Okay so I read the Exorcist and loved it. totally blown away by it. I bought Legion but I'm worried it might not be as good and ruin the exorcist for me. A little how the Matrix sequels ruined what I thought had been the best movie ever. Shall I go for it?

I found it interesting and compelling, but the word 'entertainment' never sprang to mind. Some of the cultural references were new to me, and I found myself googling the odd word or two, many of them turning out to be Yiddish, and whilst they're not essential to understanding the story, it's all part of absorbing the book and the author's intent. It's a good book, I can say with pleasure after reading it all, and would fit in nicely if you like Thomas Harris, perhaps. Horror? I'm not so sure... it has horrific elements, and it craves a supernatural milieu, but it didn't really terrify or scare me in any way.

I finished reading Blatty's novel "The Exorcist" and it truly messed me up! After letting it sink in for a while, I am convinced that it is one of the best novels ever written. I am contemplating buying this book "Legion" but am hesitant about it, since I am unsure what to expect. That being said, is it in the same vein of spiritual horror as the first one, or more a dialogue-driven drama?
Steve Parcell Legion is more about the evils of the world than the personal horror of The Exorcist. It is spiritual but I guess dialogue driven drama is there. Its very good though and almost on a par with the original. I loved both books but The Exorcist for me is not going to be beaten in a book or the superb movie.(less)

I didn't realize Legion was the second in The Exorcist's series. So do I need to read the first one before reading Legion? Or can I read Legion and then return and read The Exorcist?
Steve Parcell You can do it either way I guess but its probably best to read The Exorcist first as some of Legion may not be as relevant.

Do I need to read The Exorcist before Legion? I found this at Goodwill, and with the Corona Virus it is not possible for me to go to the library right now for it. So I'm hoping it can act as a stand alone.
Isaiah Brown I would for sure recommend reading The Exorcist first. Pretty essential background on all the characters included there.
