Does anyone know what Josephine Tey is referring to when she talks about the 'boom'? It is so central to the story yet remains a mystery to me. Google has not been helpful at all. All I can guess is that it is some kind of gymnastics apparatus.

On a few occasions Miss Pym reflects on a relationship she'd had with an "Alan" in her early twenties. All we're told of him is that he had a prominent adam's apple, holey socks, and favored dusty snugs on dates. Did Tey ever clarify if the young Miss Pym's Alan was Alan Grant?
