What's on at the movies 23rd Feb 2017?

Oscars this weekend ...... on Sunday night, Monday morning here in Australia, and I must say that I find it hard to pick winners. Usually I'm torn between a few films and actors but this last year I found the offerings a little lacking. So I'm guessing on my picks and this is based on my personal taste, since most of the nominated films I did not love at all. In fact, one of them I left halfway through I was so bored. Here goes with a few Oscar picks:Actor in a Leading RoleAndrew Garfield Hacksaw Ridge  (although they'll give it to Ryan Gosling probably or Casey Affleck, no idea why.)Actor in a Supporting RoleDev Patel Lion (they'll give it to Mahershala Ali for Moonlight because of last year's controversy.  Other than Lion the other films in this category made my most boring list for 2016.Actress in  a Leading RoleEmma Stone La La Land. I didn't love the film but I love her.Actress in a Supporting RoleOctavia Spencer Hidden Figures (probably they'll give it to Viola Davis for Fences, which was the film I walked out on.)DirectingDenis Villeneuve Arrival (but it will go to Damien Chazelle La La Land because he made a musical)Best PictureHidden Figures (I have my fingers crossed but there are so many dull films in this lot it could be anyonesBest Original ScreenplayLa La Land, again it's a musical. Terrible choices though (although I haven't seen 20th Century Women).WIN The Troubles Keeper Audible and eBookBy the way, I have a competition running until 28th February to win a copy of my eBook and Audible of The Troubles Keeper.  The more you share the more entries you receive.A Street Can Named Bob✪✪✪✪½Opened February 9I don't love cats. I don't love stories of down and out people (I find them too sad alaManchester by the SeaandThe Lady in the Van. I'm also, as you know, not keen on swearing or watching people taking drugs. Probably the trailer doesn't do this justice either, so on the Saturday morning of the preview I was expecting to be bored or angered to tears. Instead by the end I was moved to tears. So please take tissues.orCan you hear me purring? The movie was fabulous, although my heart was breaking through most of the story as we watched poor James Bowen attempt to get his life back on track.Of course Bob the cat steals the film. You would think some of the truth has been stretched a little. How can a cat behave in such a human-like way? Well, since Bob the cat actually acts in his own movie we are left with no doubt that this is an extraordinary animal and an incredible, life-affirming story. The feel good movie of the year. Please go and see this little gem. You will thank me for my recommendation later.Film BlurbThis film tells the moving and life-affirming true story of the unlikely friendship between a young homeless busker, James Bowen, and the stray ginger cat named Bob who changed his life.Hidden Figures✪✪✪✪✪Opened February 9This is the film I'm going to go out on a limb and call as the Best Picture winner for this year's Oscars, which will be announced on Sunday. At least I hope it wins over the other films since it's by far the most entertaining of all of them. AlthoughHacksaw RidgeandArrivalwere good too, but most of the others made my least entertaining list for the year, including Denzel Washington'sFences, where I left the screening after an hour because I was so bored. You've probably already had someone tell you to go see this and I will wholeheartedly agree. This is a great true story with everything we love in a big Hollywood film: good acting, a story that moves along at a pace, characters we can cheer on, and a happy and inspirational ending. Go see Hidden Figures, a fascinating film for all ages.Film BlurbHIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.Stars Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Costner.Trainspotting✪✪✪✪✪Opened 23rd February 2017I don't remember much about the first 1996 film except I couldn't understand why everyone loved it so much, so I wasn't expecting to enjoy this. Stories about drugged up criminals, filled with swearing and violence are definitely not my cup of tea. However I loved this.Danny Boyle(Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Weeks Later, Steve Jobs, 127 Hours, Shallow Grave) is a director at the height of his prowess. His stylized vision and quick paced editing, along with a killer sound track makes for an entertaining thrilling and, dare I say it, fun film experience. This will probably be one of my favorite films of the year and needs to be seen on the big screen so you are fully immersed in the on-screen antics and the music.  Just brilliant. StarsEwen McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Kelly MacDonald, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner.Film BlurbFirst there was an opportunity......then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.Handsome Devil✪✪✪✪Q&A with director John Butler on Fri 3 and Sat 4 MarLottery West Film FestivalMonday 27 Feb-March 5 UWA SomervilleTuesday 7 March-Sun 12 March ECU Joondalup PinesHandsome Devil is a cross between 2014Prideand the marvelous 2016Sing Street. The Irish don't make a lot of main stream films but they sure know how to create stories about coming of age angst and the politics surrounding key issues in society. I guess when your country has a recent history of internal turmoil there is much to say.Another feel good movie with a great soundtrack that probably won't get a big release anywhere but certainly if you catch it at a festival like we have in Perth, or on a streaming service in the future, you will be glad you watched.Film Blurb‘The sweetness, poignancy and breezy humour make it pretty darn impossible to resist.  The Hollywood ReporterLove books, love music, hate school.Studious Ned feels like the only one at his all-boys Irish boarding school who doesn’t share the school obsession with rugby. But at the start of a new term Ned’s world is rocked by his bold new English teacher, who encourages him to form an unlikely friendship with Conor, Ned’s tough but protective new roommate who happens to be a rugby star. Sweet, sympathetic and with a great indie soundtrack, Handsome Devil will delight those who remember the joy and pain of growing up.These films below opened in the previous few weeks but I didn't have a chance to post the reviews. So in case anyone was looking for my opinion on them, I am happy to deliver.Manchester by the Sea✪✪✪Opened February 2Manchester by the Sea has already won a Golden Globe for it's lead Casey Affleck (Ben's brother) for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, and I'm sure it will be a hot favorite at the Oscars to take a few wins. There is a lot to like about the film and if they shaved about twenty minutes off the run time and Kenneth Lonergan, who writes and directs, had a little more experience and a touch more confidence that he had delivered his message, this film could have knocked the experience out of the park.As it stands, the film is overlong and drags and watching Affleck work his way morosely through the nitty gritty of burying his brother and somehow helping his nephew through a terrible time is, as you would expect, quite depressing. However, there are also some wonderful screen moments. Michelle Williams has a small part but, in her final scene, boy, she packs a punch. Casey Affleck too, gives a wonderful portrayal and the story does make you ponder how quickly we judge other people without ever considering that, perhaps, they are not friendly or happy or smiley for a good reason. So I like it for that. There are also some well crafted scenes. Lonergan has a good eye. What he doesn't have is a good feel for pace, but if he directs more films I think he will be an interesting filmmaker to watch. This is a small film but not a terrible film. Just be warned it is difficult subject matter and you will need a happy place to visit after. However, every story teller has a right to tell their story, even if it is a miserable one. So I applaud Lonergan for taking on the challenge of creating this film from an idea brought to him by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, who then due to scheduling conflicts couldn't be involved.Film BlurbAfter the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.Patriot’s Day  ✪✪✪✪½Opened February 2Mark Wahlberg is one of the most underrated actors working today. He can play the funny guy PG or the R+guy in Ted, the action-sci-filead in The Transformers, and then he can do drama like the Oscar winners and be a convincing every-man.Last year, we enjoyed his documentary-drama Deepwater Horizon and here is again in another quality based-on-real-events film Patriots Day documenting the events during and directly after the terrible bombing at the Bottom Marathon finish line. This is edge-of-your-seat stuff and I spent half the movie with my hand over my mouth in horror as we watched the terrorists plan and execute their evil as though this was just a high school prank.Go see this film on the big screen. It's a good one and will leave you angry, but uplifted by the Bostonians. Those affected epitomize true heroism, along with the whole city that contributed to catching these evil men.Film BlurbAn account of the Boston Marathon bombing, PATRIOTS DAY is the powerful story of a community's courage in the face of terror. In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston..I hope you are enjoying my new website.  You can subscribe now and receive an alert whenever there is a new post. What's on at the movies 26th Jan 2017?

Lion✪✪✪✪½Opened January 19Lion is a partially Australian production, and that is something of which Australian cinema can be proud. After a particularly poor year in 2016 with Australian films out comes Lion, which was adapted from the Australian memoir ofSaroo Brierley, entitledLong Way Home.In 2013Screen Australiaand Fulcrum Media Finance would co-finance, while See-Saw, Sunstar, and Aquarius Films produced the film. TheWeinstein Companybought the worldwide distribution rights to the drama for$12 million in May 2014. In October 2014, Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman were cast in the film for the lead roles, and now finally it is here. The film has already received multiple nominations and won several international awards.Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel were also nominated for Golden Globes for their performances in a drama. If you think this looks like a good film, you would be right. Set partially in Tasmania Australia and also India, we are certainly drawn in by the terrible plight of poor, sweet five year old Saroo, lost in the big city ofCalcutta, who ends up adopted and living in Australia, but still haunted years later by his separation from his true family. This is an emotional journey and it could have degenerated into a miserable experience but the story is well crafted and becomes one of determination and ultimately uplifting result. There is still a lot of pain to witness on the screen, but this is a story worth watching and it is told well. You will shed quite a few tears at the end, so take tissues or have someone's shoulder handy.  We were fortunate enough to have Saroo and his mother at our screening to introduce the film. They seem to be remarkable, passionate, intelligent people. What a privilege to witness their story.Film BlurbFive-year-old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of Kilometers across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.  StarsDev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney MaraandDavid Wenham.Lion makes HistoryLION has posted the 5th biggest opening weekend for an Australian film of all time and the biggest ever opening weekend for an independent Australian film. With some cinemas still to report, the box office for the weekend of  $4,155,636 puts LION behind only the studio films The Great Gatsby, Australia, Happy Feet and Mad Mad: Fury Road in the opening weekend record books.  LION'S total box, including previews, now stands at $4,967,656.LION is also taking the world by storm. The film has also opened at number 1 at the NZ box office, number 4 at the UK box office and in the US has already taken $14.5m before going into wide release, with strong releases also posted in Canada, Italy and other major territoriesMoonlight✪✪✪Opened January 19This film won theGolden GlobeforBest Motion Picture - Drama. So it's been receiving a lot of buzz. Most likely it will receive an Oscar nod. I'm not sure why though. Maybe it's a response to the hullabaloo at last year's Academy Awards over Will Smith's exclusion from the nominations based on the color of his skin. That was hoo ha anyway. He was good inConcussionbut certainly his performance didn't warrant a nomination. Besides, everyone knows the Oscars are political and sometimes rewards are for a body of work. He hasn't supplied a body of solid enough work to get an add in when his performance or film didn't warrant it. End of rant.So I'm wondering if much ado has been made about Moonlight because of last year and that it is an African American story supposedly sharing a different perspective on life in the 'hood.'I didn't find it original, although it does have its moments of beautiful and interesting film-making. Boy grows up in the ghetto with drug addicted, prostitute mother and ends up struggling with bullying, which caused him to make poor choices and adapt to survive. I've seen that many times already and in a more entertaining story. In any case, despite the direction's fly-on-the-wall feel (a little likeRichard Linklater'samazingBoyhoodor the very goodFruitvale Station), I just couldn't engage with the story or the characters,  no matter how well they were portrayed. Purely a film for the cinephile and those who enjoy watching small, independent films. I learned nothing new and can't say it was an enjoyable experience.Film BlurbThe tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.XXX Return of Xander Cage✪✪✪½Opened January 19The firstXXXfilm in2002,with a much younger Vin Diesel, did reasonable box office, but unfortunately the follow up withIce Cubein 2005 didn't make back it's budget. With the success of theFast and Furiousfranchise, with it's over-the-top action car stunt sequences, I'm sure the studios were hunting around for another franchise to take over once cinema-goers tire of the cars, which at #8 in 2017 must be soon.I went in to the preview expecting little. I didn't love the originals, and I'm totally the wrong demographic. These are squarely aimed at male, late-teens to twenty-somethings and the girlfriends and wives who are dragged along, and can get by on watching shirtless muscle men (I know that is sexist but that's the truth). So I was surprised how much I enjoyed the crazy stunts and the tongue-in-cheek quips. This film is made to fit by Vin Diesel's swagger and charm. Without him, it would be a lot less and he's certainly found his niche. He'll never win an Oscar but he'll make stellar and bankable box office. Think the firstExpendablesbut for young, hip kids, and cross that with the crazy stunts ofFast and Furiousbut with every vehicle and human ability available, and that is XXX. I call itdumb fun. You'll forget it in a week, but sometimes dumb fun is a great way to while away a couple of hours.Film BlurbThe third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operativeXander Cage (Vin Diesel)coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora's Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series' signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, "xXx: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE" will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film. Also starsToni Collette, Donnie Yen (Rogue One)Split✪✪✪✪Opened January 26Blumhouse Studios, helmed by producer Jason Blum, are the makers of low to medium budget horror thriller flicks. In the past few years they have become hugely profitable, so much so that they are not so low budget anymore and can attract high calibre actors likeJames McAvoy,Joel Edgerton, and B-list actors and upcoming young stars that you will recognize but won't be able to name.M. Night Shyamalan, burst into cultural history as director and writer of the1999 Sixth Sense, thefilm with that amazing twist and incredible performance by child actorHaley Joel Osmont, alongside a suave and confident Bruce Willis. Then came another two solid films withUnbreakableandSigns, and we all thoughthere is our new favorite director. However Shyamalan went on to not just mediocracy, withhis next decade or so of films, he seemed to grow progressively worse at creating a solid story, culminating in the awful and Will Smith self-indulgent sci-fi inept rubbishAfter Earth. Then came recently the much better and smaller production via Blumhouse StudiosThe Visitand nowSplit.Well, welcome back M. Night. Split is, if nothing else, fascinating and intriguing to watch, anchored brilliantly by James McAvoy's incredibleportrayal of a man's multiple personalities. Why hasn't he been nominated for any major awards? Oh, that's right, horror and sci-fi are not worthy genres, even though they are huge at the box office and in print. While there are plenty of plot holes, it's far too freaky and fun to worry about them. This is still a B movie, but of the highest quality. I'm enjoying this resurgence of horror, with films likeUnfriended, Paranormal series, Ouija, Gallows,10 Cloverfied Lane, mostly thanks to Blumhouse Studios. They've got the formula right and they are laughing all the way to the bank. So who needs awards, right? I'm sure the sound of ka-ching is far sweeter than "And the winner is ... "Film BlurbWhile the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being. Though Kevin has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him - as well as everyone around him - as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.Toni Erdmann✪✪✪✪Opens Lottery West Film FestivalGerman and Romanian with English subtitlesMonday January 30-Sun 5 Feb UWA SomervilleTuesday February 7-Sun 12 ECU Joondalup PinesThis is one of those refreshingly different filmsyou hear about that sounds too crazy to work. Yet it does. Toni Erdmann is funny, sweet, and a different take on the usual American family comedy dramas that are so predictable and cliched. Performances by the leads Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek are really something. The film is long at 2 hours and 42 minutes, but you don't feel it too much. Yes, it could have been edited down but some of the long, lingering moments provide the gems in the film.ElleThis film says so much about relationships, judgement of others, and love. Well worth a viewing and a delightful addition to the festival season. There's talk of an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film. It was nominated for a Golden Globe but lost to provocative French film, which I didn't love. Warning there is full frontal nudity and provocative sexual behavior, but it's there for a reason. Go fall in love with Toni Erdmann.Film BlurbA father, a daughter, and a set of false teeth.A joyous, laugh-out-loud film so continually surprising that it has become the talk of film festivals from Cannes to Melbourne. ‘Toni Erdmann is the embarrassingly tactless buck-toothed alter-ego of Winfried Conradi, a recently retired schoolteacher with a penchant for ridiculous stunts. At a loose end and eager to reconnect with his serious and career-driven daughter Ines, Winfried decides to tag along on her important business trip in Bucharest and win her over with a relentless series of daft practical jokes. Full of rich detail and unexpected joy, Toni Erdmann is a constant, head-spinning delight.I hope you are enjoying my new website.  You can subscribe now and receive an alert whenever there is a new post. The Year of Watching Dangerously

Tis the last few days of 2016 and I know we are all saying where did the heck did the year go?On the 31st December, as we bid this year goodbye, many of us will make resolutions. So I'm going to suggest one resolute promise that we might make good on: let's create one act of extra kindness a week.I suggest this because I've become even more aware of how important kindness and generosity are after writingin which my character Rory Fine devotes himself to taking away people's troubles, believing that one act of kindness can change a person's day, and sometimes their life.We may not stay on a diet, or keep up that exercise or give up that bad habit, but I think we can do this. We could send a message to someone to remind them of why they are special. We could donate to charity, speak kindly and forgive when it may feel like the last thing we would like to do, and we can offer to help someone who is in need, emotionally or physically. Each time you do this, remind yourself you've fulfilled your promise for 2017, and you might even like to keep a note. One extra act of kindness might make a huge difference in another's life, as well as yours. Then you can feel triumphant next New Year's Eve that you have kept your resolution: one extra moment of kindness a week. From me, a massive thanks for being along for this amazing year of my writing career. More than 100,000 Susan May thrillers have made their way on to eReaders, been held in hands, and heard via Audibles. This success has been so unexpected and humbling I find it hard to believe. I look forward to continuing the journey in 2017 with more books, short stories and audibles on the way. Oh, and lots more competitions and giveaways.I wish you a wonderful new year celebration and here's to a big 2017 for all of us.And to you 2017, slow down a little, will ya ...Susan MayP.S. I've moved radio stations for 2017. I'm now on. They have a huge listener base and play the same kind of music as CurtinFM. I enjoyed a wonderful fun two years opposite Jenny Seaton and I've learned a lot from that wonderful, smart lady.Remember too, that you are invited to join my Facebook groupSusan Mayhem Gang. The place is a happening club with all sorts of activity every day, not to mention giveaways, so come meet us there. The year of watching dangerously(meaning it hasn't been a brilliant year for film)Normally when I’m asked to list my favorite films of the year the usual choices spring from those I’ve seen in the latter few months of the year. This is when the studios release their awards hopefuls and Academy nominee star-vehicles. Not so for 2016. This has been the weakest year for standouts since I began reviewing more than half a decade ago. Most of the films populating my favorites list are from the beginning of the year and those films fell into the 2016 Academy awards as nominees and winners. So I’m not able to give predictions for the upcoming 2017 Golden Globe and Oscar awards.Even thoughThe Revenantwas my favorite film for last year, it could easily slip into this year as the Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar winner was released in Australia 7th January 2016.Spotlightis another fabulous film released in January revealing the true-life story of the Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic church’s cover-up of the local archdiocese’s child molestation case. I walked out of that film speechless. The Big Shortanother true story, which artfully and in a surprisingly comedic way explores how the financial crisis evolved and damaged so many lives. These were in January this year and then other than the engrossing Helen Mirren modern wartime dramaEye in the Sky, and a couple of others, the rest of the year has been mostly okay, peppered more than normal with dull, drab and dastardly film watches. My top film in the second half would, without a doubt, be the Australian-made crowd-pleaser Mel Gibson’sHacksaw Ridge. Fingers crossed Hollywood politics don’t prevent the Academy from recognizing Mel Gibson’s inspiring and incredible war film. I liked the more recent Sully and Allied as solid dramas too.Disney’s Queen of Katwais also a true gem.If we are talking comedy and family films, I thoughtCentral Intelligencewith the perfect pairing of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart was a real winner. I’d sit through that one again.Eddie the Eagle, mid year, was also a goodie for the whole family, andDisney’s Zootopiawas a lovely animation.Science fiction and fantasy films abounded this year. The biggest release beingFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, an offshoot of the Harry Potter franchise, with the screenplay written by J.K. Rowling.  This one the first of five.Arrival,an alien contact drama, was a reviewer favorite film and the just releasedPassengersis another flashy and stylish futuristic vehicle for the two charismatic stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, who do that thing they do so well—charm us.For the super hero fans, we were inundated this year with the start or really the second start to the DC Comics world ofJustice LeaguewithBatman v Superman(following 2013Man of Steel) and the box-office killerSuicide Squad.Marvel furthered their franchise world with the fun, if not a little repetitious,Captain America Civil War,the anti-heroDeadpool, and the surprise of the year, the super-interesting but unknown until now, heroDoctor Strange.Probably in my top ten films of the year are three Australian documentaries,Sherpa, Chasing Asylum, andEmbrace. Sherpa an Australian production told the incredible and tragic story of the Sherpas of Mount Everest.Chasing Asylumexposed a terrible truth about Australia’s treatment of Asylum Seekers or should I say the government’s treatment. I don’t think Australians would want anyone treated in what was shown in this behind-the-scenes film.Embraceproduced by Taryn Brumfitt taught us why we should love ourselves no matter what and this film made me proud to be Australian. Most disappointing film of the year would beStar Wars Rogue One,leaving us all feeling as though ‘we had to like it because its Star Wars when, in reality, it was only okay. And my least favorite films wereA Pigeon Climbed out onto a Branch, Queen of the Desert, Girl Asleep, and the deplorableBad Santa 2, along with any that fell into the category of silly American films, which celebrate binge drinking, swearing and sleeping around. Ugh, they are just boring and unfunny. After much thought, and if I ignore all those films that have already been nominated and won Oscars, I would have to say my three favorite films of the year areEye in the Sky,Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, andCentral Intelligencejust because they offered something different and memorable.Of the current releases for December and January, with the school holidays in full swing, you can’t go wrong withDisney’s Moanaand it’s fabulous animation. However, I thinkSingwith such great voice talent like Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane and many others, along with snappy pop songs and a simple story, will capture the hearts of both young and old. For a great drama,A United KingdomorAllied, and if you can handle the bad languageWhy Him?is funny. I could probably say ofRed Dog: True Bluethat it's not up to the story-telling quality of its predecessor, although many who have seen this enjoyed. I think the makers would have been better to let sleeping dogs lie, but money calls.2016 wasn’t a great film year for us reviewers. After seeing, for myself, 137 films on screen, I think we groaned more than we cheered. Still I don’t think many will pity our tough breaks. Sitting in a darkened cinema munching on popcorn is never going to be called a hard slog. Here’s to a richer cinema experience in 2017.Free books from me and news on film and my world. As I was changing radio stations I didn't write up reviews for all the films I saw in the last few weeks. However, I'd already written a review for Sing, so here it is ...Sing✪✪✪✪Opened December 26Sing is a delightful film with the cream of voice talent.Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johannson, Seth MacFarlane, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Saunders, Nick Offermantransform what might be a very simple story and a film easily dismissed as just another kids' animation into one heck of a toe-tapping, enjoyable event. While this film won't win awards for innovation or extraordinary animation,Singsticks to the tried and true device of cute animals portraying realistic human situations and emotions. What might allow Sing to surpass the box office of the oh-so-slickly animatedDisneyholidays' musical offeringMoanais the choice of using well known recent musical hits and springing for top-notch voice talent. Kids and parents can easily recognize these songs, and two days later I still can't getTaylor Swiftout of my head. This has a great message, well delivered and without any ten minute navel-gazing lag in the second act. What I found most incredible, and why I've given the film four stars, is that the preview I attended was filled with young children. Yet there wasn't a rustle or a cry through thewhole one hour forty-eight minutes. This never happens, not even in well known franchises likeIce Age. Kids are always bored after forty odd minutes and up and down the aisles. Not so here. I was also told by a grandma nearby that her twelve year old loved it. So not just little kids. This one is a safe bet.Film BlurbA koala impresario stages a grand singing competition for the world's animals in order to save his elegant theater in this quirky animated musical. You can subscribe now and receive an alert whenever there is a new post. What's on at the movies Dec 1 2016?

Did you miss the Facebook Live Fun?No need to feel left out ...I'm excited to share a new opportunity for writers or book lovers. My Susan Mayhem Gang Facebook group is now hosting Facebook Live chats with little old me. We all had great fun on the first chat yesterday, where a bunch of fabulous people joined me from around the world (truly amazing) while I shared my thoughts and experiences in my publishing journey, particularly focusing on writing short stories. Those who joined in were able to ask questions and respond and interact with me and each other. Everyone said they enjoyed the experience and I think some were motivated to write more themselves or at least gain insight into the writing process, weird as I probably made it sound. The video is still there in the group feed and you can join anytime and watch. From now on I will be hosting a live chat once a week, where we'll discuss books, writing, theread-a-longcurrently ofBehind Dark Doors (one), which you can grab for zilch, free, nada, absolutely nothing just byor visiting Instafreebie link:You are invited to join my Facebook groupSusan Mayhem Gang. We are having a real ball there, so come meet us.Queen of Katwe✪✪✪✪½Opened December 1A Ugandan girl, child really, working her way up the ladder to compete for her country in international Chess competitions sounds about as riveting as watching darts. Okay, I've heard if you are into darts the competitions are exciting, but still not your first thought for sporting entertainment. This film will not be on anyone's must-see list. Queen of Katwe is not getting studio promotion; it didn't even receive a word-of-mouth preview because it didn't make big box office in the USA upon its release. But will you please seek this film out and see on the big screen. This is a type ofSlum Dog Millionairestory about a girl who couldn't read or write but turns out to be a chess prodigy with the right attitude and a brilliance for foreseeing eight moves ahead in the game. With the right word of mouth this could be big. I fear it won't though because without that whisper in a friends ear nobody will even notice next to all the other big films, but please don't you and your family miss out on this Disney treasure.Queen of Katwe is also probably one of the most inspiring films of the year and could launch a dozen positive thinking memes. Starring recent Oscar winnerLupita Nyong'o  (12 Years a Slave)andDavid Oyelowo(Selma, A United Kingdom)and a cast of marvelous extras, this film is quality from beginning to end. Madina Nalwanga who plays Phiona Mutesi the young chess prodigy holds her own playing beside these experienced and awarded actors.Take your parents, your children and yourself and enjoy one of the most entertaining, fascinating and most uplifting experiences of the year. When we sit in a cinema and complain that it's too hot or too cold outside, our popcorn is too salty, or the seats uncomfortable or not cleaned well enough this film reminds you that we Australians were handed a gift at birth we too easily take for granted.Film Blurb"Queen of Katwe" is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. StarringDavid Oyelowowho receivedGolden Globe Award, Film Independent Spirit Award nominationsand won theNAACP Image Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Kingand thefilm received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.Trolls✪✪✪✪½Opened December 1I couldn't make it to this preview, so I sent my friend Reiko and her family along. She has boys aged 12 and 13 and this is what she thought:Trolls was a lovely kids movie! Visually it was well made with beautiful colours and I loved it. It's a positive happy story that ended making all Bergens feeling happy, music was great, funny as well and characters are so cute. I bet these trolls dolls will be seen at toy stores before this Christmas and will be very popular for young kids. I rate 4.5/5.Based on her recommendation I'm going to catch this film as soon as I can. I also heard back from other reviewers that it was a good one and a very positive uplifting experience that gave food for thoughts. Who would have thought those little hairy critters could inspire and delight toughened reviewers.Film BlurbA hair-raising comedy filled with unbelievable adventure & incredible music! Known for their crazy, colourful, & magical hair, Trolls are the happiest, most joyous creatures ever to burst into song. From the genius creators of SHREK, TROLLS stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the Trolls, & her polar opposite, Branch, played by Justin Timberlake. Together, this unlikely pair of Trolls must embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the only world they’ve ever known.Morgan✪✪½Opens December 1This film had the potential to be a slick, smart sci-fi thriller but, alas, they went for the tried and true ten little Indians scenario of science experiment gone wrong kills off maker ala Frankenstein. There's a reasonable cast led byKate Mara(The Martian) and a ridiculous cameo byPaul Giamattiand some overwrought performances byTobyJones, Jennifer Jason Leigh, andMichelle Yeoh.I wondered how this film actually got off the ground, despite being produced by Ridley Scott. How did such a poor script by a relative unknown screenwriter entice A and nearly A list actors to become involved? All this comes as no surprise once you learn that director Luke Scott is Ridley Scott's son.All I can say is, not terrible, but just particularly cliche for this genre with some huge plot holes or, let's say, bizarre character behavior and motivation. You'd probably enjoy it as a stream or a DVD on a Friday night. Otherwise watch Alien or Aliens again or giveEx Machinaa look on DVD/Stream.Film BlurbMorgan (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a bioengineered child who began walking and talking after one month of existence, exceeding the wildest expectations of her creators. When Morgan attacks one of her handlers, a corporate troubleshooter (Kate Mara) visits the remote, top-secret facility where she's kept to assess the risks of keeping her alive. When the girl breaks free and starts running amok, the staff members find themselves in a dangerous lockdown with an unpredictable and violent synthetic human. From director Luke Scott and producer Ridley Scott, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti.Up for Love(not reviewed)Opened December 1I didn't see this film but I certainly love Jean Dujardin after seeing him in his Oscar winning performance of The Artist. I will catch this one during its cinema run because the plot just tickles my funny bone.  Check the reviews of this from Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB to get and idea about whether you might enjoy. I like French comedy. They have a quirky sense of the world. Maybe this comes from eating all those snails and frog legs.Film BlurbA hair-raising comedy filled with unbelievable adventure & incredible music! Together, this unlikely pair of Trolls must embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the only world they’ve ever known.Underworld Blood Wars (not reviewed)Opened December 1I'm not a fan of this series and I couldn't make the preview.  However they wouldn't keep making these films if there weren't fans out there to see them and they didn't return on the studios investment. This is the fifth film in the franchise I believe. If nothing else, fans of females wearing leather can enjoy. There is some talk this is about introducing a possible TV series in the future. That's a good idea. I think it will fare better on the small screen in a streaming service. Reviewers don't get a chance to see many of those, so it can sneak under the radar. Vampires have never been my cup of tea, but if you have enjoyed the series or like these kind of action paranormal films I'm sure you will see it and possibly enjoy.Film BlurbThe next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.Little Men✪✪✪½Opens Lottery West Film FestivalMonday November 28-Sun 4 UWA SomervilleTuesday December 6-Sun 11 ECU Joondalup PinesWhen they say this is a sweet slice of New York life this is the absolute truth. Expect not a big film and on the shortish side at 85 minutes but enough is said in that time to make you think.A layered film with many messages that seep into you hours after the film is done. I took a lot from this film that I already understood about life. No matter how dramatic, events do fade and we all move on with our lives. Everyone's perspective on right and wrong comes from their own interests. A wonderful story with sharp dialogue and fabulous performances from the young actors. Perfect beginning to the Lottery West Film Festival. Bring on summer and outdoor cinema.Film BlurbA sweet slice of New York life in which two teenage friends try to be the best ‘little men they can be. When his family moves from Manhattan to Brooklyn, thoughtful art student Jake is happy to meet funny, outgoing new neighbour Tony. But Jake’s family has just become landlord to Tony’s mother, who is struggling to pay the bills. Jake and Tony just want to be friends, but their parents sure are making that hard. This is a crazy true story that will have you wondering what the heck is going on and then when you begin to understand, you begin to sympathize with both sides. Truly a wonderful, charming, fun film that, unfortunately, is true. Fabulous lead actress Zuzana Maurery is fabulous. I wonder if this might get a nod at the Oscars for foreign language. Something different that can be enjoyed by everyone.Film BlurbA stern teacher oversteps the mark. This audience favourite casts a wickedly humorous eye over the recent European past. What's on at the movies Nov 24 2016?

a moment of thanksToday isThanksgiving in the USAas I write this, and even though we Aussies don't have a thanksgiving day, I am always reminded this time of year that we take so much for granted.I wish there was a world Thanksgiving day so we could all stop for a moment and take stock of our lives. Now some people may not have a lot to be grateful for, but many like my family, are fortunate and wealthy. Not in dollars but in enjoying a wonderful close family and living without fear.My thoughts are with any human being who is displaced, not permitted to express their beliefs without fear, or who doesn't enjoy the basics of life like shelter, food, and clothing. We try and do our bit here but I'm reminded we should do more.Thank you to my friends in the USAfor reminding us on this day every year that we must give thanks. I am grateful for my life, my family and for so many wonderful people who support my writing career. I will never stop pinching myself and thanking my lucky stars and you.READ-a-LONG andFree Behind Dark Doors (one)Join a bunch of us good people at my Facebook groupand enjoy a read-a-long of my short stories starting 1st December.Even if you don't plan to join us feel free to read the thread or just follow the link below and grab the book. I just love the idea of new readers enjoying my work.In December we can start on Behind Dark Doors (two). So stay tuned to this newsletter.GRAB YOUR COPY HERE IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE BOOKThe Founder✪✪✪½Opened November 24In the nineties I read the bookBehind the Arches by John F. Love, so I knew what to expect with this film. In fact, you might be surprised to know that, as much Ray Kroc comes off in the end as being driven and unrepentant in some of his questionable business moves, according to the book, in real life he was worse.Michael Keaton is superbly cast and there has been some talk of awards' nominations. The season is upon us, so you will hear a lot of "This film nominated for ..." Doesn't always mean they are good, so be warned. I suspect Keaton has a good chance. He was pipped at the winning Oscar post, with his nomination in 2015 forBirdman,byEddy Redmayne'sextraordinary performance inThe Theory of Everything. So the Academy does like to reward those who miss out due to accidental timing. While this is an interesting and definitely enjoyable film because of Keaton and the very good supporting cast, the choices made by the screenwriter and director in what parts of the very large story to tell and a little repetition means that sometimes the pace feels labored. Engaging but definitely not as wonderful as directorJohn Lee Hancock'sprevious award winnersSaving Mr BanksandThe BlindsideMcDonalds has created an interesting legacy. They do much good but they were also one of the companies in the forefront of creating a bad health epidemic, which the world is still dealing with right now. Having built and run a franchising company in the nineties myself, I definitely can understand how some of his choices, toward the end of the film, appear villainous (and, look, they probably were), but business sometimes is business. This film will create debate in those that see on his and his company's behavior. You will also feel hungry, so eat first.Film BlurbFrom director John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr Banks, The Blindside), based on an original screenplay by Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) comes the astonishing true story of how Ray Kroc, a salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s southern California. Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton stars as the maverick American entrepreneur Ray Kroc, who transformed McDonald’s from a San Bernardino hamburger stand into a global empire now with over 35,000 locations around the world.Billy Lynn's Long Half-time Walk✪✪✪Opens November 24Perhaps one of this film's greatest accomplishments will most likely be the cause of its downfall. Industry standard for cinema films is 24 frames per second. Peter Jackson doubled that in filmingThe Hobbitand divided audiences on the effect. Personally, I found some of the traveling scenes looked like home movies and this is where the complaints began as the affect was akin to soap opera visuals. Therefore, veteran directorAng Leetook a risk and really pushed the boundaries in deciding to film Billy Lynn at 120 fps, the first film created with this technology. The effect is such that cinema goers would be immersed inside the story. Everything would become hyper real. In fact, your brain would be tricked, to a degree, into believing you are there.Sounds amazing, right? Well, only one challenge. There are only two cinemas in the USA equipped to screen the film in the new format and I don't think there are any in Australia. Afterseeing the film last night the discussion among reviewers was that the characters speaking direct to camera was annoying and the cinematography had the feel of a theatrical production.Only upon doing some research later did I discover this was the reason. The effectwasmeant to be that of experiencing theater but, of course, without watching it at the correct frame rate we are just left with a shadow of what Lee was hoping to deliver. The storyline isn't fabulously exciting. There are some solid scenes and interesting, reasonably developed characters, if not a little cliche. The commentary on war is the same 'ol same 'ol but still relevant. You won't be bored but you won't feel uplifted like you do after Hacksaw Ridge. And certainly the action is not there despite being referred to constantly in the lead up to the final scenes. This could have been a great film and an incredible experience. The story falters occasionally and doesn't have a sense of when to hit it's dramatic beats. However, I'm sure if we had experienced Billy Lynn the way Ang Lee intended I'd be writing a different review.Film BlurbThree-time Academy Award® winnerAng Lee(Life of Pi, Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel.  The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour.  Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions.Billy Lynn is also a giant step forward in the art of cinema, made with a cinematographic process years ahead of its time. With a brilliant supporting cast, including Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, and Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel and Steve Martin.Bad Santa 2✪Opened November 24Yes, we remember enjoying the first Bad Santa thirteen years ago (Yes! that's thirteen years ago) but nobody I spoke to could remember why we liked the first or what it was really about. I remember Billy Bob Thornton's character was an anti-hero, the script had wit, and that was it.Ugh, this one needs to simply remove the Santa from the title and the title can be it's own review.Bad 2.This is about as low as you can go. Certainly, it wins the award for the most irrelevant F-bombs in a film. I do make exceptions to crass films if they are funny (TrainwreckstarringAmy Schumer, a case in point). However, this isn't funny but more simply embarrassing for all those involved. This should never have gotten a cinema release.Just because it has Santa in the title don't even think about taking your kids. This is strictly for adults and especially for those who like to check their brains at the door. I'm happy to check my brain before entering some films (I'm one of the few reviewers who usually enjoys Adam Sandler films) but in this case you'll also need to check your funny bone or you will be disappointed.Kathy BatesandBilly Bob Thorntonwhat the heck were you thinking?Film BlurbBAD SANTA 2 returns Academy Award (R)-winnerBILLY BOB THORNTONto the screen as America's favorite anti-hero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (TONY COX), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is 'the kid' - chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (BRETT KELLY), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie's sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Academy Award (R), Golden Globe and Emmy-winner KATHY BATES, as Willie's horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. The Fencer✪✪✪✪Opened November 24Estonian and Russian with English subtitlesFinnish director Klaus Härö's films have wonmore than 60 prizes at festivals all over the worldincluding The Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and the prestigious Ingmar Bergman prize, the winner of which was chosen by Ingmar Bergman himself. I'm not surprised. He has a magnificent eye for cinematography. This film is like watching poetry on screen. That's not to say it is some kind of literary production that's all good looks and no grunt. The Fencer is a drama with everything. Cute kids, a touch of romance, a possibly dark hero, and a challenge for the under dogs to overcome. This film first appeared in the Perth Scandinavian film festival, which is interesting in itself as the film is the story of an Estonian true life saga. Not sure where the Finnish connection comes in, but it's another story of the consequences of the war on ordinary people who surprise themselves how their morals can be swayed. If you are a lover of Eastern European foreign language films or an admirer of fine cinema, you will enjoy this film. Not to mention, the fencing is quite co-production2016 Golden Globe nominee Best Foreign Language Film2016 Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film (SHORTLIST)2016 Finnish Academy Awards Best Film, Best Cinematography2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival Best FilmFilm BlurbIt’s 1953, and Endel (Märt Avandi) is on the run. With his war-time affiliations catching up with him, he eludes the secret police in Leningrad and flees to a remote Estonian village. There he tries to keep a low profile by taking a menial job in the sports department at the local school, but his efforts to give the students a proper physical education are quickly frustrated by a lack of resources. But once Endel a skilled fencer locates a few foils in the gym, he starts an after-school club for the kids, who for their part are eager to learn. Yet the strong rapport he builds with his young students only raises the ire of the party-loyalist school principal, who’s already suspicious of his past. What's on at the movies Nov 17 2016?

Bargain price book from me!A few bookish items to mention. I have Deadly Messengers on sale for a few days at 99c in USA and 99p in the UK. Sorry to everyone outside those territories but I'm running Kindle Countdowns and Amazon only allows those two.If youenjoy Audibles then for only an extra $1.99you can add the Deadly Messengers audible narrated by Anne Johnstonbrown who was Audible female voice of the year in 2013. That is a mad ... $2.98 for an ebook and audible. Say what?Click on the cover to go to the store or read a preview.Deadly Messengers sale ends on November 22nd midnight. So what are you waiting for? One buck for ten hours of entertainment.Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them✪✪✪✪✪Opened November 17Remember the first time you saw Star Wars in 1977? How original and enchanting the characters were? How immersive the world? What a thrill ride the film was because you didn't know where the story was going? And the first Harry Potter film in 1991? Not assurprising because we all had read the books but still fabulous, mesmerizing and oh so entertaining. Prepare yourself for the same experience withFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.English director David Yates helms this wild and immersive tale, which is a side story of the wizards and witches world created by J.K. Rowling. Yates directedOrder of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood PrinceandDeathly Hallows: Part 1and2so, of course, he brings that wealth of experience to the project. The film was produced and written By J.K. Rowling (her screenwriting debut) and the tale is inspired by her book of the same name written in 2001 under the pseudonym of Newt Scamander (the now lead character of the film played by Eddy Redmayne). The book was mentioned in the novelHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneorPhilosopher's Stonefor UK.Yes, the special effects and 1920s New York sets are the big stars but without Eddy Redmayne's portrayal of the shy, magical-creature-loving wizard this film would be so much less. The supporting cast of Colin Farrell, thecharming Dan Fogler as thenomaj (muggle) who is dragged into the adventure and reasonably unknown actors such as Katherine Waterston, Samantha Morton and Ezra Miller, all add so much to this that there isn't a moment where you are not under the spell of the story.Four more films have been announced, releasing in two year intervals (darn, I can't wait). The book of the screenplay is published today (18th November). And the J.K. Rowling juggernaut rolls on, deservedly so. An interesting aside is that J.K. Rowlings is a hybrid author. She actually owns the ebook rights to her books in many territories only cutting deals with publishers for paperback releases. Everything goes through her brand Pottermore. This is one smart woman and the reason she is reportedly worth $1.0 billion. The Harry Potter brand is valued at $15 Billion and the films have grossed $7.7 billion. How could anyone have foreseen this future back in the early nineties when the publication rights for the first book went for $4,000. Did I mention this film is enchanting. I'm seeing it again as soon as possible.Interesting facts:Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was made on a budget of $180 million, with an additional $150 million spent on marketing. Worldwide, the film is expected to earn around $160205 million on its opening weekend from around 64 markets.Principal photography on the film commenced on 17 August 2015, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. After two months, the production moved to St George's Hall in Liverpool, which was transformed into 1920s New York. Filming concluded on 28 January 2016.Initially, in October 2014, the studio announced the film would be the start of a trilogy.Film BlurbThe magic of Harry Potter lives on in this Warner Bros. spin-off penned by {J.K. Rowling}, and intended as the first chapter in a whole new fantasy film franchise. ~ Jason Buchanan, RoviI, Daniel Blake✪✪✪✪Opens November 17A man who is on sick leave while he recovers from aheart attack, who learns the difficulty of navigating the English (and probably most first world countries') welfaresystem, with all its bureaucracy laid bare, does not sound like a riveting film.Don't be fooled. This is like the 2014 Oscar winning filmWhiplash; a simple human challenge studied in glorious and perceptive detail. You will love this film and cry hopelessly at the end.Dave Johns', who plays Daniel Blake, only previous acting role has been as a comedian. That is surprising considering how well he portrays a man who sees clearly the absurdity in rules for rules sake. Not surprising then is the humor and poignancy he infuses into Daniel Blake. Hayley Squires, another newcomer, who plays the single mum also caught up in the system, and who Daniel befriends, is also quite incredible despite being a newcomer. This is a quality independent film from Ken Loach who mostly chooses social commentary stories to tell and does a darn good job of it.Film BlurbDaniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie's only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn't know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man's land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of 'striver and skiver' in modern day Britain.I hope you are enjoying my new website.  You can subscribe now and receive an alert whenever there is a new post. If there seems to be a few Australians in the cast that is because it was filmed entirely in Australia in 2015 under a deal with the Australian Government. Filming in Bringelly NSW and Fox Studios, production required the clearing of over 500 hectares of land including deforesting 80 trees, which producers replanted and rehabilitated after filming ceased. Apparently the film brought in 720 jobs and US$19 million to regional and rural New South Wales. As you are watching this film don't be surprised if you wonder where it is going and where are these gut-wrenching, violent scenes the reviewers have reported. They are coming in a finale that will leave you breathless. You will also wonder how this story of a real-life hero could possibly be true and how much embellishment have the scriptwriters written in. Don't worry, all will be revealed during the title credits. Incredible, breath-taking and probably the best battle sequences you have ever seen, and possibly surpassing that still amazing Spielberg opening sequence ofSaving Private Ryan. Another must see in the cinema.Film BlurbHACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa at the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without carrying a gun.The Light Between Oceans✪✪✪✪Opened November 3This is the film of the 2012 novel of the same name by West Australian author M. I've since learned how beloved this book actually is and I was told after the screening by several folk who had read the novel that this is a very accurate and wonderful adaptation. If you've seen the trailer you know what you are in for and my one negative comment is that said trailer pretty much gives you half to two thirds of the film.  Still the story is beautifully realized and it is great to see such a good production filmed in Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand.Alicia Vikander is truly the Meryl Streep of this era. Everything she does on screen is mesmerizing. I did call this about four years ago after seeing her in the Danish filmA Royal Affairstarring Mads Mikkelsen who also starred recently inDoctor Strange.Probably one for the ladies. However, the guys at my screening also enjoyed and commented on the stunning cinematography, but they are film reviewers so are far more equal opportunity with the chick flicks. Sorry that's a tad sexist, more female orientated films. I loved it. Another thought-provoking film about very human choices that might damn you.Film BlurbIn the years following World War I, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a young veteran still numb from his years in combat, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. As the island's sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school's headmaster, Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), in the local town of Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island. As their love flourishes, he begins to feel again, their happiness marred only by their inability to start a family, so when a rowboat with a dead man and infant girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes their prayers may have finally been answered. As a man of principle, Tom is torn between reporting the lost child and pleasing the woman he loves, and against his better judgment he agrees to let Isabel raise the child as their own, making a choice with devastating consequences.Arrival✪✪✪✪Opened November 10ThinkClose Encounters of the Third KindmeetsLost in TranslationmeetsContactand even a small indie sci-fi film you may have missedMonsters, along with any invasion movie where the USA are the ones who are most likely to connect with the aliens. The plot sounds like a blockbuster in the making but don't be fooled. This is a story about humanity, language and the dangers of not taking your time to understand the other guy before you take action. Some might find this a touch slow and far too esoteric. The palettes and unusual visual direction and small details though, build an experience not often found in films of this genre.  Amy Adams is superb. When the camera is on her, you are inside her mind. The true star though, is the vision of staying true to an idea despite the possible detraction from the box office for not over dramatizing events. There's something particularly immersive about this film and that is due to French Canadian Denis Villeneuve's skill as a director (Prisoners, Sicario, Enemy, Incedies). This film is layered with thought-provoking ideas, moody color sci-fi fans looking for something realistic and understated but that will still blow your mind. Calling all  Your film has arrived. While it has merit and Tom Ford handles the dark noir feel of the film superbly, I found the first half confusing, with the internal story within a story and flashbacks that are not well defined.Again this is one of those films where the trailer does not accurately portray the film. This is not about something Amy Adams character did, which is covered up as you are led to believe. It's simply a film about relationships and choices and their affect on lives. In the middle of the story there is a kidnapping that, while it is quite devastating to watch, doesn't fit so well with the high concept. Interesting film for cinephiles, but I would call this a good quality B mystery noir.Film BlurbWinner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival. What's on at the movies Oct 27 2016?

My latest release The Troubles Keeper is still at at the bargain price of99c until 31st October. So far it's made it into the Top 3 new releases in Horror on Amazon USA with a rating of  4.30 out of 5 stars. You can grab your very own copy or read for free in Kindle Unlimited or Kindle Prime byto check it out orclick on the cover to the left to read a preview. Here's a link to the book on Good Reads:Doctor Strange✪✪✪✪1/2OpenedOctober 27Who is Doctor Strange you ask? He's a Marvel comic book hero who came to life in the early sixties. With so many spin offs of Marvel superheroes and now the DC comic crew, superhero films are becoming just a little "Okay, here's another one. What could they possibly do next?" So even though we don't doubt the quality of Disney's Marvel franchise world, having never heard of Doctor Strange I went along anticipating a just okay film. What you can't factor is the magic this new character literally brings to the Marvel world. Not to mention a stellar cast who elevate this film into one of my favorites of the year. I could easily sit through it again. Benedict Cumberbatch, I love you. You can do absolutely anything and pull it off. From Sherlock Homes to Alan Turing in The Imitation Game to Doctor Strange, without skipping a beat. And that's the thing with this film, it hits all the beats and the multiverse world in which the characters live is mesmerizing. So too, Tilda Swinton's portrayal of The Ancient One (I love her as well). Throw in Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen as the antagonist and you have it all.Go see this film on the big screen in 3D. You will enjoy movie magic. Some films are just not made for television and this one is worth the ticket entry.Film BlurbA disgraced former surgeon named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a powerful sorcerer under the tutelage of a mystic known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star in this entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister).Hell or High Water✪✪✪Opened October 27This film has received some fantastic reviews, ranking 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. So I expected a great heist drama. The acting by Chris Pine and Ben Foster is solid; Jeff Bridges mumbles all the way through so I can't comment on his acting. He seemed good but I just can't understand him. Maybe a voice couch is needed? However, I found the story just went on and on and the writer and director didn't seem to have the confidence to take a step forward at each point and know the audience got 'it'. So instead we were treated to pretty dullish character driven scenes in between the action. It's okay. Just don't go along expecting a tense drama likeSicario. I say this because the marketing team are promoting that the same writer Taylor Sheridan wrote both films and I think he missed by a little with this one. Twenty minutes shaved and it would have received another 1/2 star.Film BlurbTexas brothers--Toby (Chris Pine), and Tanner (Ben Foster), come together after years divided to rob branches of the bank threatening to foreclose on their family land. For them, the hold-ups are just part of a last-ditch scheme to take back a future that seemed to have been stolen from under them. Justice seems to be theirs, until they find themselves on the radar of Texas Ranger, Marcus (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last grand pursuit on the eve of his retirement, and his half-Comanche partner, Alberto (Gil Birmingham). As the brothers plot a final bank heist to complete their scheme, and with the Rangers on their heels, a showdown looms at the crossroads where the values of the Old and New West murderously collide.Elle✪✪✪Opened October 27Most of the reviewers who saw this with me thought it was amazing. This was mainly due to the layers and complexity of a story that is right out there on the edge. However, I felt the complexity of the lead character Elle was actually a detraction. I wasn't sure if I was meant to despise or pity her. I found, in the end, that the whole thing was highly implausible.Although I do find myself thinking back to the film occasionally and pondering the whole set up.Warning:This is a highly provocative film involving rape, with nothing left to the imagination. The trailer makes the story out to be a stalker-revenge film, but that isn't quite on the mark. See this if you feel you would enjoy your head spun by characters withserious issues.Film BlurbMichèle seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle's life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game-a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.I, Daniel Blake✪✪✪✪Opened October 27A man who is on sick leave while he recovers from aheart attack, who learns the difficulty of navigating the English (and probably most first world countries') welfaresystem, with all its bureaucracy laid bare, does not sound like a riveting film.Don't be fooled. What's on at the movies Oct 20 2016?

For those interested in grabbing my latest book The Troubles Keeper at a bargain price of 99c,the book will be available from 23rd October. That give-away price will be for 48 hours. So do grab it. Even better, join my mailing list club so you can share all the news about the launch and be reminded its time to read your next great book.So far it has over 67 ratings with a score of 4.35 out of 5. So I'm thrilled and very proud of this novel. Here's a link to the book on Good Reads:Ouija: Origin of Evil✪✪✪OpenedOctober 20Horror films don't do well in Australia, so over the past few years most horror has gone straight to DVD or streaming. However, this genre has enjoyed a reversal of fortune over the past eighteen months, led predominantly by Blumhouse studios (Paranormal, The Visit, Sinister, Unfriended), the masters of low budget, high-return thriller/horror fests. We're talking $5 to $10 million investment for a $60 to $120 million return. Not bad.The few recent horror films we've seen on screen have been reasonably entertaining, so the studios are beginning to release more and more. This is a prequel to the 2014 straight-to-videoOuijafilm. There is quite a bit to like. Set in 1967, the feel of the era has been captured well. The actors, especially the children, do a good job for aBfilm. Interesting to see Elizabeth Reaser (Twilight) and Henry Thomas (little boy in ET) in this. Mind you, we are seeing a lot more better known actors popping up in these horror flicks and this helps lift production values.                  However, this film does drag its heels in places and offers little new in the kid-girl-possessed-by-demons story idea. Special effects are pretty cool though. A little scary, if white-rolled back eyeballs give you a chill, but a long way off the quality storytelling we enjoyed recently inConjuring 2andCrimson Peak. Maybe a good one for Halloween. This is still a good thing because what is your teenage-hood if you can't go to the cinema with your friends and have a good scream?Film BlurbSet almost fifty years prior to the first film, in 1967 in Los Angeles, a widowed mother and family fake séance as part of a scam for a living. However, when the family discovers a Ouija gameboard, young Doris attempts to contact her deceased father, but through the game's seeing eye, sees a dark figure and is suddenly possessed by a malevolent spirit, which leads her family to believe that her so-called "friends" are trying to get through from the underworld and claim her as their own. Desperate for Doris's normality to return, the family must confront the Ouija and play the game for real, if their life is to ever be the same again.Jack Reacher: Never Go Back✪✪✪Opened October 20I didn't love the first Jack Reacher. I found the story rather cliche and predictable. However, this one did look a lot better in the trailer. I know everyone doesn't love Tom Cruise, but I enjoy his big blockbuster films. The Reacher films are based on the very popular books by Lee Child (he always plays a cameo in the films.). There has been a little noise on the fact that loner, highly decorated ex-army man Jack Reacher is actually blonde and tall in the books; pretty much the opposite physically of Tom Cruise. This is not an unenjoyable film and fans of the well-choreographed fight, male-adventure genre are well catered for. The rest of us, who would like a modicum of reality and something less predictable, will feel a tad unimpressed. Nice to see a kick-ass woman role but disappointing to see ratherchauvinistic sentiments portrayed by Reacher as he keeps looking stunned at his partner-on-the-run Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) every time she kicks butt.I hope this is the last one of these. I'm not a Jack Reacher fan and the films don't encourage me to read the books either, although my books often rank right next to Lee Childs in the Amazon sub-genres, so I have been curious. Not to Cruise: I'm very happy for you to play a role from one of my books.Film BlurbTom Cruise returns as Jack Reacher in this sequel based on Lee Child's bestselling novel Never Go Back, which finds the itinerant problem-solver accused of murder, and learning that he may have a child he has never met.Cafe Society✪✪✪Opened October 20I'm a huge Woody Allen fan. In fact, I think I've seen every one of his films dating back to the early seventies. He still hasitbut in smaller punches. Two of my favorite films in the last few years have beenBlue Jasmine(2013) andMidnight in Paris(2011). Both received Oscar wins in categories. So whenever there's a Woody Allen I'm there, even though the last few filmsIrrational ManandMagic in the Moonlightwere only so-so.Cafe Society is typical Woody. Jesse Eisenberg, who is often cast in his films as the hapless narrator, plays a Woody Allen type character perfectly. His Bobby Doorman's hopeless, fish-out-of-water character is amusing and enjoyable to follow. So too are all the other characters beautifully portrayed and their stories interwoven with finesse.Where this film really shines is in the aesthetics and rich 1930's world created by the perfect sets and fabulous costumes. So in saying all this, I should be rating this film a four out of five, at the least. However, I'm not. While it's not a fail by any means, what it lacks is Allen's usual acerbic wit and sharp plotting. Normally his films will run with numerous plot lines, which he nimbly gathers up at the end leaving us feeling as though we've enjoyed some magic. This time his lines are tangled and he only lands a smaller fish, while we watch the big one swim away. Close but not close enough.Film BlurbSet in the 1930s, Woody Allen's bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby's colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age.Stars Blake Lively, Corey Stoll, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen StewartI hope you are enjoying my new website.  You can subscribe now and receive an alert whenever there is a new post. What's on at the movies Oct 13 2016?

Some good films this week. I'm preparing to launch my latest book The Troubles Keeper. I did have an expected release date of the 14th October. However I've pushed that back another week because I'm still going through final edits. This book has received such amazing reviews on Good Reads that I want the final product to be as polished as possible.  So far it has over 65 ratings with a score of 4.35 out of 5. So I'm thrilled and very proud of this novel. Here's a link toÅ·±¦ÓéÀÖ.com/book/show/32570256-the-troubles-keeperDo you love competitions and prizes?Well, I'm going to be running regular comps from now on at my beautiful new website. On offer this month are3 packs of eBook and Audibleof my best sellerDEADLY MESSENGERS.So just click through here for a chance to win:Inferno✪✪✪½OpenedOctober 13I read Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. Let me rephrase that. Like most readers of these books, I inhaled them. Nothing was important enough to interrupt until you'd finished. The first two films in the trilogy of the same name (2006 & 2009), directed by Ron Howard, who also directed this one, were a bit of a letdown. However, because the suspense is based on the character's solving a puzzle mystery it was hard to tell if knowing the outcome dampened the enjoyment of the film. This book I hadn't read. The word in reading circles was that it wasn't great, and so I didn't seek it out. I found this film much more entertaining than its predecessors. But I'm not sure if its because I didn't know where they were going. Although I have read a few reviews since, which have also said it was the best of the trilogy. All actors are solid and the Italian and various international settings are just glorious. If you've been to Italy, you will no doubt lean to your fellow film goer (hopefully, you know them) and whisper, "I've been there."Great action film with just a couple of slow, unnecessary scenes that most likely appear to remain a little truer to the novel. Note: Tom Hanks has been very busy this year with three releases so far (Sully, Hologram for a King).Film BlurbTom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in director Ron Howard and screenwriter David Koepp's adaptation of author Dan Brown's bestselling novel Inferno, which finds Langdon using Dante's The Divine Comedy as a tool in the race to prevent a devastating global pandemic. ~ Jason Buchanan, RoviDeepwater Horizon✪✪✪✪Opened October 6Directed by Peter Berg (Battleship, Friday Night Lights, Hancock) who also directed Mark Wahlberg in Lone Survivor is becoming well known for his action films. He even makes a cameo in the opening scenes.Wow! When the sh*&^%$ hits the fan on an oil rig, it doesn't just hit, it cascades into something hugely horrific. Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean. On April 21, 2010 they experienced a blowout, which is basically a build up of pressure in the pipes they are drilling down through. The subsequent, possibly avoidable explosion killed 11 crewmen. The fireball was visible 64km away. These type of fires, as we have seen in Kuwait, are near impossible to extinguish. The Horizon sank and the well gushed oil until it was capped on the 15th July, months later. It became the largest oil spill in US waters. This is a riveting action drama led capably by everyman actor Mark Wahlberg. He really can play most parts so well. Kurt Russell is the rig manager and he's also convincing. I love that he's back in the mix with films. He's been a favorite of mine since childhood. John Malkovich as the company representative who cares more about the money than listening to engineers is compelling too.A fascinating, terrifying film made all the more frightening as it is based on real events. I've learned that when you land on an oil rig do check if they've done adequate pressure testing. If not, get off immediately.Film BlurbOn April 20th, 2010, one of the world's largest man-made disasters occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), this story honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone's lives forever.Masterminds(not reviewed)Opened October 13I didn't attend the preview of this one, but I'm sure you can decide from the trailer if it's for you.Film BlurbIn this action comedy based on true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people's money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime.
