Should I read "London" or "Sarum" to learn about the history of England? Both books seem to cover similar periods and locations. Recently read "New York" and loved the detailed history of the city and country. Looking for a similar learning experience about the history of England.

Fiona I loved both London and Sarum. It depends on which aspect of English history you feel drawn to. Both will give you an excellent sense of the place, anâ€¦m´Ç°ù±ðI loved both London and Sarum. It depends on which aspect of English history you feel drawn to. Both will give you an excellent sense of the place, and stories that unwind over time. I think I've read all of Rutherfurds to date. I enjoyed New York the least, I didn't not like it, it just didn't unroll the picture well enough for me. I didn't become as invested. But perhaps that's because I'm British. The stories in Sarum, London and The Forest are as different as the places themselves. If you are more likely to visit London, or feel a connection, start there. If you love cathedrals and the history of the country, then begin with Sarum. Either way, enjoy the journey! (less)

I can not believe the negative revievs. This is my thrird time reading London. Anyone remember the saying, poem, about the London Bells? I know after reading it three times I should remember.

I enjoy James Michener ("The Source" and "Poland" particularly), and had thought Rutherfurd would be similar. This is the first book of his I have read and I am wondering if "London" is indicative of his writing style. Should I try one more by him before striking him off my reading queue? If so, any recommendations on which one might redeem him for me?
