I always think of writer's block as a lack of information. If I'm blocked, I need to do some research, call someone for clarification, or pose a question to my inner guides and then be quiet and listen. Without fail, reaching out for information that way gives me a new thread, a specific detail or a piece of inspiration that gets me moving again.

When I'm actively writing, I remember that every detail matters, and I go through my days seeing the connections and symbolism in everything...in the world around me, and the world within me. Being a writer means you get to experience life in all its richness and significance. Also, it often means that people will tell you their stories, which is a huge privilege.

It came to me on a day when I was feeling like the world was crashing in on me—not from any huge crises, but from a series of mundane life challenges. I was wallowing around in a mudpit of anger and frustration until I finally asked for help from a higher power. When I did, the prayer that inspired the book appeared. And before long, the book started to write itself.
