Tell me I don't know you, Sam thought. Tell me I don't know you when I could draw both sides of this hand, your hand, from memory.

First book of 2025, off to a great start! This book reminds me so much of the song from Spirited Away, 'Itsumo Nando Demo'. The song is about how two friends, no matter how far they are from each other, will always be in one another's hearts. To me, Sadie and Sam's relationship is exactly like this. Even through difficulties and fights, their love is constant. Maybe Sadie and Sam were meant to be lovers, perhaps it wasn't the right time. But then again, how will we ever know when the time is right?

I loved this book and the way Gabrielle Zevin made the characters so lifelike... I was in absolute awe. One thing I can say for sure, Gabrielle Zevin is a breathtaking author who can (and will) make you sob. When (view spoiler), I sobbed uncontrollably and it amazed me how she was able to do that without outrightly saying that (view spoiler). I especially loved how she was able to slowly peel the layers away from each character, allowing the reader to connect with each of the characters, and when troubles arose for them, you could feel it punch you in the gut as if you were standing in their shoes.

For me, I felt that the emphasis on (view spoiler) was unnecessary, though I do understand the need for it to show the (view spoiler) Other than that, I found it excessive although it was not described in detail.

All in all, highly recommend this book, go and read it if you haven't done so!

Gabrielle Zevin
“Sam looked at her outstretched hand, which he knew as well as any hand except his own---the precise pattern of the lines that made up the grid of her palm, the slim fingers with the purplish veins at the knuckles, the particular creamy olive hue of her skin, her delicate wrist, pinkish, with a penumbral callus that must have come from Dov, the white gold bracelet she wore that he knew had been a gift from Freda on her twelfth birthday. How could she honestly think he wouldn't know about the handcuffs? He had spent hours sitting next to her, playing games and then making them, staring at her hands as her fingers flew across a keyboard or jabbed at a controller. Tell me I don't know you, Sam thought. Tell me I don't know you when I could draw both sides of this hand, your hand, from memory.”
