Can someone explain the story Not After Midnight? Why was the main character told not to visit the couple after midnight?

But this is one of the most oblique stories in the book. Clearly the author was transformed too -- into a drunken lover of young boys? A satyr? But de Maurier really doesn't tell us enough to be sure. I was less happy with this story.(less)
