haymitch, pass me the nepenthe too because damn...

tbosas explained how the grandeur of the games came to be and fifteen years later, sotr explains the early stages of the rebellion. while i see how all the familiar faces could be read as "fan service-y", to me it felt more like a testament to just how long it took to plan the revolution. it wasn't katniss who started it, but the tributes before her that kept trying even in their small ways, to defy the capitol. and speaking of the other tributes, collins has such a knack for creating complex and endearing characters because even though maysilee was deemed the "mean girl" and wyatt the "apathetic oddsmaker", they both grew on me so much that both their ends genuinely hurt. and ampert's too. even though i knew it was coming it gutted me, almost as much as lenore dove's death did. there was so much death in this book, as with any hunger games book, but the only one the reader really had time to grieve was lenore dove's. and grieve it i did even though i was barely attached to her character.

the parallels and easter eggs definitely made this book a lot more fun for me, biased as i am since i've been obsessed with this series since middle school, but even objectively, i do believe this adds to the hunger games world in ways that strengthen its narrative. all in all, a solid read. ]]>

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
"actual rating: 3.5 stars

i am still collecting my thoughts so bear with me this will be messy!!

people have commented that this book felt too fan-service-y because of the many familiar faces we encountered. I disagree. Sure, it was fun to see them, but there's a purpose in their appearances. It showed that they have been planning this revolution for decades now. it showed that Katniss wasn't the one who started the revolution, but it was the tributes before her. a community before her. she was only at the right time at the right moment. as Plutarch said, they needed someone smarter and luckier than Haymitch, and that was Katniss. because of the connection, Sunrise on the Reaping became a necessity for the series. Whether you read it first or after, it'll widen your view of the series

additionally, SOTR is a necessity not only to add the story of the series, but it can also be used as a point of reflection for us in the real world. it parallels what's currently happening and I'll be so disappointed if other readers do not catch on

anw that's it for now. i'll add more if i think of something"

ngl i was confused half the time i was listening to this audiobook BUT i loved both gideon and harrow's distinct characterizations and i loved their dynamic with each other even more. they're both incredibly funny and i found their discomfort in showing each other any type of affection despite caring for each other to be so endearing while also being hilarious.

as for plot and world building,,,, i'm honestly still pretty confused but not confused enough to stop reading so i guess i'll just hope things clear up for me in the next book ]]>

i love this book with my whole heart and i see red and blue everywhere i go now

this is definitely a hit or miss book but it hit me so hard i cried an insane amount near the end and at the end and teared up throughout. purple prose usually doesn't work for me but the authors must've put crack in the letters the characters wrote to each other because i just couldn't get enough of them no matter how abstract they were so if you're into an incredibly slow burn romance and love noticing subtle intricacies then this is where it's at. also the twist at the end was absolutely beautiful and made me want to reread the book as soon as i finished it.
