I think part of what makes Miller's male characters so tragic is that they are trying to fit into the expectations that American society puts on men, at least in the 40's and 50's. They have to be successful above all else (Death of a Salesman and, to an extent, A View from the Bridge have this theme as well). They have to make money and look successful. The expectation put on women is that they will keep the family healthy and intact, no matter what awful thing their husband is doing! Given their historical context, I think they say plenty about men and women without changing genders.(less)

The most obvious example is of course the fact that Chris is dating Larry's ex-girlfriend and Joe's support of their engagement reveals that they both have an 'acceptance' for Larry's death. Furthermore, Chris' constant need to 'move on' from Larry is greatly influenced by Joe's need to hide away the truth concerning his death which also drives Chris to vehemently support his father when allegations around his innocence pop up in the later half of the play. We can see what an impact Larry had on Chris' relationship with Joe in the last act as well...when the truth is revealed, Chris leaves and his relationship with Joe, which was almost entirely built upon the 'truth' around Larry's death, crumbles. Even at the very end, when Chris mourns for his connection with his father, there's a sense of the world righting itself as there can be no relationship with Joe and Chris in a world without Larry (who's past and guilt is finally laid to rest). I hope this helps answer your questions :)(less)
