My Dirty-Minded Debut
Tuesday was the culmination of a lot of hard work.Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationshipsdebuted and is
It’s been one heck of a ride–with the ups and downs that you’d expect from your average roller coaster–but I wouldn’t change a thing. How could I? I’ve loved every photo that friends and family have sent me this week, showing DIRTY MINDS out on New Arrivals tables, sitting on bookstore shelves and arriving on doorsteps.
I think it’s also important to mention that I didn’t undertake this project alone. I was helped along by friends, family and a lot of brilliant neuroscientists. To incredible editors and writers who have offered me their honest opinions. And readers like you who have cheered me on the whole way.
So while I revel in this moment, the debut that takes me from wannabe to author, I want to say thank you–to all of you. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Let's talk dirty.

But I've gotten a lot of questions about the book via Twitter and by email. So in honor of the release, I'm going to host a #bookchat on Twitter on 1/3/12 at 3:00pm EST. And I answer any and all questions you may have about love, sex and the brain--as well as give away one book to a lucky Tweeter. Won't you join us?

I'm getting overwhelmed!
I am so happy to share that Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships has received two more great reviews.
The January 2012 issue of Scientific American puts it on its list of recommended reading. Reviewer Kate Wong says, "In exploring such topics as monogamy, the parent-child bond, pheromones, and male and female responses to pornography, Sukel reveals just how complex and mysterious our brains really are."
I also received a nod from one of the bravest women I know: Christine Gilbert, author of the popular digital nomad blog, In her review of DIRTY MINDS called she says, "Kayt is honest and funny as I expected, but the science is what surprised me the most." She also said that she loved the book. Can't beat a recommendation like that!

The orgasm heard 'round the world...
...or something like that.
has been in the news this week. Here's the skinny:
fMRI orgasms, including my own contribution to this line of research, ended up in the . How 'bout that?
What does DIRTY MINDS and Katherine Heigl have in common? They are both featured in the January 2012 issue of ELLE magazine. Out on newsstands now, the DIRTY MINDS review appears on page 107--and Ben Dickinson, book editor extraordinaire, says DIRTY MINDS "fairly bristles with causes to reflect on our erotic complexity."
And, of course, there are 48 hours left to win a signed advance copy of the book. Just head on over to the to enter.

Another positive review
In it, she says:
The book remains lighthearted and entertaining throughout, with some truly excellent passages of top science writing (the neurobiology of the voles is a particularly great section). Kayt weaves the narrative of science with her own relationship and parenting experiences, but never pretends to give advice or say we’ve found the answers. Instead, she learns along with the reader, making the experience that much more engaging, like you're learning things from a friend who just happens to gossip about all the really FUN scientific studies. On the whole the book is entertaining, informative and nuanced.
Not too shabby!

Publishers Weekly likes DIRTY MINDS!
I work up this morning to a Google Alert--
I was thrilled to find that they reviewed the book at all--but I'll be floating for some time after seeing such a great view. I'm especially partial to the line, "Sukel leaves no stone unturned as she delves into the complex, cerebral world of relationships."
Thanks, PW!

DIRTY MINDS gets a mention on the Guardian and Huffington Post
As part of my research DIRTY MINDS, I volunteered to take part in an orgasm study. Yes, I "self-stimulated to orgasm" as a brain scanner measured blood flow in my brain. That research was highlighted at this year's Society for Neuroscience conference--and I wrote about the experience for the Guardian's Notes and Theories blog: .
That post was then picked up by the Huffington Post--at this moment, it's one of the lead stories on the AOL homepage. But you can view it here:
Orgasm news travels fast, I guess!
