In the initial shock they may for a time believe themselves to be dead but as time passes I wonder how many of them truly deep down believe it to be true? I think even Pam and David know that the people do not whole heartedly believe they are dead (and it would work against them if they did because like you said if they truly thought they were dead than they would have no need to fear bodily harm). But even if they begin to doubt their death accepting the idea of being dead would be easier than considering other possible alternatives. Leading them to believe they are dead gives them the seed of self-denial. They have enough doubt of their death that threats of harm are effective but can use the possibility that they are dead as an easier explanation for what is happening to them. (less)
Marcin Probably timer and auto-wakeup. But more interesting question is why 1800 years? No earlier nor later?
