The fall of communism and the beginning of the 2000s revived interest in World War II.Films like The Fall of Berlin with Boon Ganz and Saving Private Ryan are proof of this. The Second World War was the greatest event in the history of mankind, in terms of the breadth of space it covered and the depth of human strata it encompassed; perhaps only Genghis Khan and the Mongol conquests can be compared to it. For half a century, we listened to the victorious side of history. Beevor, although an Englishman, wrote a book from the perspective of a defeated German. Everything that ordinary German researchers are not allowed to say about the Red Army was said by an Englishman. The critical attitude towards the USSR in Eastern Europe sometimes turns into silent support for Germany, given that the Soviet communists knew how to be very brutal.

This book should be viewed from several angles:
1. Russia's new conflict with NATO
2. Traditional English Russophobia
3. The attitude of the peoples of Eastern Europe towards the Russians as conquerors and not as liberators
4. Germany's desire to remove the burden of responsibility for the outbreak of the war by emphasizing German suffering.

In Beevor's book, some ideas from the last days of World War II appear. Why did the Germans not send their forces to the Eastern Front but launched an offensive in the Ardennes and lost the last forces capable of fighting in it? It would have been better if they had sent units to Hungary or, even better, to Poland. A strong counteroffensive with the forces lost in the Ardennes and sent to the Eastern Front would have crushed the Russians to the ground. The evacuation of the Courland Pocket is also an idea advocated by English strategists. The capture of Budapest from the Russians and a renewed breakthrough to the Carpathians and defense on the Vistula would thus be possible. The Anglo-Americans' holding on to the Rhine as a natural obstacle is likely. This would have prolonged the war by at least a year, which would have forced the Russians and the Americans to revise the Yalta agreement and seek a new political solution with Germany.

Former Montenegrin President Momir Bulatović said in an interview that about 50,000 American soldiers are currently stationed in Germany.I heard on a political show that Germany is occupied by the Americans and that it will be so until 2099.Maybe one day German and French historians will write books in which they will portray the Americans as Russians, as conquerors who have their own political goals.

A special chapter is the rape of women in countries conquered by the Red Army, which is a historical fact that communist historians overlooked because it spoiled the image of the Soviets as liberators. An elderly woman from Eastern Serbia of Romanian origin *(that part of the country was the first to be hit by the Soviets) told me that after the Red Army passed, an epidemic of syphilis broke out, brought by the Russians. As I read descriptions of how Red Army soldiers looted and carried off movable property from occupied German territories, I was immediately reminded of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. We see the same pattern of behavior today. From a historical point of view, it would be interesting to see what would have happened if the Red Army had gathered the strength to reach the Rhine!? In East Prussia, a clash between two cultures that existed side by side was already visible, who knows what a clash with the West Germans who had never seen the Russians would have looked like. ]]>
