Of Goodreaders who have read this work-- it is, admittedly, well-written as du Maurier is a notable writer. However--- looking at this novel from the remove of time-- Wouldn't you agree that much of what is written is... problematic?

The place was packed, he had to wedge himself tightly between two old men to be able to see it all. They hunched their bent shoulders, moving irritably, cursing that a boy should force his way amongst them. The atmosphere was thick with smoke and breath, and the pungent smell of dark-skinned people." (less)
