In these short scenes, it was refreshing to get the perspective of another character as many of them in this series are so dynamic.

Knowing where the second book left off, this was a good way to reemphasize how complicated Nezha and Rin are. Both individually and their relationship with each other. It really sets the tone and stakes going into the third book.

The Poppy War books create a world in which war, love, and power can never successfully coexist.

I am shaking to pick up the last book. This is gonna hurt. ]]>

A fantastic continuation of the first book! Everything from lore to world building and character development is expanded here.

We get to see more of Nikan and its divided politics through a civil war. This development adds to the themes of political strategy, greed, corruption, and power. The magic system is also expanded in such cool ways. Seeing more of the elements used and getting more lore was a strong point in this book. I also found myself gaining more understanding of how the story connects to the real history it is based on which only strengthened my immersion.

The characters and their progression are another large component. Everyone is so complex in their motivations and flaws that it pushes the story beyond simplistic ideas of morality. Rin becomes so layered as she deals with grief, ego, vengeance, power, insecurity, etc. It is so polarizing to see her posses so much power but still be used as a pawn by so many. I really appreciated how various relationships were developed. Several other characters are very intricate explored well too. It was incredible how many conflicting emotions I felt.

At first, the momentum felt slow compared to the first book. But it all became important as the story progressed. I could not believe how layered this story became. How everything culminated in the climax through betrayals, shifts in power, and reveals had me devastated.

Such an epic fantasy series so far. ]]>
