no real answer. i don't get block. i usually map out a work with signposts. when i sit down to write i know where i'm starting and where i'm going, but don't have a clue how i'm going to get there. the stuff just flows out of my head, through my fountain pen and onto the paper; which is why editing is so important. i just GO. oh, yes, i use a fountain pen. i'm a terrible typist; good enough only for editing. and the fountain pen is easy on the hands.
sometimes i don't like where the story is going, so i may stop for a week or a month and then, when i've rerouted, i start my engines.

well, i'd like to talk about the WORST thing. writing, and maybe particularly the novel which is my favorite form of expression, is the lonliest art form. let's say you paint. a friend drops by an comments on one of your watercolors. you pour them (plural pronoun now acceptable; i've always preferred it) a glass ofwine and spend 20 minutes showing them your oeuvre.what do you when you tell them you write--novels. hand them 400 pages of text. boy, they can't wait to dive into that pile of paper!

also, it's a brutal business. lots of nice people in the litererary world but few offer help when you'd like to actually publish or market a new work. remember you'll have to do it yourself. especially marketing. fortunately, self-publishing no longer has the stigma of Vanity Publishing.

nothing active, since Wanda and the Winged Sea Serpent. i've been spending a lot of time on launching the first book in The Ur Legend Series, Sun Valley Moon Mountains. but i have a couple of ideas: a story or play about the Constitution and an alternative history of U S Grant's attmept to annex the Dominican Republic.

usually an event will trigger the urge. recently, our golf club (my wife Linda is a good golfer while i'm a hack) changed its logo from pinecones to a Sea Serpent. i got an idea for a short story, Wanda and the Winged Sea Serpent, to 'explain' how this happened. as is usual for me, the story is a fantasy.
the actual process for me is quite methodical. i usually write on weekends for an hour or two. no getting up in the middle of the night in a lather. i enjoy editing as much as the creative part of writing. i'll edit any old time.

it's explained in the Foreword to Sun Valley Moon Mountains. short answer is that the death of our daughter, Kathereine, inspired me to write a short story that quickly became a long novel, which slowly became a series of three novels.
