I read. I watch TV and movies. I listen to music. I keep my eyes and ears and nostrils open. I read some more.

Don't talk about writing, just write. And do not talk about whatever it is you're working on. Keep it inside of you until it's done. This will not only prevent your becoming bored with the project, it will motivate you to complete the story in order to finally have someone read it and, by extension, give you license to talk about it.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH: Life, Love & Death in Six Reels is set in my old hometown of Trenton, Ontario. The idea had been kicking around in my head for years, going back to my parents' tiny restaurant and the unlikely stories the regular customers felt compelled to share with me. These covered a variety of topics, including the tragedies and disasters that have plagued the town, plus its unexpected role in Canada's film-making past. After a much-publicized crime in 2010, the direction of the story became clear to me.
