I'm such a slow reader! My current reading goal is a collection of 5 PG Wodehouse books, simply called "5 Complete Novels." He has such a genius for humor and making you laugh, whether you want to or not. I find him completely wonderful and totally recommend his books, particularly those involving Jeeves, the manservant.

Spend about twice as much time observing and listening as you do speaking. Not that I follow my own advice! But it makes for a rich bed of experience and character behaviors that you can draw on when you get ready to design your characters. Most authors feel that it's the characters that create the stories, so they are very important. I agree!

I think the best thing is that you are not limited in where you go, at least in your mind. You can journey through time, other countries, other cultures, and there's no limits on what can happen while you're there. Of course, it's sad when the story comes to an end and you have to say goodbye to the "friends" you've made along the way. I think that might be why so many of us like to create series--you can hang onto the characters you've created.

I'm outlining the second book in the Serve Series, which pretty much picks up where The Call to Serve leaves off, which is the end of 1943. It's exciting!

The "Serve Series" is actually imaginings about my parents' generation. These books take place in the 1940s during the Second World War, so I have a lot of history to play with in there--although I am true to the military timeline of the war.
