Kate Folk Hi Donna! Thanks for this question. There isn't a firm connection honestly. I wanted the character to be from somewhere midwestern and suburban, and I must have landed on Wheaton after doing some internet research. I grew up in Iowa, but often find myself rooting characters in Illinois, maybe because it's similar but not exactly like where I grew up. There was also something about the name "Wheaton" that felt evocative to me, a kind of American everytown, symbolic of the stasis the narrator longed to eject herself from (though I'm sure it's a very nice place in reality)
