Your question why Colonel Mang came to see Paul off at the airport has to do with the fact that Colonel Mang found out that he was wrong in the assumption of Paul Brenner's purpose in Vietnam.
The fact that Paul acquired a entrance vise at such a short notice was certainly a red flag. Colonel Mang, being North Vietnamese, was always on the lookout for infiltrators that would want to rekindle a war and regain territory for the South and indirectly the US. When he interviewed Paul, Paul lied about his purpose and about his previous job during the war. Colonel Mang was convinced that he was part of an underground group trying to get the "Mountain people" to undermine the current regime and start some kind of guerrilla war fare or set-up terrorist activities to do the same. When he tracked Paul's activities and found out about the "accident" and murders of the police officers, this was only a confirmation. Only after he finally had a change to talk with Tran Van Vihn did he find out the true purpose of Paul's mission. He came to the airport to set the record straight and apologies, although, of course, he would never say something like that. But he respected Paul for his position and wanted him to know that. At least that is my view. (less)
