If you read A Song of Ice and Fire, you will throw your books across the room when your favorite characters are killed off. You will turn away in disgust at rape, child murder, incest, and mutilation. If you read Wheel of Time, you will slog through long chapters of unnecessary detail. Both original authors have not been able to finish their epic series, but Robert Jordan died and Brandon Sanderson finished it for him! If you can only read one, I would read the one that has been completed. Or go read Mistborn! Man, Sanderson knows how to finish a series. (less)

I loved the scope of ASOIAF, and while WoT seems to have that as well, I couldn't make it through WoT because of the 1) terrible character development and interactions and 2) Jordan's hackneyed idiosyncrasies (e.g. terrible metaphors and similes), which made the writing seem terrible to me. And I made it through at least four books, so it's not like I didn't try.

So in short, NO. I'd recommend some of Brandon Sanderson's series instead. Mistborn is a great world though again lacks some of the scope, or the Stormlight Archive is great so far.(less)

I always stopped by page 30 because I felt the level of detail was too much, and it was at a time when I didn;t have the time or commitment to read an 800 page book. On my final try, I just decided to keep going and read quite a bit the first night (I believe 81 pages, and I read the prologue twice), 9 months later, I had read all books.(less)
