It came partly from my own experiences, from those people I knew in Rome, and partly from reading Italian news about antiquity theft. The characters are purely from my imagination and I don't know anyone who had the adventures that befell naïve Jake. My husband is innocent and we don't own any stolen items!

I keep a pad of paper by the bedside in case an inspiration hits in the middle of the night. But where do these ideas come from? From my experiences as a traveler and expat and from the lives of the people I have met over the years. And, of course, a heavy dose of imagination.

Join writer's groups and read magazines about writing (like Writer's Digest) to learn from them. Also, realize that you will receive both critique (helpful) and criticism (which can sometimes be upsetting) and keep on trying.
