Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?
Anne Sebba I love the interaction between the two couples in Wallace Stegner's masterpiece Crossing to Safety... Larry and Sally Morgan and Charity and Sid Lang. All have difficulties and weaknesses and vulnerabilities which they occasionally play off against each other. Just a brilliant and deeply emphatic understanding of character.

Just fyi: I think the description of your giveaway book LES PARISIENNES is actually a description of the Wallace Simpson book? (I like les Parisiennes, btw, but am utterly fascinated by Simpson.)

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Anne Sebba Everything! You get to learn about things that interest you and try to make sense of them for anyone who might read your work.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Anne Sebba I have always been fascinated by French history which was my special subject at University a long time ago! I realised that in spite of all the books about wartime France and Vichy no one had pulled together all the stories about Women... good and bad and several in between and I wanted to catch as many women as I could before that whole generation died to hear their stories. I feel deeply privileged to have met as many women as I have for this book.

How do you get inspired to write?
Anne Sebba It is simply what I do. I am lucky to do something I love so much. Enid Bagnold, the subject of my first biography once said whether or not you have anything to write just go into your study and find something to say. it was terrific advice and I have tried to follow it. Inspiration doesn't come into it.
