Osho Insights for a new way of living

Joy: The Happiness That Comes from Within

Rate this book
In Joy , Osho posits that to be joyful is the basic nature of life. Joy is the spiritual dimension of happiness, in which one begins to understand one's intrinsic value and place in the universe. Accepting joy is a decision to "go with the flow," to be grateful to be alive and for all the challenges and opportunities in life, rather than setting conditions or demands for happiness.

The Insight for a New Way of Living series aims to shine light on beliefs and attitudes that prevent individuals from being their true selves. The text is an artful mix of compassion and humor, and readers are encouraged to confront what they would most like to avoid, which in turns provides the key to true insight and power.

Joy is a wondrous investigation into the source and importance of joyfulness in our lives.

Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.

In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".

In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.

In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.

In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[

After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

I’ve always enjoyed every single page of this marvelous book. In the past couple of days I needed some uplifting reading after returning from a trip where I was struck by the legions of pain-racked faces I encountered on city streets.

Here are several Osho quotes linked with comments on what I’ve found true in my own life:

“You are being taught everything, but you are not being taught to be yourself. This is the ugliest form of society possible, because it makes everybody miserable. ---------- Reflecting back on my school years I can hardly believe all the regimentation and forced conformity that continued right through my high school years, as if the teachers and coaches were running a school of pain. How many sadistic pranks, racial slurs and sickening remarks did I witness?

And this destructive nonsense was reinforced by an unending parade of television shows featuring a slew of nasty clowns and mindless buffoons. As a dramatic counter to this experience, at various points in my life, I’ve had the opportunity to live, in turn, in a commune, an ashram and a yoga retreat center. What a difference in attitude. Osho is spot-on with his comment about the general run of society making people miserable.

“Happiness has nothing to do with success. Happiness has nothing to do with ambition, happiness has nothing to do with money, power, and prestige. It is a totally different dimension. Happiness has something to do with your consciousness, not with your character. ---------- The old saying goes: “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and I’d rather be rich. Very true, but it is equally true that many people with lots of money are completely unhappy and habitually glum. I’ve been around a fair number of such and I can assure you nothing pours cold water on the moment more than having to deal with the negative energy of a smellfungus.

“When you are ecstatic, you cannot be reduced to being a slave. Ecstasy is against structure. Ecstasy is rebellious. ---------- When asked “How are you doing? What if you felt truly ecstatic and said, “My life is one unending stream of ecstasy. Then watch as people react to your answer.

"Bliss means you have reached to the very innermost core of your being. It belongs to the ultimate depth of your being where even the ego is no more, where only silence prevails.---------- We have a choice. Do we want to live in a humdrum, hangdog way or do we want to live in joy? A good benchmark for how much authentic depth and true capacity for joy we have in our lives is to see how we handle silence and solitude, particularly long stretches of silence and solitude.

Since I find much of the philosophy of my favorite Greek philosopher, Epicurus, to be in accord with what I’ve read and enjoyed in this book, I would like share part of my commentary on one of Epicurus Principal Doctrines:

The wise man or woman knows there is a type of possession even more valuable than possessing all the fine material goods, and that is possessing the ability to be in the world as a certain kind of artist. Not an artist whose artwork is a painted canvas or a marble sculpture, but instead an artist whose artwork is oneself, to transform our lives in a way that we see beauty wherever we look; we have a sensitivity to the texture of things; we bring an element of creativity and artistry to our being in the world. What we taste, hear, feel, see and smell takes on a richness as we deepen our love of life. And the amazing thing about this type of possession, as Epicurus well knew - it is absolutely free! - free and easy, not difficult to obtain in the least. All we need do is slow down and become more attuned to the present moment. The more measured our pace, the more attentive we become, the more beauty we will experience. Epicurus. did not formulate a separate aesthetic theory of beauty for the simple reason the entire lifestyle he proposes is itself beautiful.

Thanks, Osho for nothing, how do you really think this book is helpful? if only a naive, innocent person falls for that!!

this book deserves negative three thousand for the rating! just nothing but wrong, imaginary pieces of advice! the mentioning of religions especially is so controversial it's my number one reason why I hate this book, not that he only mentions them but he also mistakes them and puts himself the right one! man, are you the angel Osho you are just living somewhere far from reality get some cure for yourself first. If you're a Muslim you definitely are going to have some issues with this book, any religion at this point!

"Just stop seeking, and you have found it—because seeking means an effort of the mind, and nonseeking means a state of relaxation. And happiness is possible only when you are relaxed. A seeker is not relaxed. How can he be relaxed? He cannot afford relaxation. You will be surprised if you look around in the world: you will find people in very poor countries more contented than those in rich ones. Yes, even in Ethiopia where they are dying of starvation, you will find people who are dying but who are not suffering or in anguish."

You are telling me, that by doing nothing I will be happy? well, the truth is doing nothing will just make you more miserable mister, nothing will is put in your hands when all you do is laying or when you are irresponsible, I believe in working for getting what you love but sometimes, of course, you don't get the achievement you've worked so hard for, then you have to be able to be grateful by that and not give by just a failure. Seeking help from other people is different for whatever reason it's for, if you're just sitting there and doing nothing, but think about it, one day that person or people that help you today will be a stranger or be gone, then what are you gonna do? can you even ask for work opportunities or be sure about finding a job?

“You just have to be sitting, doing nothing, waiting—not waiting for Godot, just waiting; not for anything in particular but simply waiting, in a state of awaiting, and it happens.

well life is approximately about 2 seconds just one moment, a blink, and its over :)

"There is no separation. You eat, and trees enter into you through the fruit. Then one day you die, you are buried in the earth, and the trees suck you up and you become fruits. Your children will eat you again. You have been eating your ancestors; the trees have converted them into fruits. You think you are a vegetarian? Don’t be deceived by appearances. We are all cannibals."

prepare to feel uncomfortable with this, so... even vegans are not vegans you say? I hate cannibalism Osho, what is going on inside your head, please...
just what message are you trying to deliver, I'm so done with you and this book ughhh...

"Become more of the heart, less of the head. The head is just a part of you; the heart in the sense I am using the word is your whole being. The heart is your totality. So whenever you are total in anything, you function from feeling. Whenever you are partial in anything, you function from the head."

if not all, I one-hundred-percent don't agree with this, seriously the heart? if only you knew how listening to your heart will mess you up. But let's be clear heart and brain are two, complex, important systems in the human body, it's not clear which one is connected to which, you die if your heart stops, you die if your brain stops, and one neuron stops functioning and you are done. But.... in terms of feeling and making decisions... then ignore the heart and your feelings in every way possible... feelings are not a way to fix problems or make a better life full of joy, your heart tells you to rest and do anything for your happiness even when it's temporary, but the brain's gonna tell you to work hard to something that will have a great result and then you can take long-term rest with no regret with a heart and mind free of worry.

☺︎im not surprised by not liking this book, I mean hello? non-fiction it is. Still, I hate it so much I just do!!!

Osho is never just a good read, its a great experience. It makes you do crazy things that a sane man would consider as sheer madness. I took almost six months to finish this comparatively short read and my life during the time was almost always guided by his philosophy of celebrating beauty and freedom. After all the shit that accumulate in my mind from the mortals, I call it a day and spent the evenings at the beautiful beaches and backwaters of Kerala taking refuge at the words of this crazy old mystic.

description

The trance was not as deep as and some points seemed to be repeating. But what the hell, I loved it. Looking forward to my next Osho read.

Try to look for happiness, and you are certain to miss it.
Joy was suggested to me a year ago. It was life changing, moving. You can look into yourself, question and look deeper into your inner self.

Here I have listed some major take away from this great book, those who have read this book may find this helpful. the entire post can be seen in this blog:

From The Book:
From the Foreword
But when you have consciousness, two alternatives are possible: Either you can become happy or
you can become unhappy. Then it is your choice. Trees are simply happy because they cannot be
unhappy. Their happiness is not their freedom; they have to be happy. They don’t know how to be
unhappy; there is no alternative for them. The birds chirping in the trees are happy not because they
have chosen to be happy—they are simply happy because they don’t know any other way to be. Their happiness is unconscious; it is simply natural.

Whatever you do with happiness is a prayer—your work becomes
worship; your very breathing has an intense splendour to it, a grace.

Happiness happens when you fit with your life, when you fit so harmoniously that whatsoever you
are doing is your joy. Then suddenly you will come to know that meditation follows you. If you love
the work that you are doing, if you love the way you are living, then you are meditative. Then nothing distracts you. When things distract you, that simply shows that you are not really interested in those things.

The teacher goes on telling small children, “Pay attention to me! Be attentive! They are attentive,
but they are attentive to something else. A bird is singing with all its heart outside the school building and the child is attentive to the bird. Nobody can say he is not attentive, nobody can say he is not meditative, nobody can say he is not in deep concentration—he is! In fact, he has completely forgotten the teacher and the arithmetic that the teacher is doing on the board. The child is completely oblivious to all that, he is utterly possessed by the bird and its song. But the teacher says, “Be attentive! What are you doing? Don’t be distracted!
In fact, the teacher is distracting the child! The child is attentive—it is happening naturally.
Listening to the bird, he is happy. The teacher is distracting him, the teacher says, “You are not being attentive the teacher is simply lying! The child was attentive. The bird was more attractive to him, so what can he do? The teacher was not so attractive, the arithmetic had no appeal.

We have been distracted into unnatural preoccupations: money, prestige, power. Listening to the
birds is not going to give you money. Listening to the birds is not going to give you power, prestige.
Watching a butterfly is not going to help you economically, politically, socially. These things are not
profitable—but these things make you happy.
A real human being takes the courage to move with things that make him happy. If he remains poor, he remains poor; he has no complaint about it, he has no grudge. He says: “I have chosen my way—I have chosen the birds and the butterflies and the flowers. I cannot be rich, that’s okay! I am rich because I am happy. But human beings have gone topsy-turvy.

But people become religious only when they are unhappy—then their religion is pseudo. Try to
understand why you are unhappy. Many people come to me and they say they are unhappy and they
want me to give them some meditation. I say, first, the basic thing is to understand why you are
unhappy. If you don’t remove those basic causes of your unhappiness, you can meditate but that is not going to help very much—because the basic causes will remain there.

You don’t have anything to put at the stake; only your unhappiness, your misery. But
people cling even to that.

If you see the point, that you are miserable in a certain pattern of life; then all the old traditions say
you are wrong—I would like to say the pattern is wrong. Try to understand the difference of
emphasis. You are not wrong, just your pattern; the way you have learned to live is wrong. The
motivations that you have learned and accepted as yours are not yours—they don’t onsci your destiny
They go against your grain, they go against your element.

You have to decide for yourself, you have to take your life in your
own hands. Otherwise, life goes on knocking at your door and you are never there—you are always
somewhere else.

Existence goes on searching for you. It knows your name, but you have forgotten that name.

“I did, responded Al. “And your mother told me you were at Disneyland.
Your destiny can find you in only one way, and that is your inner flowering, as existence wanted
you to be. Unless you find your spontaneity, unless you find your element, you cannot be happy. And
if you cannot be happy, you cannot be meditative.

You have to drop all those patterns that have been forced on you, and you have to find your own
inner flame.

WHAT IS HAPPINESS?
Happiness has nothing to do with success, happiness has nothing to do with ambition,
happiness has nothing to do with money, power, prestige. Happiness has something to do
with your consciousness, not with your character.

Osho's writing is like little drops of heaven or something from the beyond. He brings a very radical form of intelligence and thinking to us unlike what you would find from a 'normal' writer. His 'truths' are so true they are sometimes scary but always a breath of fresh air. No intellectual mumbo jumbo, no philosophical tricks, it isn't 'educated' in the academic sense just a refined wisdom that reveals layers of beautiful insight. No wonder he scared a lot of people!!

This book taught me a lot. Importantly, it taught me how to be happy from inside.. how not to depend on things or even others in order to be happy.
Once I finished reading the book, I created this simple book trailer to encourage people to read it... hope it does ;)

No word can define the enormous teachings and truth to this book's message. Osho truly is radical and I love it. He doesnt advocate a specific religion or organization, he doesnt put anything in a box. He wishes everyone to be himself. Joy, as a way of living.

An lạc tại tâm.

Hãy t b chiến thằng và thất bại, hãy tìm lấy niềm an lạc."

Vale a pena!

Bất an.

-----------

Gấp sách. Bằng ấy đã nhiều và làm tôi mệt l.

Bắt đầu đọc lần hai

lần này

rất chậm...

Joy was suggested to me a couple of years ago, I read it then but somehow forgot how strong a message this book carries. I just re-read Joy and I am surprised at how much Osho draws from all sources and is able to bring a new message that captures so much. Happiness, Joy, Bliss are analyzed in the context of today’s society in a powerful but light and very funny way. After reading the book I felt Joy at the possibilities within and many of the feelings became familiar from the first reading; I need to come back to this book more often.
“The average person is one who thinks that he is not. The moment you accept your ordinariness, you become extraordinary.
“Just be yourself. If you are miserable, then be miserable. Nothing wrong is going to happen. You will be saved many troubles. Of course nobody will fall in love with you; okay you will be saved many troubles.
“Only man is capable of boredom, and only man is capable of enlightenment.

I read this in India during a 24 hour scam ordeal when I was feeling anything but happiness and everything felt sinister. I read everything with the perspective of what I was going through and it tainted things a lot. But I like the message. My favorite passage is where he says you should do what you are meant to do. If you had planned to be a painter then opportunity will knock but it will look for you where you would have been had you been a painter. It has no way of knowing you decided to be a banker instead so opportunity will not look for your there. ;p It's a good read.

A book filled with great ideas and wonderful ways to look upon life, destiny, happiness and joy. The only downside: the same idea is repeated too many times for my personal taste, but many would find that appealing as its purpose is to make sure you understand them, their importance and try to apply them in everyday life.

All in all..it will surely worth your time.

You really can't go wrong with these Osho books if you're in the need for a spiritual colonic! This one mostly deals with how to dispel the notion of attaining happiness, and how one should instead focus on finding the joy within (as corny as that may sound, it makes sense in the book). Great stuff.

Yet, another good read. If you understand the difference between pleasure, happiness, and joy, there is no need to read the book. If you do not know what is the opposite of joy, or how pain and pleasure are connected, then, please, read the book.
