Nick Trout I am often asked "Why do dogs have such a short life compared to a human?" And we've all heard variations on one 'dog year' being the equivalent to seven 'human years.' It made me wonder about the possibility of a trade, a way to keep an animal in our lives, a Faustian bargain in which, fearing the loss of a companion, a human would be prepared to give up one year, of their own life, in order to keep their dog for seven more years. More interesting, the option to 'steal' that year from the past, the present, or the future (perhaps a little too Christmas Carol) and the impact it might have on the human-animal relationship.
Nick Trout This is pertinent to my day job, and in my line of work constitutes a horror story.

"Hi, this is Dr. Trout, just letting you know Molly did great under anesthesia, no problems with the surgery, and I'm confident she will adapt very quickly to the amputation."
"What . . . sorry . . . who is this . . . my Molly was dropped off for a dental cleaning this morning."
Nick Trout I'm caught between a return to non-fiction, perhaps my take on the new state of veterinary medicine, versus another work of fiction, a pet-centric novel, set in London at the start of World War II.
I'll be running these ideas by my agent over the next few weeks and who knows, something totally different might come to fruition.
