Do I need to read all the former books from Les Rougon-Macquart series before reading Germinal?

Finished! I've tried and failed twice before; the key this time was reading on Kindle, with the in-language dictionary at your fingertip. It was much quicker to get definitions than with a paper book and Le Petit Larousse like I did before. I worry that my word retention is not as good this way. It seems like I had to look up the same word again much more than I used to. Has anybody else had this experience?
