Friedrich D眉rrenmatt (1921 鈥 1990) was a Swiss author and dramatist.

D眉rrenmatt was born in the Emmental (canton of Bern), the son of a Protestant pastor. His grandfather Ulrich D眉rrenmatt was a conservative politician. The family moved to Bern in 1935. D眉rrenmatt began to study philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Zurich in 1941, but moved to the University of Bern after one semester. In 1943 he decided to become an author and dramatist and dropped his academic career. In 1945-46, he wrote his first play, "It is written". On October 11 1946 he married actress Lotti Geissler. She died in 1983 and D眉rrenmatt was married again to another actress, Charlotte Kerr, the following year.

He was a proponent of epic theater whose plays reflected the recent experiences of World War II. The politically active author gained fame largely due to his avant-garde dramas, philosophically deep crime novels, and often macabre satire. One of his leading sentences was: "A story is not finished, until it has taken the worst turn". D眉rrenmatt was a member of the Gruppe Olten.

D眉rrenmatt spent most of 1948 working on an epic play, Turmbau, about the building of the Tower of Babel. He never finished it, but fragments of it formed the bases of other plays, short stories, and works of art. The first was Ein Engel kommt nach Babylon (An Angel comes to Babylon).

In the opening scene an angel descends to ancient Babylon with a woman of unique beauty, Kurrubi, who he created just fifteen minutes earlier. They search for the poorest beggar who will be chosen to be her companion. At the same time, King Nebuchadnezzer decides to disguise himself as a lowly beggar to learn about how his subjects feel about him. He meets Akki, the king of beggars. They have a competition to decide which of them is the best beggar. Akki wins easily and the angel decides that the losing beggar, whom he doesn鈥檛 know to be the king, should take Kurrubi. Although Nebuchadnezzer falls in love with her, he rejects her to return to his throne and she is then given to Akki.

The hypnotizing effect of Kurrubi on the men of Babylon combined with the sporadic appearances of the angel eventually creates a state crisis in which threatens the monarchy. Intrigue restores its power as Kurrubi is banished from the city. Nebuchadnezzer鈥檚 most powerful minister sums up the problem of balancing the temporal with the spiritual world:

(A state鈥檚 healthy authority is only possible if earth remains earth and heaven remains heaven, in which the earth presents a reality shaped by politicians and heaven is a quaint theory of theologians about which no one needs to be the wiser. But if heaven becomes a reality, as it does now with the appearance of an angel, then human order breaks down, because in the face of a visible heaven, the state is necessarily seen as a farce. And here we have the result of this cosmic mess: a people who rise up against us.)

Very creative and unique work. If you like original plays this will very much satisfy you. The world the writer created draws you in - and makes you believe that it is an alternative Babylon existing somewhere else. Political, theological critics are very on point.

You can feel that the whole thing is a fragment meant to be the first part of a longer play. It lacks the focus of D眉rrenmatt's best works. It has still moments where it's intelligent and funny, it just doesn't run as deep as his major plays.

In compenso adesso verranno impiccati i poeti.
- Me ne dispiace.

D眉rrenmatt's best, in my opinion. I know his plays are supposed to show the deplorable situation of society and he prefers Brecht's theater to Aristoteles' but I think the consequence of this shouldn't be that the characters of a play are lifeless and void of personality so as to not provoke any kind of feeling, which sadly is something I feel happens sometimes with D眉rrenmatt's characters. Yet this play has three great characters, the passionate and fierce Nebukadnezar, Kurrubi the personified Mercy of God, and the very amusing hobo Akki. All of them are fantastic figures and still manage to represent aspects of the human nature and its struggle with the course of history, without allowing the reader to become indifferent towards them.

Truly enjoyed Romulus the Great: would recommend it to almost anyone. An Angel Comes To Babylon, though, was a bit too easy, too obvious, even if it was a good moral lesson.

Really thought-provoking play, especially Romulus the Great.
