Or yes, and - you do have to have a certain grasp of Proust's background and the structure of French society as it transformed from the 1880s to the 1920s.
The details you need are fairly well covered in the context of the book, but it does help to know who Gilberte and Albertine were, and who the Swanns and the Guermantes are before embarking.
Over the decade I'd spent with volumes 1 and 2, a lot of outside references and reading enhanced my understanding of the who, what, where and when of LOST TIME, so I was ready to "skip to the end". Would I recommend it?
Not unless your own life experience encompasses the passage of time the Proust presents so well.
But if you're a lifelong reader of 70 or so, now is the TIME to pick up TIME REGAINED and explore it for yourself.(less)
