On the upside, I adored seeing a few returning characters. [spoilers removed]

JD was the highlight of the book for me. It's hard not to like him, despite the fact that he was a suspect, when he's so frightened of everything and yet so eager to help. He had quite a big personality beneath the amnesia, and watching that personality unfold would have been nice if he had been focused on more.

I'm disappointed that, so far, the Sidewinder series isn't half as interesting as the one it branched off from, Cut & Run. I love the characters but the plots laid out for them aren't enough to really bring their personalities to light.

Cut & Run (Cut & Run, #1) 5199023
Special Agent Ty Grady is pulled out of undercover work after his case blows up in his face. He's cocky, abrasive, and indisputably the best at what he does. But when he's paired with Special Agent Zane Garrett, it's hate at first sight. Garrett is the perfect image of an agent: serious, sober, and focused, which makes their partnership a classic cliché: total opposites, good cop-bad cop, the odd couple. They both know immediately that their partnership will pose more of an obstacle than the lack of evidence left by the murderer.

Practically before their special assignment starts, the murderer strikes again this time at them. Now on the run, trying to track down a man who has focused on killing his pursuers, Grady and Garrett will have to figure out how to work together before they become two more notches in the murderer's knife.]]>

Positives

I was hooked from page one because that opener was incredible. Right out of the gate, you're there for the scene of the crime, and it only last for about a page or two.

I think the reason why I fell so completely in love with this book was because it was so relaxed about the plot. I hadn’t realized how many romance books I’ve read this year where the plot, the story, details, facts, and bad guys were so crucial that a lot of the time the relationship was either obscured or lost to it. I enjoy books with serious plots, but I hadn't realized how nice it would be to take a break from it. You don’t have to worry about “what Ty and Zane are facing, just “that they are going to be facing it and “how and “when. You don’t have to keep track of an evil government, an evil king or queen, or a deadline. This is an adventure! The elements they are up against, be it a bad guy, the weather, or their own struggles, are a part of the adventure. It's not the real reason behind the story. We're there for Zane and Ty, whatever it is that they are going to do, as long as they are together to do it.

After how much I loved this one, I was already getting upset about when it would end, only to discover that this wasn’t a stand-alone, a trilogy, or quartet, but an entire series! I love how the first book is gray, while the rest are much more colorful with the main colors for the covers being red, gold, or orange. The gray seems to show how this is a beginning for them before things get all colorful and complicated, and the names for all the books are so canny! The final one, Crash & Burn, sounds very grave and daunting, but then you have the third one, Fish & Chips, and I can’t think of that hilarious title without breaking a smile.

The whole thing reminded me of a tv show that you watch for the characters and not so much the story, as each episode is different and enjoyable in its own way. The first book, Cut & Run, would be the pilot episode, establishing how they met and what they do as agents. Then the next episode, Sticks & Stones, would be about them surviving in the wilderness, and then Fish & Chips-there I go smiling again-would be the third episode of the two agents going undercover on a cruise ship (from what I've read of the summaries).

I can already picture myself eating popcorn and watching the opening of the tv show:

Special Agents Zane & Ty:

FBI GUYS

Everything is so gradual, and I love it! I've read plenty of books where the romance is instant, comes to a stand-still, or is non-existent until the very end, and then suddenly there's an unexplained explosion of passion. I'm not a fan of any of those. Here, the relationship's progress is constant and steady.

Very near the beginning I started to wonder, “Oh, this is just a steamy story? No passion or fluff, huh? Ty and Zane were so arrogant, so prideful, and so downright stubborn that I didn’t think I would get any of the lovey-dovey stuff that I live for. I was SO HAPPY to be wrong!! All those sweet moments I thought would never happen between these two: tender gestures, brief kisses, cuddling, sweet words, putting their lives on the line for each other, Romeo and Juliet style declarations! Mix that with their personalities and all that amazing chemistry!

I enjoyed the consistency of specific traits. Sometimes they were a bit heavy-handed, but I think I prefer a little extra frosting to my cake than not enough. Like how often Zane thought of food, went out smoking, and (later in the book) had cravings towards pills and drinks. Meanwhile, Ty loved his old beat-up jacket, hated motorcycles, was always on alert, and had his catchphrase “Shut up.

Zane is a hilarious walking paradox. He can come across as crisp, clean, and stuck-up, but in reality, he's a leather jacket wearing, motorcycle riding, unkempt wildcard who smells like smoke and bad habits.

He’s intelligent, often the one in charge of sifting through files, and the first to volunteer to go to the office and request even more. He’s the “brains of the operation, and yet somehow still makes stupid decisions on a regular basis. Yes, Zane, let's just take a leisurely walk to the office, at night, hardly paying attention to anything but your cigarette, at night, without any backup like Ty had reminded you on multiple occasions, at night, with a killer on the loose, in the middle of the at night.

He's whiny, needy, and clingy, but only when he wants to be. If Ty turns his back, when he turns back around he'll find that Zane wandered off to smoke again and look for clues, in the middle of the night.

I also liked how they kept coming back to Burns’s office. In the beginning, in the end, and once in the middle, after a point in the story where their case (and relationship) had to restart. It's almost like the office is a starting point in a video game, and each time your character dies in the game, you begin again there.

And let me just take this moment to say that I love Director Richard Burns! He's my favorite character-after Ty and Zane, of course. After all, he brought Ty and Zane together, we have him to thank for the entire book, and its sequels, as he brought them together again after the first case.

I also have to wonder if Burns is the only person who is aware of the relationship between Ty and Zane. I’m so suspicious right now. He acted so calm, like a know-it-all, smugly aware that no one else is aware that he is aware of everything. I have to wonder if he was watching the security footage and saw them kiss in the parking garage, and then jumped up from his desk and hollered, “I knew it!

I mean, according to the summary of Fish & Chips, Ty and Zane go undercover as a married couple on a cruise ship. Yeah, I wonder who thought that up and stamped it on the mission file

 Major spoiler! [spoilers removed]

I didn’t expect to see the title, “Cut & Run", being actively woven into the story, but it was used sparingly, during meaningful moments, and used with the context. It made me happy each time I read it! It summed up the story without trying too hard and coming across dramatic, such as “And this was the moment, the moment we had to...cut and run. Instead, it was used as “We can still cut and run, you know. Which is much more natural, but still highlights the title and how it sums up the story.

Negatives

My biggest issue with going into the book was the sudden and constant switches between POVs, especially between the main two characters. Every time there’s a switch, it takes effort to put yourself into a character’s mindset and to see the situation through his/her eyes, so to keep switching was a bit tiresome.

The book suffers from a common case of adjective overkill, especially the aggressively described dialogue. No one could speak without speaking softly, gently, aggressively, flippantly, smartly, sadly, gruffly, etcetera, etcetera. There was always an adjective to back up the word “said.

A lot of actions were also recycled in this book. "He licked his lips" was used so many times you'd think somebody would have eventually given Ty some water. And then there are all the times that Ty snorted, snickered, spat, seethed, and he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the house down!

The special agent stuff was decent, but I feel like it could have been more enthralling. Also a bit more research in respect to how agents work. Not that I know much about agents, but you can tell when certain aspects in a book are-and aren't-backed up with knowledge.

It could have also used a bit of an edge, a writer’s twist on it. Make it more exciting! Have them give chase to the bad guys, don’t let them get away! Don’t go back to the hotel to rest. Call in backup, bring in the reinforcements! Have a whole team of agents split up and go on a hunt in the dead of night! Infiltrate the suspicious building! Let’s hear those bullets go ping, ping off the metal of a car's hood as the agents take shelter behind it! Jump out a window, hide in the hedges, dress yourselves up to look like a couple of waiters at a restaurant because, may I remind you two, you are undercover. Act like it!

For a book about agents, they didn't shoot their guns a lot. Files, we got plenty of those. Now let's see some action!

Unclear at times, which is especially frustrating when you're so captivated by the story, submerged in it, and then you have to re-imagine an entire scene or set. You thought Zane was lying down, but he's actually sitting crossed-legged. You thought that the hotel was several streets away, turns out it's around the corner. You thought Ty was wearing a t-shirt, but it's a button down.

The information people were giving Ty and Zane could also be confusing. Why were they talking to this lady if she's so unbearable? What does she know that can help them, and why is she taking so long to give the information? Doesn't she want to stop the killer in her city? Why haven't the files been sent in yet? What does the college have to do with the case? I'm sure there are answers in the book somewhere, but it wasn't comprehensible enough for me to pick up.

Too many characters. It wasn't too excessive, but out of nowhere would come two characters (the characters here are almost always introduced in pairs). It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't disappear for over a 100 pages, and then show up again with the expectation that you remember their names, personalities, occupations, and purpose in the story. If they're going to be gone long enough for me to forget that they were in the story, I need a mini re-introduction when they show up again.

 Major spoiler! [spoilers removed]

When his boss asks him to accompany him to Italy for a family wedding, Jordan agrees. He’ll get paid handsomely for his trouble.

There’s a catch, though. Several catches.

1. He’s there as bait: Jordan has to pose as his boss’s real boyfriend, who looks a lot like Jordan.

2. Someone in his boss’s mafioso family wants to murder them.

3. That someone is probably Damiano Conte, a cold, ruthless bastard who has no right to be so hot.

Everyone says Damiano is a sociopath with no capacity for real emotion. Jordan believes them. But he can’t seem to stay away, fascinated with the man despite his better judgment.

When the family visit turns into a nightmare of betrayal, kidnapping, and murder, Jordan has to rely on Damiano to keep his sanity. Can he trust a heartless, manipulative sociopath? Can he stop craving him after he returns to his normal life?

Can a man who doesn’t feel fall in love?

This book contains explicit MM content, hurt/comfort, codependency, an emotionally stunted control freak who doesn’t know how to express his affections in a healthy way—and a man who loves him anyway. Book 13 in the Straight Guys series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. ]]>

Aside from Charles and Ángel, both of whom I love, the way ALL the characters co-exist is incredible. So many times other characters in a romance seem like cardboard cut-outs, there to distract the star couple and more or less the reader XD. Not here. Each one has their own fully formed personality, quirks, backgrounds, upsides and downsides. They don't take the spotlight away from Charles or Ángel but still brighten the scene, even if they only get in a single line from the script.

"Your husband and kids need to be your first priority. Shane has his wife, Sakura has her boyfriend, Jade has her..."

"I dare you to call them my roommates," Jade said, her eyes flashing.

"Partners," Charles finished.

Charles and Ángel's team made this book so much fun. Eva, Jade, Sakura, Shawn, I can't decide which one's my favorite.

Even characters who weren't actively present in the book, [spoilers removed], felt as though they were alive through the memories and mentions of them.

Then there was the spice. Man oh MAN can Cordelia write spice.

There's a reason I only read her books from the safety of my personal Kindle. I love her book covers but I will only ever see them on the screen of my phone. XD

The reason for all the water under Charles and Angel's bridge could have had a bigger impact than it did, but I did love how it's the stalker who indirectly forces them to face their issues. They can't get around it, not with a crazy person on the loose.

The biggest reason for the four stars is that I wish there had been a fluffier, kinder ending. I'm a sucker for a And They All Lived Happily Ever After The End and I like to drag out the emotions it provokes for as long as possible. I am the person who will rewind the end of a movie five times until I feel better. I NEED that comfort after all of the suspense and trauma from the big finale.

I definitely believe Charles and Ángel deserved that after all they went through, especially Ángel. :'(

Also, the absolute IRONY here: [spoilers removed]]]>

Trust (Temptation, #3) 35624065 An alternative cover edition can be found here.

TRUST verb: to believe in the reliability, truth, or strength of another.

Up until now, Logan Mitchell has never had much of a reason to trust anyone.
Having struggled with a self-identity crisis throughout college, he’s spent the years since then creating a sophisticated facade to present to the world.
It’s an armor he thought was impenetrable—until he met Tate Morrison.
The gorgeous, headstrong bartender he’d sat across from only months ago has taken a tight hold of his heart, and Logan is discovering that it’s time to let go.
It’s time to let someone inside.

After years of placing his dreams on hold for his family, Tate has finally chosen to do what makes him happy and follow his heart.
The one thing he never would’ve imagined was that it would lead him into the arms of a man—and not just any man—the striking, never-takes-no-for-an-answer Logan Mitchell.
Tate has fallen hard, and as his world is turned on its axis and they move forward together, he finds his life becoming more entwined with the confident, successful lawyer.

Even though neither man expected the other, it’s time to trust in their relationship—but not everything comes so easily…]]>

<![CDATA[Just a Bit Bossy (Straight Guys, #12)]]> 56238428
Nate Parrish loathes his boss from the moment they meet.

Raffaele Ferrara is probably the most insufferable, domineering man in the world. He doesn’t seem to understand that his personal assistant isn’t actually his personal slave. He expects Nate to do his bidding with a single word. He expects that Nate’s whole life will revolve around him. He expects other, entirely unreasonable things, even though they’re both straight and there’s supposed to be a line your boss should never cross. Apparently, as his personal assistant, Nate has to assist him personally.

Except Nate knows it’s just a game. His boss is straight. He knows Raffaele just wants to make him angry enough to quit. But Nate has always been too stubborn for his own good, and he’s determined to be the best assistant his boss has ever had, no matter how insane—or inappropriate—Raffaele’s orders may become. Before long, the two men are drawn into a twisted game neither wants to lose.

Nate knows it has to stop. He has to leave his job. It’s not good for his sanity. Except his horrible boss is like a bad addiction he can’t quit. The world feels boring without Raffaele’s intensity, and his focus on Nate might be infuriating but it’s also something Nate’s starting to realize he can’t live without.

Just a Bit Bossy is a hate-to-love steamy MM romance that contains dubcon (the character gives his consent, but there's an obvious power imbalance between a boss and his assistant), lots of snark, a long-suffering sister, two straight men who become obsessed with each other, and a happily ever after. ]]>

Try verb: to make an attempt or effort to do something or in this case…someone.

Sex. Logan Mitchell loves it, and ever since he realized his raw sexual appeal at a young age, he has had no problem using it to his advantage. Men and women alike fall into his bed—after all, Logan is not one to discriminate. He lives by one motto—if something interests you, why not just take a chance and try?

And he wants to try Tate Morrison.

Just coming out of a four-year marriage with an ex-wife from hell, a relationship is the last thing on Tate’s mind. He’s starting fresh and trying to get back on his feet with a new job at an upscale bar in downtown Chicago.

The only problem is, Tate has caught the unwavering and unwelcome attention of Mr. Logan Mitchell a regular at the bar and a man who always gets what he wants.

Night after night Tate fends off the persistent advances of the undeniably charismatic man, but after an explosive moment in the bar, all bets are off as he finds his body stirring with a different desire than his mind.

As arrogance, stubbornness and sexual tension sizzles between the two, it threatens to change the very course of their lives.

Logan doesn’t do relationships. Tate doesn’t do men. But what would happen if they both just gave in and…tried?

Take (Temptation, #2) 35624042 An older cover edition of this ASIN can be found here.

TAKE verb: to reach for and hold in one’s hands or get into one’s possession, power or control.

Logan Mitchell is a man who’s always been more than happy to take what he wants. It’s a philosophy that’s proven lucrative in both his business and personal life, and never was it more apparent than the night he laid eyes on Tate Morrison. After pulling out all the stops and convincing the sexy bartender to give him a try—he’s hooked.
Now, Logan finds himself in a predicament that demands more from him than a smart-ass answer and his innate ability to walk away when things get too deep.
He has a choice to make, and it’ll force him to do something he’s never done before—take a chance.

Tate Morrison knows all about taking a chance. He took the biggest one of his life the night he showed up at Logan’s apartment to explore his unexpected reaction to the man.
Ever since then, he’s thought about little else.
At first he was convinced his attraction was based solely on his body’s curiosity. But the more time he spends with the silver-tongued lawyer, the more Tate realizes that their physical chemistry is only the beginning.
He’s starting to catch a glimpse of what life with Logan would be like, and it’s one full of excitement and satisfaction—a far cry from what he had in the past with his soon to be ex-wife.

Each man will face their fears as they begin to understand the true meaning of give and take. Their feelings for one another will be tested, as will their very beliefs. But now that they’ve found love where they least expected it, will they be brave enough to reach out and take it?]]>

Publisher's warning: This is not a light-hearted story; this is a rather twisted gay-for-you story. It contains some steamy MM scenes, explicit language, and two people so wrapped up in each other that the nature of their relationship goes beyond friendship--and beyond normal.]]>

Here's hoping to a better reading year in 2021!

January and February: I have both months combined because I read too fast to keep track of the dates. When I saw that the new year was going along the same reading vibe as the year before I decided to throw all of my "serious" books to the side and read all the genres that are my guilty pleasure and then BOOM. Read nine books in less than eight weeks. Sometimes I can't believe myself.

So, going off an email recommendation, I took a chance on The Straight Guys series and read them a bunch of them out of order:

Book #11: Just a Bit Wrecked
Book #4: Just a Bit Wrong
Book #3: Just a Bit Unhealthy
Book #1: Just a Bit Twisted
Book #8: Just a Bit Shameless
Book #6: Just a Bit Ruthless
Book #7: Just a Bit Wicked
Book #9: Just a Bit Gay
Book #10: Just a Bit Dirty

Total Books: 9
Favorite Book: Just a Bit Wicked

I really should add in some books I can speak to relatives about now, and as always, some classics and self-improvement books to add to the mix. Currently, I'm trying for Call Down The Hawk (eagerly awaiting the second release even though I have yet to finish the first), The Listening Path, and Empty Out The Negative.

Nothing. Nada. Read a total of zero books in 2020 and if it weren't for 2020 being so 2020 I wouldn't have been able to believe it. Not for a lack of trying! I brought books with my on my move to a new home, tried out new releases, and made the time and set up all the comfy pillows for my reading spot, but life was just too lifey at the moment to really immerse myself in any story.

<![CDATA[The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls]]> 35926246
"It was the dog who found me."

Such is the stark confession launching the harrowing scene that begins The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls as Emilie Autumn, a young musician on the verge of a bright career, attempts suicide by overdosing on the antipsychotics prescribed to treat her bipolar disorder. Upon being discovered, Emilie is revived and immediately incarcerated in a maximum-security psych ward, despite her protestations that she is not crazy, and can provide valid reasons for her actions if someone would only listen.

Treated as a criminal, heavily medicated, and stripped of all freedoms, Emilie is denied communication with the outside world, and falls prey to the unwelcome attentions of Dr. Sharp, head of the hospital's psychiatry department. As Dr. Sharp grows more predatory by the day, Emilie begins a secret diary to document her terrifying experience, and to maintain her sanity in this environment that could surely drive anyone mad. But when Emilie opens her notebook to find a desperate letter from a young woman imprisoned within an insane asylum in Victorian England, and bearing her own name and description, a portal to another world is blasted wide open.

As these letters from the past continue to appear, Emilie escapes further into this mysterious alternate reality where sisterhoods are formed, romance between female inmates blossoms, striped wallpaper writhes with ghosts, and highly intellectual rats speak the Queen's English.

But is it real? Or is Emilie truly as mad as she is constantly told she is?

The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls blurs harsh reality and magical historical fantasy whilst issuing a scathing critique of society's treatment of women and the mental health care industry's treatment of its patients, showing in the process that little has changed throughout the ages.

Welcome to the Asylum. Are you committed?]]>

<![CDATA[Any Way the Wind Blows (Simon Snow, #3)]]> 52190991 Carry On, Simon Snow and his friends realized that everything they thought they understood about the world might be wrong. And in Wayward Son, they wondered whether everything they understood about themselves might be wrong.

In Any Way the Wind Blows, Simon and Baz and Penelope and Agatha have to decide how to move forward.

For Simon, that means deciding whether he still wants to be part of the World of Mages -- and if he doesn't, what does that mean for his relationship with Baz? Meanwhile Baz is bouncing between two family crises and not finding any time to talk to anyone about his newfound vampire knowledge. Penelope would love to help, but she's smuggled an American Normal into London, and now she isn't sure what to do with him. And Agatha? Well, Agatha Wellbelove has had enough.

Any Way the Wind Blows takes the gang back to England, back to Watford, and back to their families for their longest and most emotionally wrenching adventure yet.

This book is a finale. It tells secrets and answers questions and lays ghosts to rest.

Carry On was conceived as a book about Chosen One stories; Any Way the Wind Blows is an ending about endings. About catharsis and closure, and how we choose to move on from the traumas and triumphs that try to define us.]]>

The Last Unicorn 13124003 alternate cover edition of ISBN 0451450523 / 9780451450524

The Last Unicorn is one of the true classics of fantasy, ranking with Tolkien's The Hobbit, Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy, and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Beagle writes a shimmering prose-poetry, the voice of fairy tales and childhood:

The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.

The unicorn discovers that she is the last unicorn in the world, and sets off to find the others. She meets Schmendrick the Magician—whose magic seldom works, and never as he intended—when he rescues her from Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival, where only some of the mythical beasts displayed are illusions. They are joined by Molly Grue, who believes in legends despite her experiences with a Robin Hood wannabe and his unmerry men. Ahead wait King Haggard and his Red Bull, who banished unicorns from the land.

This is a book no fantasy reader should miss; Beagle argues brilliantly the need for magic in our lives and the folly of forgetting to dream. —Nona Vero

The Starless Sea 43565560
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is searching for his door, though he does not know it. He follows a silent siren song, an inexplicable knowledge that he is meant for another place. When he discovers a mysterious book in the stacks of his campus library he begins to read, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, lost cities, and nameless acolytes. Suddenly a turn of the page brings Zachary to a story from his own childhood impossibly written in this book that is older than he is.

A bee, a key, and a sword emblazoned on the book lead Zachary to two people who will change the course of his life: Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired painter, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances. These strangers guide Zachary through masquerade party dances and whispered back room stories to the headquarters of a secret society where doorknobs hang from ribbons, and finally through a door conjured from paint to the place he has always yearned for. Amid twisting tunnels filled with books, gilded ballrooms, and wine-dark shores Zachary falls into an intoxicating world soaked in romance and mystery. But a battle is raging over the fate of this place and though there are those who would willingly sacrifice everything to protect it, there are just as many intent on its destruction. As Zachary, Mirabel, and Dorian venture deeper into the space and its histories and myths, searching for answers and each other, a timeless love story unspools, casting a spell of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a Starless Sea.]]>

Wayward Son (Simon Snow, #2) 44017627
Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after

So why can’t Simon Snow get off the couch?

What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light

That’s how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West.

They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place

With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first. It’s another helping of sour cherry scones with an absolutely decadent amount of butter.

Come on, Simon Snow. Your hero’s journey might be over but your life has just begun.]]>

Jordan Hennessy knows she will not survive if the dreaming fails. So she plunges into a dark underworld in order to find an object that may sustain her.

Carmen Farooq-Lane is afraid of the dreamers -- which is why she's agreed to hunt them down. The closer she gets, though, the more complicated her feelings become. Will the dreamers destroy the world . . . or will the world be destroyed trying to eliminate the dreamers?

Some things should stay buried.

Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he’s ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man.

So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin left the Pinkertons following the death of his partner, hoping to start a new life. But the powerful cult which murdered Glenn has taken root in Widdershins, and only the spells in the book can stop them. Spells the intellectual Whyborne doesn’t believe are real.

As the investigation draws the two men closer, Griffin’s rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne’s iron control. When the cult resurrects an evil sorcerer who commands terrifying monsters, can Whyborne overcome his fear and learn to trust? Will Griffin let go of his past and risk falling in love? Or will Griffin’s secrets cost Whyborne both his heart and his life?]]>

The Crucible 17250
Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing, "Political opposition... is given an inhumane overlay, which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized behavior. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical malevolence."

WIth an introduction by Christopher Bigsby.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Red, White & Royal Blue 45832904 Length: 12 hours 15 minutes

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?]]>

Park is an agent of The Trust, a werewolf oversight organization working to ease escalating tensions with the BSI. But as far as Cooper’s concerned, it’s failing. As they investigate a series of mysterious deaths unlike anything they’ve seen, every bone in Cooper’s body is suspicious of his new partner—even when Park proves himself as competent as he is utterly captivating.

When more people vanish, pressure to solve the case skyrockets. And though he’d resolved to keep things professional, Cooper’s friction with Park soon erupts...into a physical need that can’t be contained or controlled. But with a body count that’s rising by the day, werewolves and humans are in equal danger. If Cooper and Park don’t catch the killer soon, one—or both—of them could be the next to go.]]>

Not cool, Mom.

I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.

Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself.
There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.

Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.
And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.

That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.

Everything is perfect.

That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.

I’m not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I’m not going down at all. As glorious as these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game.

I may not know much about play strategy, but I’ve been the good guy my whole life. I’ve been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he’s underestimating the guy on the right.

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?]]>

The Picture of Dorian Gray 1857397 Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, his dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy, who remains forever unchanged; petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral; while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying, enchanting, obsessing, even corrupting readers for more than a hundred years.

Taking the reader in and out of London drawing rooms, to the heights of aestheticism, and to the depths of decadence, The Picture of Dorian Gray is not only a melodrama about moral corruption. Laced with bon mots and vivid depictions of upper-class refinement, it is also a fascinating look at the milieu of Wilde’s fin-de-siècle world and a manifesto of the creed “Art for Art’s Sake.

The ever-quotable Wilde, who once delighted London with his scintillating plays, scandalized readers with this, his only novel. Upon publication, Dorian was condemned as dangerous, poisonous, stupid, vulgar, and immoral, and Wilde as a “driveling pedant. The novel, in fact, was used against Wilde at his much-publicized trials for “gross indecency, which led to his imprisonment and exile on the European continent. Even so, The Picture of Dorian Gray firmly established Wilde as one of the great voices of the Aesthetic movement, and endures as a classic that is as timeless as its hero.

Pumpkinheads 40864790 In Pumpkinheads author Rainbow Rowell and artist Faith Erin Hicks have teamed up to create this tender and hilarious story about two irresistible teens discovering what it means to leave behind a place―and a person―with no regrets.

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .

What if their last shift was an adventure?]]>

<![CDATA[I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations]]> 40591258
In I Think You’re Wrong (But I’m Listening), two working moms from opposite ends of the political spectrum contend that there is a better way. They believe that we can choose to respect the dignity of every person, choose to recognize that issues are nuanced and can’t be reduced to political talking points, choose to listen in order to understand, choose gentleness and patience.

Sarah from the left and Beth from the right invite those looking for something better than the status quo to pull up a chair and listen to the principles, insights, and practical tools they have learned hosting their fast-growing podcast Pantsuit Politics. As impossible as it might seem, people from opposing political perspectives truly can have calm, grace-filled conversations with one another—by putting relationship before policy and understanding before argument.]]>

The Prince and the Dressmaker 34506912 Paris, at the dawn of the modern age:

Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride―or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia―the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion!

Sebastian’s secret weapon is his brilliant dressmaker, Frances―his best friend and one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect her friend?

Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart.]]>
277 Jen Wang 162672363X Gabi 1 massively disappointed because of how much I was looking forward to it. I might do a full review later, but for now, I'll do a recap.

I was not fond of the main characters, especially the main two. Frances was daring and Sebastian had a big heart, but I only saw bits and pieces of that. Most of the time Frances was a melancholy one-note, and Sebastian was self-centered. I like my characters with flaws, but neither of them learned anything from them.

The only characters I loved were Princesses Juliana and Louise and they're not even critical characters.

I don't mind clichés if they're done well, but I could piece together each section of the story into a clichéd story method. [spoilers removed]

I may not know much about this time period but I don't think it was very accurate, especially with how the people spoke.

I feel like there wasn't enough dresses and designs. I don't want them on every page, but when there is a scene dedicated to fashion, I want fashion galore! Fashion everywhere! Blow me away!

Overall I loved the idea behind the story, but I didn't enjoy the story itself.]]>

Everyone expected the king's daughter would inherit the throne. No one expected me.

It shouldn't even be possible. I'm Nameless, a class of citizens so disrespected, we don't even get names. Heck, dozens of us have been going missing for months and no one seems to care.

But there's no denying the tattoo emblazoned on my arm. I am queen. In a palace where the corridors are more dangerous the streets, though, how could I possibly rule? And what will become of the Nameless if I don't?]]>

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

You would die for these two sweet, soft boys.

But you know they’re going to die anyway.

I’m surprised that when I put the book down and stared at the far wall for several minutes that my phone didn’t start ringing with a call from Death-Cast. I mean, I did finish reading a little after 1 in the morning, and the usual alert calls run between midnight-3am.

Mateo and Rufus won me over from their first chapters. Sweet and timid Mateo, soft-hearted but toughened Rufus, and their day full of loving and touching moments gave me all the fluffy feelings. Their story was actually very light-hearted and free-spirited.

Until the end.

That last sentence will get me every time...

<![CDATA[Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine]]> 39961982 No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

Various Gabi 5 yearly-review
January: What an absolutely thrilling start to the year! I can't remember the last time I read this many books in a single month! I had planned on going for one book per month, but now I know that would just be too quick. I've raised my reading goal from 12 to 36! I'll try to keep 3 a month the minimum.

Books: 4
Best: Scarlet

Between Two Worlds: Lessons From The Other Side

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1)

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2)

After You

February: Aw, c'mon! Reading slump already? Although it seems like everyone's in a bit of a slump this month. Still, the year's only just begun! Some people are still wishing each other a Happy New Year's! What happened to the adrenaline from last month? Let's get that back!

Books: 1
Best: Cress

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3)

March: Now this is the lowest point from last month's reading slump. I knew I would be particularly busy this month, so I'll let it slide. Nevertheless, I plan on getting back the enthusiasm that started off January.

Books: 1
Best: Winter

Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4)

April: There it is! That's it! That's the enthusiasm! It's back and it's doubled! Yes! How I have missed this immense love of reading. This is turning out to be the month with the best and most reads of the year! Funnily enough, this is also the month of World Book Day. So let's celebrate!

Books: 4
Best: (close call) The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles #3.5)

Shatter Me

To Kill a Kingdom

The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue

May: Wow, this month went by FAST. I'm thankful that the need to read is still there and going strong! This was a busy, busy month of firsts: I got my first digital library, had my first buddy read, first read-a-thon, and joined my first team reading challenge! Not only that, but I also broke my personal record for most books read in a month (now at 5) WOO! I got pretty lazy this month though, and I bet I could have read a lot more for my team, so I'm aiming to do way better to earn more points for my team for next month's challenge! Also, let's not stay up till 4am for reading (except on special occasions ;) ), so for next month I'm going to work on a better reading schedule!

Books: (new record!) 5
Best: Cut and Run

Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2)

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer

Cut & Run

A Wrinkle In Time

Sticks & Stones (Cut & Run #2)

June: I swear months did not go by this fast before I was a bookworm. I've also noticed a trend in my reading months: I'll start off procrastinating the first week, then get all excited and zip through books like crazy in week 2 and 3, and then start getting lazy again in week 4. I gotta fix that! Start off strong, finish strong! Goals for July! Also, when I start a book during the month, I'd like to finish it before the month ends. This time I have two unfinished books (although one was a due library book, argh!). And now we're past the halfway point of the year! And I'm past the halfway point of my reading goal too, WOO!

Books: 3
Best: Fish & Chips

Fish & Chips (Cut & Run #3)

Divide & Conquer (Cut & Run #4)

Fake Out

July: Phew! That was a rough month. Still, I got in a few good books, joined a new year-long book challenge, and listened to my first audiobook ever! So not too bad. I'm hoping to get in even more books next month, including more audiobooks and a few classics before summer reading time is over!

Books: 3
Best: Armed & Dangerous

Warrior's Cross

Armed & Dangerous (Cut & Run #5)

The Raven Boys

August: This was the best reading month EVER. Not only was it the month of the Mega Month Challenge, but I topped my record of most books read in a month (now SEVEN). I am now also hooked on The Raven Boys and am eagerly awaiting the new trilogy and tv show, I am terrified of next month's group buddy read (Touch & Geaux) and am stocking up on chocolate to fend off the inevitably resulting emotions, and I also did my fist Reading-Sprint! I only got one book in but it's a start! I don't know how September is possibly going to top all this.

Books: 7 (new record!)
Best Book: Stars & Stripes (close call)

The Dream Thieves

Stars & Stripes (Cut & Run #6)

Blue Lily, Lily Blue

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The Raven King

We Are Okay

Poor Unfortunate Souls: A Tale Of The Sea Witch

September: Okay, so a super busy month doesn't make for a great reading month, but it looks like all the months for the rest of the year are going to be busy, so I gotta get into mega reading mode, stat! Less BRs and challenges and sprints, just reading will do! Plus, next are the holiday months AND my birthday month, so I'm reading what I think will become favorites! No excuses, I'm pulling out the books I've been craving to read all year long!

Books: 2
Best Book: Touch & Geaux (Cut & Run #7)

Touch & Geaux (Cut & Run #7)

The Hating Game

October: Between the fun, festive month being an absolute blast and getting my first job, I didn't get a lot of reading in, but I'm not fretting, because my need to read is going up several levels with the end of the year growing near, and I have plans to do very little but read, read, read in the coming months.

Books: 2
Best Book: Ball & Chain (Cut & Run #8)

Ball & Chain (Cut & Run #8)

Shock & Awe (Sidewinder #1)

November: BEST READING MONTH EVER, and evidentially also my birthday month so that must have granted me good luck because not only were the books AWESOME and I read them with various friends who all agreed but I broke my books-per-month record at 8!!! And 8 happens to be my favorite number so let's just triple that good luck, shall we. Some of them were novellas, so obviously far shorter, but I'm still happy. Then there's the big, double-month challenge for the end of the year, plus all the holiday books to read, so with November being so amazing, I've got a pretty good feeling about December. I'm also amazed that I've read two books this year called The Raven King. Wouldn't think that would be a common title.

Books: 8 (NEW RECORD)
Best Book: (trying to decide was a STRUGGLE) King's Men (All For The Game #3)

The Foxhole Court (All For The Game #1)

The Gentleman's Guide To Getting Lucky

Autoboyography

The Raven King (All For The Game #2)

Cross and Crown (Sidewinder #2)

King's Men (All For The Game #3)

The Boyfriend Game (boyfriendsbybLoved #1)

Opal (The Raven Cycle #4.5)

December: And so wraps up the first year that I jumped back into reading, my first year on ŷ, and the month I finish one of my favorite series ever, Cut & Run. I'd thought I'd feel sadder, but honestly, I cannot wait for the New Year, when I can start reading new books all over again and hit an even higher goal. This year I read 48. 48!!! It's not as impressive as some other higher numbers, but my original goal was 12, and then 36. Next year, I'm going for that perfect 50, and also some more new releases, so I can vote more when the Awards come around again.

Books: 5

My first year on ŷ and it was EPIC!!! I'm so glad I decided to jump back into reading again, I'm only upset I didn't think to do so sooner! Challenges, teams, buddy reads, sprints, readathons, themes, new releases, old favorites...There are so many amazing books and bookworms out there. I have discovered so many new favorite books and authors this year, and I cannot wait to see what next year holds!

My first year on ŷ and I am so excited! I will be updating this review monthly as I go through the year.

Books: 5
Best Book: Crash & Burn (Cut & Run #9)

Love Around The Corner

Crash & Burn (Cut & Run #9)

The Lightning Struck Heart (Tales of Verania #1)

Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen—especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length.

The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart, and a lot of sass.]]>

<![CDATA[Tell Me It's Real (At First Sight, #1)]]> 17194490 Tell Me It's Real

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Paul Auster doesn't. Paul doesn't believe in much at all. He's thirty, slightly overweight, and his best features are his acerbic wit and the color commentary he provides as life passes him by. His closest friends are a two-legged dog named Wheels and a quasibipolar drag queen named Helena Handbasket. He works a dead-end job in a soul-sucking cubicle, and if his grandmother's homophobic parrot insults him one more time, Paul is going to wring its stupid neck.

Enter Vince Taylor.

Vince is everything Paul isn't: Sexy, confident, and dumber than the proverbial box of rocks. And for some reason, Vince pursues Paul relentlessly. Vince must be messing with him, because there is no way Vince could want someone like Paul.

But when Paul hits Vince with his car - in a completely unintentional if-he-died-it'd-only-be-manslaughter kind of way - he's forced to see Vince in a whole new light. The only thing stopping Paul from believing in Vince is himself - and that is one obstacle Paul can't quite seem to overcome. But when tragedy strikes Vince's family, Paul must put aside any notions he has about himself and stand next to the man who thinks he's perfect the way he is.]]>

<![CDATA[Birds by the Shore: Observing the Natural Life of the Atlantic Coast]]> 42482183
For three years, Jennifer Ackerman lived in the small coastal town of Lewes, Delaware, in the sort of blue-water, white-sand landscape that draws summer crowds up and down the eastern seaboard. Birds by the Shore is a book about discovering the natural life at the ocean's the habits of shorebirds and seabirds, the movement of sand and water, the wealth of creatures that survive amid storm and surf. Against this landscape's rhythms, Ackerman revisits her own history--her mother's death, her father's illness and her hopes to have children of her own.

This portrait of life at the ocean's edge will be relished by anyone who has walked a beach at sunset, or watched a hawk hover over a winter marsh, and felt part of the natural world. With a quiet passion and friendly, generous intelligence, it explores the way that landscape shapes our thoughts and perceptions and shows that home ground is often where we feel the deepest response to the planet.]]>

Stepsister takes up where Cinderella's tale ends. We meet Isabelle, the younger of Cinderella's two stepsisters. Ella is considered beautiful; stepsister Isabelle is not. Isabelle is fearless, brave, and strong-willed. She fences better than any boy, and takes her stallion over jumps that grown men fear to attempt. It doesn't matter, though; these qualities are not valued in a girl. Others have determined what is beautiful, and Isabelle does not fit their definition. Isabelle must face down the demons that drove her cruel treatment of Ella, challenge her own fate and maybe even redefine the very notion of beauty . . .

Cinderella is about a girl who was bullied; Stepsister is about the bully. We all root for the victims, we want to see them triumph. But what about the bullies? Is there hope for them? Can a mean girl change? Can she find her own happily ever after?]]>

His sex life has been nonexistent for some time, though. After a particularly bad hookup, he keeps mostly to himself. That leaves chocolate. Luckily, he works surrounded by the most delicious, extravagant produce in Gothenburg. Beside his job at the chocolaterie, his main source of excitement is his online friend, Magnus, whom he stubbornly refuses to meet in person.

A customer turns up at the chocolaterie one day—tall, shy, and charming. He could be just the right man. If Michał can step out of his overly safe shell, there might be not only chocolate, but sex, too. Maybe chocolate-flavored sex. And if he’s lucky, maybe even love.

Warning:
This book contains explicit scenes, adult language, and obscene amounts of chocolate.]]>

My Ántonia 86820
“No romantic novel ever written in America . . . is one half so beautiful as My Ántonia —H. L. Mencken

Widely recognized as Willa Cather’s greatest novel, My Ántonia is a soulful and rich portrait of a pioneer woman’s simple yet heroic life. The spirited daughter of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia must adapt to a hard existence on the desolate prairies of the Midwest. Enduring childhood poverty, teenage seduction, and family tragedy, she eventually becomes a wife and mother on a Nebraska farm. A fictional record of how women helped forge the communities that formed a nation, My Ántonia is also a hauntingly eloquent celebration of the strength, courage, and spirit of America’s early pioneers.]]>

If I'm Being Honest 40087230
In an attempt to win him over, Cameron resolves to “tame herself, much like Katherine in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. First, she’ll have to make amends with those she’s wronged, which leads her to Brendan, the guy she labelled with an unfortunate nickname back in the sixth grade. At first, Brendan isn’t all that receptive to Cameron’s ploy. But slowly, he warms up to her when they connect over the computer game he’s developing. Now if only Andrew would notice

But the closer Cameron gets to Brendan, the more she sees he appreciates her personality—honesty and all—and wonders if she’s compromising who she is for the guy she doesn’t even want.

Murmuration 32592637 Murmuration

In the small mountain town of Amorea, it's stretching toward autumn of 1954. The memories of a world at war are fading in the face of a prosperous future. Doors are left unlocked at night, and neighbors are always there to give each other a helping hand.

The people here know certain things as fact:

Amorea is the best little town there is.

The only good Commie is a dead Commie.

The Women's Club of Amorea runs the town with an immaculately gloved fist.

And bookstore owner Mike Frazier loves that boy down at the diner, Sean Mellgard. Why they haven't gotten their acts together is anybody's guess. It may be the world's longest courtship, but no one can deny the way they look at each other.

Slow and steady wins the race, or so they say.

But something's wrong with Mike. He hears voices in his house late at night. There are shadows crawling along the walls and great clouds of birds overhead that only he can see.
Something's happening in Amorea. And Mike will do whatever he can to keep the man he loves.]]>

The Simple Art of Flying 40490334 Quirky characters, plucky humor, and a heartwarming message come together in this big-hearted debut novel about friendship and the true meaning of family.

Sometimes flying means keeping your feet on the ground

Born in a dismal room in a pet store, Alastair the African grey parrot dreams of escape to bluer skies. He’d like nothing more than to fly away to a palm tree with his beloved sister, Aggie. But when Aggie is purchased by twelve-year-old Fritz, and Alastair is adopted by elderly dance-enthusiast and pie-baker Albertina Plopky, the future looks ready to crash-land.

In-between anxiously plucking his feathers, eating a few books, and finding his own poetic voice, Alastair plots his way to a family reunion. But soon he’s forced to choose between the life he’s always dreamed of and admitting the truth: that sometimes, the bravest adventure is in letting go.]]>
