Creating something out of nothing. I think the creation of art is a fascinating process. And as in art, so in life. We are all creating things all of the time. Mine just happens to be in words.

I met a woman named Nicole Loughan at a writer's conference who writes a mystery series. She encouraged me to revise my memoir, Crazy Quilt, and release it on Kindle. But when I went to revise it, I found myself wanting to write fictional scenes and spin off of it. So I went with it, and Mennonite on the Edge was born. If you put the two books side-by-side you can see how one would have definitely informed the other! I plan to go back and do the work of revising Crazy Quilt for re-release this year.

I read great works of literature that have stood the test of time, along with some of the greats in literature today. When writing a memoir, I read memoirs. When writing a novel, I read novels. When I wrote my last book, I had a stack of novels by my computer that I could open on occasion if I got stuck.

I'm working on a book about a young woman who is seeking to find the secrets of the universe. It's extremely fun to write!

Find a writer's group where you can share your work. This gives you structure, company, feedback, and a built-in audience. Don't worry about publication right away, unless there are opportunities in front of you. Focus on honing your craft first.

I usually write through it. I write whatever comes to mind, even it's the worst stuff I've ever written. Eventually you come out the other side. But you don't lose your muscle, so to speak, because you've kept up your routine. I also try to read in different genres. Mix it up as much as possible. This helped me a lot during one particularly long dry spell. I even got a cartoon book to draw cartoons and try something really different! Eventually, I began work that inspired me again.
