The idea for my upcoming book was inspired very loosely by a personal experience I had of losing a very close friend. The aftermath of his death was pure chaos in certain ways, both tragic and also absurd and universal. It got me thinking about how we all behave when when we're grieving someone we love -- and why. What are we trying to hold onto?

I'd say my inspiration involves some combination between cultural phenomenons that I observe and personal experiences. Almost all of my books are about delayed coming of age in some way -- purely by accident. I get ideas most clearly when I'm away from everything for a moment -- sometimes from a dream even, sometimes while taking a walk or doing my hair.

You're never too young or old to start. Keep the faith. Know that rejection is part of the game for everyone. Know that sharing your stories will be worth it. Take notes, when they're good. Ignore notes, when they're bad. Don't panic if you don't have a ritual of getting up at 4am every morning to write. Everyone has their own way. And please, please, I implore you: don't misuse the word "resonate." It drives me insane.

In theory, write through it, though that's sometimes hard. But, yes, write even when the writing is terrible. It will always start to coming more easily with some time.
