsensical endeavor, he deprives himself of his basic human needs such as sound sleep. We see the usual terrifying but the very real universe of Kafka wherein the life of a man may be doomed to death for a mere threat, such is the mockery of human existence, for his existence is ridiculed to zilch. The torturous causation of crime and punishment is awfully skewed in Kafka鈥檚 world wherein the prisoner doesn鈥檛 know about his punishment neither has any say in his judgment. It represents a chilling, dark world wherein human existence is reduced to nothingness so much so that people are reduced to just subject of horrific and horrendous acts of humanity, these acts take inspiration from the most harrowing and disgusting examples from human civilization such as wars, concentration camps, the game of thrones, religion and lust for power.

The execution machine symbolizes commandments of eternal justice which has to go on no matter what and at whatever price, even if maybe that of humanity, for humanity is for those who involve in silly games, for those who do real deeds, the devil oozes its hellish blessings uninitiated and uninterruptedly. And those who are being sacrificed in this ultimate advent of god should not be given a voice, for they may not be able to distinguish what is good for them from what is just. As justice is a concept conceptualized by those who never accord in the grand procession and more often than not, distract the world through their struggle for fad things such as equality, nature, existence. The world here demands eternal sacrifice which sometimes engulfs those who propagate it. The participants of Kafka鈥檚 world roam through unknown labyrinths in which human existence constantly struggles to come to terms with the absurd vagaries of life.

The labyrinth is perhaps like Dante鈥檚 hell where fire keeps burning the desire to maintain commandments as it should be, sometimes some immature, progressive people upsurge from its inferno to show the world about the injustice they have following without knowing however that doesn鈥檛 mean they will always be succeeded. What Kafka is saying is that a certain measure of decadence seems to be inevitably a part of civilization and that the "modern" ideals of rationality and liberalism tend to give way too easily to considerations of utility and to the whims of the people.

The progressive people shy away from raising their voice against injustice and sometimes get mesmerized by the dutiful but false conviction of those who sacrifice themselves feeling great but inhumane pride in it. These progressive people proclaim that they can neither help nor hinder the eternal procession because "interference is always touchy." They do not like the in-just system, however, their humanity is just a shield for their convenient relativism. So we come across a gruesome, harrowing, and disheartening realization that those so-called progressive and modern people who are manifestations of justice, empathy, and liberalism are not automatically superior to the seemingly regressive system. In fact, it represents a classical dilemma torturing humankind since the dawn of civilization, to find a balance between individual freedom and social obligations. Our history is self-sufficient evidence that many times human beings have to wander from one to other extremes as to feel humane and reformists, but only to realize that the vicious swing has repeated itself time and again and perhaps will follow the same path. And this ghastly acceptance leaves a bad taste to acknowledge that though the world must be humane and just the retrogressive system is perhaps the harsh and bitter truth of humanity.

It was as it had been in life; there was no trace of the promised transfiguration; the thing that all the others had found in the machine, the officer himself had failed to find; his lips were pressed together, his eyes were open, their expression was that of the living man, their look was firm and assure, and the point of the great iron spike had passed through the forehead.

Kafka never fails to impress me. Strange, disturbing and fascinating. A visitor visits a penal colony to witness a demonstration of a strange and bloody punishment/torture method. The "executioner" presents his work with pride and serenity, in contrast with the barbaric procedure. The narrator also seems to be detached by the horror he describes. The usual Kafkaesque nonsensical world is present here as well together with themes of injustice, suppression, liberalism vs authoritarian society. Gory, stifling atmosphere.

In der Strafkolonie = In the Penal Colony = In the Penal Settlement, Franz Kafka

In the Penal Colony is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919.

As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification. ...

The Penal Colony

We ask ourselves a few questions on the second page of this novel. Once the reading finishes and several horizons are offered, we feel more than lost; we break our heads, and the questions only fulminate. What does the author mean? What does this penal colony represent in reality? It is only a question of a machine described as a modern guillotine. The device is doomed to all the praise from an officer who makes a maniacal presentation to the traveler, like a butcher who would expose his way to slaughter his animals. Does this object hide a political, ideological, or judicial plot? What kind of authority is behind the officer's character, who looks like an executioner, is bloodthirsty, loses his mind, and goes through it? And is the traveler God, the conscience, endowed with an equally manic impassibility? And the convict, a maniac-naive, is he the people or just a system? At least, inhumane practices are at the heart of this moving novel.
It is not easy reading, but we come out of there a little disturbed, although there is an absurdity, we say to ourselves, we have not read anything, and geniuses, the world has known them!

While reading this story I felt like something evil was coming at me. Kafka brings to the forefront the inevitability and irrationality of evil. Nothing can be done about it. No one can stop it. No one will save you.

If I had to summarize In the Penal Colony in just three words, they would be: frightening, depressing, and logically illogical. Well, it is four words instead of three, but hope you got the drift.

P.S. Better not read this story if you feel depressed or stressed out.

"He doesn't know the sentence that has been passed on him?" "No," said the officer again, pausing a moment as if to let the explorer elaborate his question, and then said: "there would be no point in telling him. He'll learn it on his body."

Franz Kafka鈥檚 鈥淚n the Penal Colony,鈥 recounts the execution of a prisoner by means of an elaborate and strange machine that inscribes the broken law on the condemned man鈥檚 body. It is telling that there is never any explanation of the law that was broken. In that way, the government cannot be questioned. Instead, the officer in charge of the execution tells the traveler (who stands in for the reader) about the origins of the machine, and attempts to justify its continued use. He further tries to convince the traveler to speak in favor of this punishment. The fervor and belief of the officer are demonstrated in a conclusion that is both satisfying and unsettling.

Happier Kafka, of course, is an oxymoron!

鈥Capital punishment,鈥 wrote , is 鈥the most premeditated of murders, to which no criminal's deed, however calculated it may be, can be compared. Camus, who was staunchly opposed to capital punishment, was also greatly influenced by the works of the great Franz Kafka. The Austrian-Czech writer made a lasting legacy from his works on the tangled web of bureaucracy, the violence of power, and the impenetrability of oppressive law and his short story In the Penal Colony is a prime example of these themes. Written in 1914 and published in 1919, In the Penal Colony is a brutal examination of public punishment used to control a populace, where 鈥guilt is never to be doubted,鈥 the accused is denied a defence and 鈥the injustice of the procedure and inhumanity of the execution were incontestable. At the heart of the story is an 鈥渁pparatus鈥 used deliver a spectacle of capital punishment that looks as if was asked to design a torture device for maximum drama at the cost of efficiency. And our narrator, a traveller to the penal colony, watches without action as the drama of punishment, the distrust of an officer, and the inhumanity of 鈥渏ustice鈥 play out in this horrific yet unforgettable tale.

鈥As a reliable compass for orientating yourself in life nothing is more useful than to accustom yourself to regarding this world as a place of atonement, a sort of penal colony.鈥
鈥

Kafka dives into themes of justice, contrasting the old Commandant's brutal regime and the more 鈥減rogressive鈥 Commandant as a discourse on power dynamics. The officer, who serves as judge, jury, and executioner becomes symbolic of the injustice itself. This three-pronged duty towards death may also remind some readers of the conversations around police brutality and extrajudicial murder by officers in the United States. Kafka鈥檚 penal colony sentences people to death for even minor infractions, without even stating the crime, and there is no appeal allowed, which reminded me of writing in Between the World and Me about the horror where any minor infraction鈥攐r even suspicion of one鈥攃an suddenly be considered 鈥a capital offense, rendered without trial, with the officer as judge and executioner.鈥 Coates asks 鈥is that what we wish civilization to be?鈥 and, as we see world leaders consolidate power, turn blind eyes towards extrajudicial killings, weaponize language to demonize groups of people, and courts failing to hold perpetrators accountable, Kafka鈥檚 bleak society seems more and more what these leaders wish civilization to be. At the expense of all of us.

Which makes the inaction of the traveller all the more unsettling. 鈥He knew what was going to happen but he had no right to hinder,鈥 we are told. He knows intervening could be dangerous to him but not acting registers almost more like condoning than anything else. warned of the 鈥 鈥 where it does not take an evil person to commit mass acts of evil, just complacency, and we can detect this in Kafka鈥檚 story as well. But that is also part of the plan from those in power, to create an atmosphere of obedience. Look at how Kafka describes the prisoner about to be executed:
鈥[T]he condemned man looked so submissively doglike that it seemed as if he might have been allowed to run free on the slopes and would only need to be whistled for when the execution was due to begin.鈥

He is described like a dog (you may recall the conclusion of Kafka鈥檚 The Trial where Joseph K. is said to have died 鈥like a dog鈥), obedient to obdurate authority even against his own well-being. To instill this in a populace is critical for control. Part of the great inhumanity here is that one cannot even speak up against it without losing their life. Rebellion is squashed before it can even take root in the mind, for even a suspicion can get one sent to their death.

The cruelty of the apparatus nudges many of Kafka鈥檚 themes on absurdity as well. It keeps a person alive for at least twelve hours, turning them over, staunching blood, and providing nourishment to ensure the victim lives until the punishment is over. They are not told their crimes but it is assumed they will 鈥decipher鈥 them from their 鈥wounds鈥 like reading a violent set of tea leaves at the moment of life-ending agony. There is an assumption of a near-religious transcendence from the pain and cruelty, yet the face of the dead man at the end shows 鈥no sign of the promised deliverance. This is intensely bleak in a society that does not consider rehabilitation an option.

There is a rather religious set of imagery in the story, however. The religious devotion to their system of justice impresses the traveller, which is alarming. But we also have a rather twisted parallel with Jesus鈥 crucifixion at play. There is the self-sacrifice that occurs switching places with the condemned but also the death at the end comes from a spike that parallels the spear put into Jesus鈥 side while hanging on the cross. Finally we have those who believe the Commandant 鈥will rise again,鈥 which, whew, sounds not great!

鈥There has never been a time in which I have been convinced from within myself that I am alive. You see, I have only such a fugitive awareness of things around me that I always feel they were once real and are now fleeting away. I have a constant longing, my dear sir, to catch a glimpse of things as they may have been before they show themselves to me.鈥

Anxiety oozes through the frightening fable of Kafka鈥檚 In the Penal Colony which, while published in 1919, feels just as eerily relevant today. A quick read (you can actually read the whole thing ) but one that definitely sticks with you.

English:
Torture porn of the kafkaesque variety: A highly renowned explorer visits an island in order to do research on its peculiar legal system which revolves around an elaborate, monstruous execution machine that inscribes the (declared) wrongdoings of the condemned deeper and deeper into his skin until, after hours of torture, he finally dies. The officer who demonstrates the device to the explorer aims to convince him of the advantages and importance of the traditional machine which was designed and built by his old commander - the new commander, on the other hand, seems to be more sketipcal of its value. To underline his point, the officer makes the person who should be executed get out of the machine again and lets himself be strapped onto it - and then things get out of control...

I will not even try to fully decipher all levels of meaning Kafka offers us - at the end of the day, Kafka's riddles can't be solved, which is why he's a genius. But what stands out is of course that all characters remain unnamed, they are untterly defined by their function, and they outsource justice to a machine - a machine that finds everyone guilty, so it also tortures and kills everyone, there is no way out (needless to say, this legal system has de facto nothing to do with legality and justice). Check for a typical topic of this author: Helplessness. All this happens on an island, so there are ways in which the place is isolated. Aaaand: The machine is said to promise a form of deliverance, so there is also a religious theme going on.

Plus, hey: The thing tortures through writing. A non-human entitiy, built by a human, produces text and passes judgement, it inflicts pain by writing on the victim on whom it impresses meaning. It's a well-known fact that Kafka himself suffered when he couldn't write, that he explained that he felt physical pain in such instances. Has your head exploded yet? There's more: Kafka, a lawyer working for an insurance agency (who saw lots of reports on accidents with machines at the workplace), was a student of Robert Heindl, the lawyer and criminologist known for his advocacy of fingerprinting. Heindl also wrote a book called in which he talks about his travels to the penal colonies in the South Sea - there, he saw...you guessed it: An execution machine. Has Kafka read the book? That's a definite maybe.

Another attempt at decoding the text: Does Kafka talk about war? Mind you, this was written in 1914, two months after the start of WW I, so before the rise of industrialized warfare (WW I) and industrialized genocide (WW II). Still, the story can be read as a tale about totalitarianism, rationalization and dehumanisation - literary modernity, these are your hot topics. In this context, it's interesting to look at the characters and their behavior: The explorer is just standing by, he is not trying to stop the events while he himself is safe. The officer is defending the inventor of the torture machine with ideological furor and based on personal allegiance to his former commander. The simple soldier does what he is told to do, although he gets along well with the condemned. And the condemned? He doesn't matter. He's here to die, human material for the machine, and the text we read doesn't treat him any better.

A tricky, vicious, enigmatic, fascinating text - a typical Kafka.

脦n Cei trei muschetari, adultera Milady (fosta so葲ie a lui Athos) a primit pe unul din umeri floarea 卯n cauz膬.

El este at卯t de m卯ndru de inven葲ia sa 卯nc卯t, pentru a-l convinge pe explorator de perfec葲iunea ei, este gata s膬 fac膬 el 卯nsu葯i o demonstra葲ie. Apoi d膬du gre艧 艧i ultimul act; trupul ofi牛erului nu se desprinse din acele lungi, ci r膬mase at卯rnat deasupra gropii, f膬r膬 s膬 cad膬 卯n ea, l膬s卯nd doar s膬 i se scurg膬 s卯ngele鈥.

Asta e, a葯adar, recompensa oric膬rui fanatic al Legii. Din povestirile adunate 卯n volum, prefer 鈥濽n medic de 葲ar膬鈥, 鈥灻巒 fa葲a Legii鈥 葯i, desigur, 鈥濾erdictul鈥.

P. S. 脦n romanul lui Nathaniel Hawthorne Litera stacojie, Hester Prynne 葯i pastorul Dimmesdale poart膬 un alt semn...

I thought I was reading Edgar Allan Poe there for a moment. The torture/execution machine in this short story was worthy of Poe's imagination. What was it's purpose? To torture or to execute? Either one would be most cruel in it's application. But in this case it serves the dual purpose. It also had an Orwellian feel to it. Of course Kafka was sandwiched between these two writers so it's hard to say any influence existed.

I've revived my discarded review today. Because this book speaks a whole LIBRARY to those afflicted - like me - with Asperger's.

And to Christians as well.

If you're even slightly autistic, you value the way things Used to Be Done a lot more than the way they're done NOW.

That's why we don't like this postmodern world much. Similarly it doesn't like US. We are outcasts.

They have WAYS to make us agree with that.

When you're convicted nowadays, you're convicted. Never mind that your judges are a lot more morally odious than you.

They've learned The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.

Never mind, as John Cleese (and Philip Glass) would say, that "a nudge is as good as a wink" in their world, and amicable hypocrisy is, in the end, the name of their game.

So justice, then, becomes a game?

That, and ever more painful means of ensuring the convicted are kept at bay!

Justice, then, is blind to the truth?

Yes - if like Plato, you see the world as it is, sub specie eternitatus!

For our Eternal Judge nudges us, yes -

But He NEVER Winks. (At moral truth).

So now...

He is trampling out the vintage
Where the grapes of wrath are stored....

End Times on the Christian Calendar.

And He saves the Best Vintage for the LAST:

For the Last, at the End, shall be First!

Al茅m disso, as ilustra莽玫es enriquecem a experi锚ncia!

Franz Kafka, you either going to hate him or love him and in this case, i think it's the latter. Even if you have read something in the past and it was not your cup of tea (his style is unique to say the least) i think that you going to like this book.

A few kilometers away from a colony, in the middle of a desert, stands a killing machine. Near it there is a military officer, a soldier, a prisoner that is going to be executed soon ( for something he may have done ) and..... you. Well in the book says it's a traveler but soon you'll see that the one who stands there is you.

The officer narrates the origin of the machine and how it works and you'll realise that both, the machine and the officer, are horrible. Although i've got to say that he believes he's doing something right. ( something that will be proved by his actions )

A short story that will bring out every single feeling you have and will stick with you for a long time

One of my favorite Kafka stories. The nature of punishment and who punishes the punishers is a relevant issue today...one could argue that the relevancy of this issue has only grown as every country tries to deal with issues of terrorism and revolutionary movements.

Kafka is hard enough for me when I read him in my native language, let alone in German. And I'm not talking about the difficulties of reading in a foreign language, no. Although my German is definitely to be improved, this was not the problem. But I think that when you read him in the original the feelings created, that powerful sense of anguish and suffocation is magnified. The rhythm is steadier and the Kafkaesque absurdity more intense, I think.

Anyway, linguistic observations aside, the story in this book is settled in an unnamed colony, where people who have been found guilty for a crime are punished through a torture machine and finally let to die. The narrator is a foreigner, a traveler guided through the colony. The officer responsible for the tour explains the origin, the function and the justification for the machine to the traveler who is initially appalled by the spectacle and the rationalizations. I will say no more but this is the general outline of the story.

This book is short but also very compelling. The writing is flawless, as always, and I felt from the beginning completely overwhelmed by the irrationality and even the insanity of the justice and punitive system as described. I always feel that I do not have the stomach to read Kafka but I always come back for more and this is definitely one of the best books I have ever read.

I had no idea what this was about going into it. I found this short-story for free online and thought "why not?" But goodness. It's about torture, and I was not ready to read about something like that, right now. Plus, the writing is okay. But the story itself is nothing special and I probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't free.
