This story takes place in a land called Saylok, named after a son of Odin. We know that in actual Norse mythology, no such son exists, but Harmon does an incredible job weaving her world amongst the established lore, so it felt like it belonged. The First Girl Child is a commentary on the misogynistic injustices of social society whilst also being a well thought out and enjoyable fantasy with both adventure and intrigue. The feminism laced within the world-building was done really well, and there wasn't too much info-dumping or a prolonged character introductions. Everything flowed well even if at times the pacing slowed in places which is why it didn't quite reach top marks for me but this story spans over twenty years starting from when Dagmars sister Desdemona places a curse upon Saylok in her final moments after giving birth to Bayr which marks the activation of the curse. The relationships between Dagmar & Bayr, Ghost & Dagmar , Bayr & Alba were heartfelt and filled with sacrifice, redemption, grief, and love and were beautiful in their complexity. The romance aspect of this story is most definitely a subplot, and any intimate moments are alluded to not shown, but I didn't feel like the story missed out from that being the case. Overall, I found this to be an engaging and entertaining read and was a great introduction to this new to me author.

"Women don't make great warriors," Ivo spat. Dagmar didn't respond. He didn't agree. A mother was the fiercest warrior of all.

"In the beginning, they’d rejoiced. Sons were always preferable. Sons were the lifeblood. The protectors. The warriors. The farmers. How foolish they’d all been."

"Be careful what you fear," Ivo replied, grave. "We draw the attention of the fates when our fear grows too loud. The fates are cruel, and they will reward you with what you fear most." ]]>

Toby is a paranormal MM romance author in the midst of writing his newest book and when asking questions such as "can someone die from having their fingers severed" he doesn't expect his hot next-door neighbour Dexter to actually answer... so now Toby is concerned he lives next door to a serial killer.. but Dex is only a Hellhound who can hear really well, smell rotting human souls that are bound for hell (and Toby when he is horny but thats neither here nor there), is super strong, fast and is shirtless a lot thanks to needing to burn his clothes with his hellfire after deleting said hell bound souls from earth. It's definitely not something Toby needs to worry about. When Toby is targeted by a stalker Dexters protective instincts kick in, and the story goes from there.

This was such a great, doesn't take itself too seriously read. It's very insta lust/love, but with it being paranormal and the mates trope being utilised, it worked. This is a quirky urban paranormal romance with good humour, interesting characters, easy world building, and low angst with a sprinkling of good spice, too. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Alexander Cendese & Iggy Toma and I adore these two together. They each fit their character well, and their delivery on the humour had me chuckling. This was my first book by this author, and if you go into this not taking it too seriously, you will have a blast. I had a really fun time with it and will definitely be continuing this series. 🌶🌶

"I think my neighbour is a serial killer," I whispered, peeking out from behind the drapes to the house next door. "Toby, are you writing dark romances again?" Josh sighed.
"And," I added, ignoring his long-suffering tone,
"I think his eyes glowed red the other night.
"So it's paranormal dark romances, then," he
grumbled."

"Yesterday, Toby had been asking his PA how many fingers a person could lose before they bled to death. I put on safety glasses, picked up the handheld saw, and went to work to find out the answer to his question."

"I would not allow the dream vision I'd had the
other day to become a reality. Toby would not be kidnapped by some psycho stalker. I was the only psycho stalker he needed in his life. I realized that was a bit unhinged, but oh well.
He had the protection of a hellhound, whether he wanted it or not."

"Ok, so I had a stalker. That sucked. But I also had Sexy Neighbour looking out for me and kissing me. So that was a plus."

"Somehow, my sweet, cute neighbour had become more important to me than I thought possible, and I didn't know what I would do if something happened to him. I pitied any fool who tried to harm him. I would burn them and everything they held dear down to protect my Toby."

"The last thing I wanted was Sexy Neighbour to get eaten by the local werewolf (unless he was the local werewolf, in which case-lucky me)" ]]>

Book 4 in the Sparrow Falls series gives us Arden & Lincs story. Arden is the reclusive artist sister and Linc is Copes best friend and boss who we met in the previous book. Overall, this was an entertaining listen, and as always, I thoroughly enjoyed the narration by Samantha Brentmoor & Sebastian York. However I called who was behind everything from VERY early on into the book so the suspense element of it fell flat for me but I enjoyed the romance between Arden & Linc and getting to see the Colson clan again. I liked Ardens strength and feisty attitude and how Linc was able to draw out her more vulnerable side, the found family aspect wasn't as strong in this as it has been in previous books but we got glimpses of it. The ending/third act conflict felt rushed, and personally, I think it would have felt better spread out a bit more. Overall, this was a good addition to the series, and im looking forward to the next book in this series dropping later this year. 🌶🌶

"It was beautiful, my little spot in the world. But it sometimes felt like a beautiful exile - the one place in the world where I was truly safe. But that safety could lock you in a place."

"I don't want any of them to show me around. I want to hear about the art from the woman who creates pieces that grab me by the throat and refuse to let go. Who creates work that haunts you long after you've looked away. Art that makes you confront the dark places inside."

"And what is this one's truth?"Sometimes, you need to bleed to bloom." ]]>
