i usually start off my reviews with a quote i liked from the book but i didn't like any soo... no quote i guess. throughout this review, i will, however, share quotes that made me want to throw my kobo on the floor and stomp on it until it breaks with a satisfying 'crack' ☺️ let's start the rant.

firstly, i was soo excited to read this book because of THE COVER. isn't it the cutest thing ever?? the cover reminded me of the vibes from better than the movies by lynn painter, my favourite ya romance book ever which is why this book has been sitting on my tbr for the longest time! 💕 but of course, it eluded me (i got catfished by a cover i'm being so fr right now) 😭

the writing
let's talk about the dialogue: what the hell was that, honestly. i cringed every single time words came out of riley's mouth like PLEASE STOP 😭 she's supposed to be a high schooler but she sounds like a kindergartener. let me share some quotes so you get a rough idea about what i mean.

"This is so unfair!"

"I grit my teeth in annoyance. “But if I don’t do something now, there won’t be a musical!"

"Mom, the school wants to get rid of our spring musical!"

"I’m going to homecoming!"

i could go on and on but i think you get what i mean 😒

now you might be thinking: 'okay lea, well, at least it's only the dialogue that's bad!' and my response would be: no. the descriptions, character interactions and thoughts were equally bad, if not worse. time for more quotes!

"There’s a simultaneous gasp from the students that could only be pulled off by well-trained singers with strong lungs."

" “Looks like you’re plotting, Riley, Paul says as he studies me. “I want to help, but my community theater director asked me to run acting workshops this fall, so I’m obviously swamped."

again, i can continue but there's still a lot more to touch on and i want to spend as little time on this review as possible.

the characters
riley
hate is a strong word, and it is also used to describe my feelings for this character (i don't even want to say her name again) intitially, i thought she would be similar to liz from better than the movies but honestly, she's like a wish version of liz, it's that bad guys. she thinks everything is about her and she is so annoying, entitled, self-absorbed, cringe, etc. additionally, she LOVES to act as the victim and blame others. let's read some quotes together! 🥰

"I roll my eyes at his new presence in my life. Why is he at the store when he’s not scheduled to work today?"

"I bristle. “You’re working right now, aren’t you? If you’re desperate for more money, take it up with my dad."

"“First off, why are you watching me? Second, the only real punishment here is working with you."

"I grit my teeth in annoyance. “But if I don’t do something now, there won’t be a musical!"

"Which I know is totally hypocritical because it’s not like I’m a big fan of gaming either, but does she have no idea that my father owns this store?"

"Guilt cuts through me, followed immediately by defiance. Am I not allowed to be close to Mom?"

"Don’t they know my father is in here? Everyone should stop and take a moment to think of him."

"They figured it out somehow!"

UGHHH I HATE HER SO MUCHHH she acts like she's the only one that can do things IT'S SO FRUSTRATING ok i need to calm down.

nathan
the only good character 🙏🏼 if there was no nathan, this book would get a 1 star, easily. i wish he never liked riley at all, he deserves so much better. i enjoyed the parts when he used to roast her sm but unfortunately that part didn't last ☹️

"“Believe me, I was trying to ignore you, but your clothes are so loud you might as well be walking around with a bullhorn to announce your presence."

"“Your dad was about two seconds away from securing a church for our wedding."
"Nathan shifts a little closer. “Maybe we should…I mean…What if we stopped turning it on and off? What if we just faked it all the time?"

"He lets go of my hand but leans against the locker next to mine, looking so calm and gorgeous that I want to throw myself at him and kiss him until he forgets Sophia’s name."

love nathan sm <33

ok i don't want to continue this anm it's been torture, at least ending on a high with nathan xx

"I am no longer the greatest tennis player in the world.
For the first time in my life, I can be…something else."

after this book, tjr is officially my favourite author. her writing is phenomenal, i've never read someone who can write the exact way we all have felt as humans with such elegance and in a lyrical way, as if snatching the thoughts out of our heads and laying them perfectly out on a crisp piece of paper. and then when we read her work, we respond with utter awe at how well she can phrase out all the feelings so precisely such that we can resonate with her characters with ease. the way she writes is almost poetic. i am truly stunned and have so much respect for her writing style, it's something of hers that i admire so much.

moving on to the premise of the book: for context, i removed all the books that were in my favourites shelf ('lock-up-in-a-safe-in-my-heart' shelf ) because they are all incomparable, in my eyes, to this beauty of a book. going into this book, i already had extremely high expectations due to my wonderful experience with daisy jones and the six and it still was able to exceed them. when i first started this book, i was slightly apprehensive because i'm a music girlie and definitely not into tennis, so i thought that maybe that's why i enjoyed daisy jones and the six so much. however, as you can see from my rating, it had nothing to do with that and everything to do with tjr's writing. i also love how tjr subtly puts in ideas about feminism that is so empowering as a young woman in this world, i love you so much for that, thank you.

as i've mentioned before in my bio, i don't really read historical fiction that often because i usually end up crying A LOT and guess what? i think i cried a record-breaking number of times while reading this because carrie soto is just so relatable to me. as a female only child with parents who are always there to remind me that winning isn't everything (regarding my academics), it felt as if carrie soto was a version of me in an alternate universe. just like me, her father, javier soto, always reminded her that winning isn't everything but rather the joy of doing what you love that is important. i think for the both of us (not me speaking as if carrie soto is real LOL) as female only children, we know that when we have children they will not carry our family name and so we have to find other ways to make sure that our family name will not be forgotten. and one of the ways is winning. this is why i think we are both so driven in life to succeed and sometimes that pressure to do well makes us completely forget the reason for putting pressure on ourselves in the first place. after reading this book, i was in the shower thinking about carrie soto as a character and i just started full-on sobbing because i felt so seen through her character. i know that she wasn't written to be a likable character but i just can't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with her. the way her character was written made her feel so raw and real, and that was what got me so emotional. certain aspects of her are the total opposite from me, such as her directness, confidence (the things i'd do to have her confidence) and her sheer discipline and determination to succeed, which i was very motivated and inspired to strive to be like after reading this. it might sound pretty narcissistic but because of the way tjr made carrie such a relatable character, it felt almost as if she were writing about me and plucking all of my feelings and bottled-up stress to put down onto paper, it's truly beautiful how she's able to do this (i'm running out of synonyms for 'amazing') [spoilers removed] and then of course, i started crying... again 😭😭 carrie is also such a guarded and pessimistic individual, which was another characteristic i could relate to so much as i always think of the worst possible scenarios.

carrie quotes!
As Paulina walked by, she barely looked at me. “Izvinite menya, I did not see you there. You are so short.
I gave a tight smile and then turned to my father. “I want to beat her to the ground.

I congratulate Nicki Chan on her accomplishments in women’s tennis.
But her domination is over.
I’m back.

Bowe shakes my hand. “May the best player win, he says.
“Don’t worry, I will.

I turn away and look out the window, overcome with this awful, sinking feeling. As happy as you are when it starts, you always end up that same amount of sad when it’s over.

I watch him throw his head back on the bed. And I let myself believe for a moment that maybe he means it. Maybe this time, maybe this man, means it.

“I see a change in you that I can’t quite describe, since Wimbledon.
۴dz’r…f.
“I’m less afraid, I say. “Of losing.
“Because you’ve made your peace with it? he asks.
“Because it’s unlikely.

A tear leaves my eye. I wipe it away. Poor Dvořáková. She stands no chance. It’s over in fifty-one minutes.

moving on to the other characters now!! i loved all of the side characters, especially javier soto and bowe huntley (my boyfriend🤭) let's talk about javier soto aka papa soto first!! i think it's pretty rare nowadays to find healthy father-daughter relationships portrayed in books and i found it so refreshing. for most books nowadays, it's either the father is a drunk or abusive (or both!) let's all agree that everyone loves javier soto ([spoilers removed]) and he was such a sweetheart, always by his daughter's side, even when she was outright rude to him, he had her back at all times, no matter what happened. he was her rock and an amazing coach, and a really funny guy too! definitely a character that i'll never forget, i love him so much he's so precious. [spoilers removed]

javier soto quotes!
My mother rolled her eyes at him as she began to put dinner on the table. “I would rather she was kind and happy.
“Alicia, my father said as he stood behind my mother and wrapped his arms around her. “No one ever tells stories about that.

“I know you did. Sometimes, you’re much smarter than me. So much stronger too. You’re like a bright diamond, one shiny, tough…
“Bitch, I offer.
My dad laughs. “Okay, sure. One shiny, tough bitch.

“No, he says. “Just accept it. Let me feel it and say it. You’re the meaning of my life.

moving on to bowe huntley, can we all take a moment to appreciate him please? he's a literally walking talking neon green flag!! I LOVE HIM OH MY GOD. yes, he has his temper, but he literally worked on it just so he could prove himself worthy to the sotos, he wanted to get better for carrie and that is just the sweetest thing ever. [spoilers removed] bowe really stepped up to the plate, [spoilers removed] he was always there for carrie as well, just like javier and i think that's why i love him so much.

bowe quotes!

“And he knows you’re a better player than he is, my dad says. “I was always worried about that with you. Because the only person who could ever understand you would be another player. But how many players would be okay knowing they were second place? He takes to it well, though. Which is about the highest compliment I can think of. I’m not sure there is a greater strength.

Bowe grabs my waist and spins me toward him.
And I wonder for a moment why I have spent all my time worried about losing things, when there is so much here.

So far this morning, as well as asking Gwen to get the smoothie, he’s woken me up, called down for almonds, run the shower, put me in it, and then when I just stood there, he got in with me and washed my hair.

“I fucked up. I forgot socks, he says. “When I was packing your things.

conclusion: a great book with even greater characters, all thanks to a phenomenal author, my favourite book of all time 100%.
