Life Outside the Box: On Successful Entrepreneurs
Having often lived outside the box, today I have the pleasure of welcoming , author of , which is a must-read for those with creative passions, and the desire to turn their talents into a profitable business and lifestyle. Marilyn is an expert interviewer witha keen talent for interviewing successful entrepreneurs and fascinating people. Fortunately for us, she’s put their stories into a new book. And her own story is as interesting and inspirational as any of her interview subjects.
Life Outside the Box features stories of the creative, successful entrepreneurs, those who have artistic passions they’ve channeled into profitable business, including art, fashion, perfume, shoes, lingerie, acting, publishing, and charities. They’ve overcome many challenges and hardships along the way, including disabilities, illness, and poverty. Life Outside the Box is one of the most inspiring books for creative entrepreneurs I’ve read lately.
I was initially attracted to Life Outside the Box because it included in interview with Geir Ness, whom I met in 1995 when he was launching his perfume Laila at Nordstrom, and I was debuting my first book, Fabulous Fragrances. We often appeared at the same Nordstrom storeswhile promoting our products. I’d always admired his gumption and applauded his success, so I was pleased to see his inclusion in Life Outside the Box.
Marilyn Wilson includes ten interviews of successful entrepreneurs in the book. Besides Geir Ness, she also sat down with Ruthie Davis, who turned a passion for shoes into a career and earned the 2014 AAFA Footwear Designer of the Year award.
You’ll also meet Katherine Soucie, Patricia Fieldwalker, Pamela Masik, Shane Koyczan, Lisa-Marie Mazzucco, Caroline MacGillivray, William Orlowski, and Julie Salisbury, each of whom has an inspiring saga.
In this interview today, Marilyn also offers insights into her own process for writing, publishing, and marketing. Very honored to have her with us today, and here’s the interview:
Your career as a writer began after your children were grown. What unique challenges did this bring?
I walked away from my chosen career counseling in my mid-twenties and didn’t begin writing until over two decades later. It all started when I answered a Craigslist ad. When that magazine folded a short time later, no one was interested in someone my age, especially as I didn’t have serious credentials behind me. I had to create my own opportunity. I went back to Craigslist and put in an ad. This led me to someone wanting to launch a magazine and that connection opened the door for everything that has happened since.
Why do you write?
I passionately love interviewing and the only way I can keep that happen is by writing. I do enjoy writing, but the driving force is continuing to have that opportunity to sit with someone new and to listen to their story. It is a privilege that has changed my life.
Tell us about Life Outside the Box’s cover.
I chose to work with a graphic artist who had done work for me when I co-owned a fashion magazine. It was a real challenge for him to create something he was proud of while trying to satisfy my requests and the publishing company’s needs. In the end, the color scheme is one I requested. It called me. The ten unique silhouettes incorporated are meant to reflect the ten unique individuals featured.
What is the hardest thing about publishing?
First, finishing the book and then marketing in a sea of over eight million titles are hands down the biggest challenges. Outside of those, I think the hardest challenge for me was the editing process. I worked with a great editor, but her job was to push the book to be the best it could be. Those hard written words were my baby and I had already dealt with feedback from the individuals I had written about. We had a few areas we disagreed on and had to find a compromise that worked for both of us.
What do you do to get book reviews?
I was fortunate that I ran a local magazine up until 2012, so had a lot of connections to local media, especially bloggers. My first reviews came from seeing who was interested in my media circle and getting a book in their hands. My publisher also helped garner articles and reviews from other sources. I have run a Starbucks gift card contest for people who reviewed at an online e-tail site and signed up for a Virtual Book Tour through iRead Book Tours.
In your book, you ask everyone their definition of successful entrepreneurs. Do you have a favorite?
I love William Orlowski’s response as it is utterly simple. “There is no secret to success. Just do and be brave! That says it all for me. No worries, just get up and do something every day that makes your heart sing.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your audience and others who want to become successful entrepreneurs?
It is NEVER too late to pursue your dreams! Be brave! I often share the bicycle story. When I started riding a bicycle a year ago and had to go through narrow spaces such as between a couple posts, I panicked and almost veered into one every time. Then one day my husband told me to focus on a point way ahead. Problem solved. I sailed through calmly. As we get older, we tend to think short term and all we see are the roadblocks. Look ahead to the future aim your sights far down the road let this future unfold.

Here’s a treat for those ofyou who want to jumpstart your summer reading–anytime of year. Anita Hughesis aprolific author who writes stylish contemporary fiction. Her latest book is , a love story set in the south of France. (And I adore her husband for bringing the wine and cheese!)
Here’s the set-up for French Coast, another delightfulbook in this blogseries of books set in France:
From the author ofMonarch Beachcomes a beautiful story of loyalty and love in the luxurious city of Cannes in the South of France. Serena, a young features editor atVogue, is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is asked to spend a month in France interviewing the infamous editor-in-chief ofFrench Vogue. Upon arrival, she learns a devastating secret about her family which causes her faith in her parents and boyfriend to crumble. The wonderful backdrop of the Cote D’Azur inFrench Coastis the foundation of the beautiful imagery, delectable food, and high fashion in this stunning story.
Author Interview
Anita and I visited, and I had a few questions for her to share with you, so here goes
What inspired you to write FRENCH COAST?

What is your writing process?
Like many writers, I find if I write first thing in the morning I can get the words down easily. I try to write 1,000 words a day and I don’t move forward until I am completely happy with them. One thing I do that is a little different, is I sit in the dark at night and think up exactly what I’m going to write the next day. I usually do this for at least an hour and it works very well to get me prepared for the next morning’s writing.
What is your next book?
I am thrilled that I have two books coming out this year. My next book, called ROME IN LOVE, will be released by St. Martin’s Press on August 4th. ROME IN LOVE is about a young actress who gets the Audrey Hepburn role in the remake of ROMAN HOLIDAY. While in Rome, she discovers the letters of Audrey Hepburn in her hotel suite, and they help her sort out problems in her own life. I love this book and I am very excited to share it with my readers.
Thank you for having me on your wonderful blog, Jan!
is a delicious, heartfelt novel of friendship, love, second chances, and fabulous clothes set on the shores of thesparkling azure waters of the French Riviera.

Here’s morephotos from our ²ɾ’s event…and the result of our debut there. And we both made ²ɾ’s top seller list for the week!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: Book Review
I’ve been a fan of Kristin Hannah’s contemporary work for a long time, so when the buzz began that her latest book, , would be a historical novelset in World War II, I waited with great anticipation. Books set in Paris? World War II fiction? Books by Kristin Hannah? That’s a recipe for a triple delightfor me.And I’m happy to report that in The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah proves she is at the top of her professional game.
The Nightingale is a story of two sisters who, on the surface, could not be more different. In the beginning, Viann is a doting, conservative young mother, while Isabelle is a rambunctious, spirited young girl several years her junior. They’ve both suffered from the loss of their mother and the abandonment of their father. But when the Nazis invade France, their lives, and their values, are never the same.
Hannah expertly maintains taut tension throughout the story, depicting changes those minuscule and momentous in the two sisters as the political noose of war is tightened beyond belief. The evolving war is observed through the eyes of the everyday the rations, the billeting, the children, the women.
Indeed, World War II France became a nation of women, children, and old men. Hannah weaves a heartbreaking story of those left behind to fight the war on the home front. The novel delves into the machinations that manifested in unfathomable choices that had to be made, and their often disastrous repercussions. The choices one had to make were often distinguishable only by the slimmest degree of heartbreak.
In The Nightingale, Hannah paints a portrait of sisters who, though their paths might differ, share an ultimately unbreakablebond. Her character development, intricate (and surprising) plotting, and descriptions quickly draw the reader into the story and never let go. The Nightingale is an expert tapestry of war and the resilience of the human spirit.
For books set in Paris, France, and World War II sagas, The Nightingale is indeed among the most psychologically riveting.
More from Kristin Hannah
If is your first Kristin Hannah book, I wholeheartedly recommend
as well, among other book on her backlist. Visit to see more novels.
This reader certainly hopes this is the beginning of Hannah’s continued work in this parallel genre, along with her contemporary novels. Five stars for an excellent historical novel!
Disclosure: I received a copy of this from St. Martin’s Press for review.

Historical Fiction Debut: The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki
History is rife with fascinating stories, and few writers tell historical novels better than New York TImes Bestselling author Allison Pataki. Her latest novel,,is an 1850s erasaga of Sisi, formally known as Empress Elisabeth ofthe Austro-Hungarian Empress, and the engagingwife of Emperor Franz Joseph. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Allison through our mutual love of historical fiction, and I’m pleased to share her story in ourinterview with you today.
The Accidental Empress is a captivatingstory set during a tumultuous period in the former Hapsburg Empire ofAustria-Hungary. As the daughter of former New York State Governor George E. Pataki, Allison’sfamily roots run deep in Hungary, and served as inspiration for her writing.
In addition to writing historical fiction, Allison isa regular contributor to The Huffington Post and FoxNews.com, and is a member of The Historical Novel Society. She graduated Cum Laude from Yale University with a major in English and spent several years writing for TV and online news outlets. Sheis also the co-founder of the nonprofit organization, ReConnect Hungary.
The Accidental Empress is a stunning masterpiece of imagination, enriched with lavish historical detail. Utterly riveting, amazingly insightful. A splendid saga sure to capture the heart. Jan Moran
Historical Fiction: Interview with Author Allison Pataki
Please tell us a little about your The Accidental Empress. Why is it a must-read?
Empress Elisabeth, or Sisi, was and continues to be a fascinating, complex, modern, beautiful, and tragic leading lady. She was Europe’s last great Empress, as it was her family that declared war and began World War I. She was known as the “most beautiful woman in the world, but it was her wit and intelligence and charisma that made her a legend in her own time. And yet, somehow, she has become a footnote in modern history. It is so interesting to me how many women—women who accomplished huge things—have slipped through the cracks of history with their stories going largely untold.
I want people to read the story of Sisi so that they can empathize with the great things she did and tried to do. So that they can be transported to the beautiful and romantic world of the imperial Habsburg Court, filled with Walt Disney-esque castles and grand ballrooms and violin waltzes. So that they can be drawn into the love triangle in which she found herself. So that they can empathize with the incredibly moving and relevant difficulties Sisi weathered, not only as a Habsburg empress, but as a wife, a mother, and an individual seeking her own purpose in a treacherous court and a shifting world. So that they can be inspired in their own lives to learn more about history in a fun, entertaining and accessible way.
What are some of your favorite locales, objects, or activities that a reader might find in your books?
There are so many! Since Sisi was the Empress of the Habsburg Court, she spent much of her time in the seat of imperial power, the capital city of Vienna. The Habsburgs were one of the world’s most powerful and wealthy ruling families, so they certainly lived in luxury. Their two primary palaces in Vienna were the Hofburg Palace, where the court spent winters, and the Schönbrunn Palace, where they summered. Vienna, to this day, feels so imperial and grand when you walk down its streets. Whether you’re sipping a Turkish coffee in a café off the Ringstrasse, or marveling at the pastry-like facades of the Opera House, Court Theater, or government buildings, you can’t help but sense that this is a city built to dazzle and rule an empire, and the world.
Another fun location was the Habsburg Alpine retreat in Upper Austria, at the mountain resort town of Bad Ischl. It just doesn’t get more beautiful than that! This is the place where Sisi and Franz Joseph first fell in love as young kids. They were not supposed to be together, and their ill-fated beginning has repercussions that ripple for the rest of their lives (and impact the entire empire). But as you stare at the snow-capped Alps and the clear mountain streams, you can see how the setting certainly added to the romance of it all.
And then, finally, I have to mention Hungary. Sisi very often felt like an outsider in Austria and at the Austrian court. She felt the most at home in Hungary. Hers was a lifelong love affair with the Hungarian people. She was a world-famous horseback rider and she loved to take off on her thoroughbred across the plains of Hungary. She loved to stroll atop Buda Hill and look out over Budapest and the Danube River and the green meadows that stretched all the way toward Russia. While Vienna is imposing and imperial and impressive, Budapest is whimsical and romantic and free-spirited, just like Sisi was.
Is there a question people don’t ask you, but should?
The question people should ask: Why are Sisi and the Habsburgs family not more “well-known here in the U.S.? Why should we care about them as Americans?
That’s really why I was so inspired and interested in writing this story; Sisi is a woman people should know. She presided over the golden era of the Habsburg Court, in an age that gave us advances in culture and the arts and architecture, as well as advances in science and politics. Her family gave us the castle that we all know of as “The Walt Disney Castle. Her family gave us the waltz and Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Klimt’s paintings. Sisi ruled at the time that a young Doctor named Sigmund Freud was just down the street in Vienna inventing the practice of psychoanalysis. And this reign of Sisi and Franz Joseph takes us right up to the doorstep of World War I. Her heir was the man who was assassinated (Archduke Franz Ferdinand), prompting her husband to declare war and setting off World War I, the greatest armed conflict the world had known to that point.
We’ve read about Anne Boleyn and the Tudors. We’ve read about Marie Antoinette at Versailles. We’ve read about the Medici in Italy and the Tsarinas in Russia, and yet, Sisi’s story is more compelling and complex than all of those, I believe.
I think people will really enjoy diving into the world of Sisi and the Habsburg Court.
Where did the idea come from for your book?
Years ago I was traveling through Austria and Hungary and the Czech Republic with my family. I kept seeing this beautiful image of this young woman. She had this quizzical smile, this rich chestnut hair curled in these elaborate hairdos. I saw her face at every gift shop, museum, even in restaurants and hotels.
I asked someone who she was and the response was that she was “Sisi, the most beloved Habsburg Empress. I heard just a bit about her epic and tragic life—about the legends that she grew her hair to the floor, that she was considered the most beautiful woman in the world, that every other foreign ruler at the time was in love with her. I sensed that she was a combination of Princess Diana and Marie Antoinette and Catherine the Great and so much more.
I read about how Sisi didn’t mean to seduce her sister’s fiancé the emperor, but did, at the age of 15. Just enough to whet my appetite! I went home and dug in, reading everything I could about Sisi’s story; what I found astounded me. Hers is a story of love triangles, love, lust, betrayal, and so much more. It’s an incredibly human story, told against the glittering backdrop of the Habsburg Court. In Sisi’s case, history is even juicier than any fiction I could have dreamed up. I was hooked—and I hope readers will be, as well.
Anything you would like to say to your readers?
For me as a writer of Historical Fiction, the inspiration and the story ideas obviously come from the historical record. But in the case of the two novels I’ve published so far, there has been a personal connection to the history of each. That is the key—that personal connection is what makes me so impassioned to tell that particular story.
So for my first novel, The Traitor’s Wife, the novel is the story of Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason. Peggy plotted with Benedict Arnold to turn West Point Fort over to the British during the American Revolution, and she very nearly succeeded. Had Peggy and Benedict Arnold achieved their treasonous purposes, they would have ended the war and the hope of American independence. For me, this story was close to home, quite literally, because I grew up across the river from West Point. As a child I played in Benedict and Peggy Arnold’s old yard. I knew the land and the history and I felt theirs was a story worthy of being told in a historical fiction novel.
And with Sisi, it was a similar process of finding the inspiration in what I already knew. I am of Hungarian-American descent. I am very involved in the Hungarian community in the U.S., and I co-founded the Hungarian birthright program called ‘ReConnect Hungary. I’ve traveled to Hungary with my family throughout the years, and I always came across the image of Sisi. I always wondered what her story was.
What was so interesting to me about Sisi was how the Hungarians—still to this day—venerate her and adore her. She is their Princess Diana, but on an even larger scale. Knowing what I knew about my family and that the Hungarians did not ever like their Habsburg rulers (they didn’t appreciate being a part of the Austrian Empire, the Hungarians always thought of themselves as distinct from their Habsburg emperors), I was stunned at the way the Hungarians still embrace Sisi, almost worship her.
I found out that Sisi and her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph, were the only Habsburgs that my Hungarian relatives ever loved. That was intriguing. Why Sisi, I asked? I was just captivated by these striking, smiling—and yet almost somehow sad—images of Sisi that I saw everywhere. She is beautiful. And then when I found out about her story I realized that her life was even more dramatic that anything I had imagined. In Sisi’s case, history is juicier than fiction. She makes for such a compelling leading lady in a novel!
Where do you dream of traveling?
So many places! I really want to go to Croatia…to Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian Coast. I’ve heard that is just a stunning region, full of medieval walled cities and seaside mountains. I also would love to tour the Loire River Valley in France and see the great old chateaux. I’d love to ski in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I’d love to see Bali. Oh, the list goes on

Ladies Literary Tea: Scent of Triumph Book Launch in San Diego
If you’re in Southern California, I’d like to extend an invitation to my neighbors here on the SoCal coast. The launch day of my book, Scent of Triumph, from St. Martin’s Press, will be held at the Westgate Hotel in San Diego at a special Ladies Literary Tea hosted by the Susan McBeth, founder of Adventures by the Book.
This will be a beautiful affair, and I can’t think of a more appropriate setting to launch the saga of French perfumer Danielle Bretancourt into the world. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll join me.
Seating is limited, so please register early to reserve your place. It includes afternoon tea in the Grand Lobby, as well as an autographed copy of Scent of Triumph.
Sign up here, at , and be sure to look at the other events Susan has planned, too. (I’d love to tag along on the Paris/Provence trip with author Susan Vreeland!)
Looking forward to seeing everyone there at the Ladies Literary Tea!
