It's a history of the timber and fishing industries in the 19th Century. In Finland, the natives were under Russian occupation. It made them resentful and stressed. They faced famine. An uncle settled near Astoria as a prosperous dairy farmer. After their parents are done in by the Russians the children left Finland for the US and found their way to the west coast and their uncle. Being a PNW, I love stories about our history that my great grandparents helped to create. The author's style is closest to Ken Follett's style--easy to follow throughout multiple time sequences. It tells the story of this family and the outcomes they created in the PNW. You can almost smell the salty sea or you can almost imagine a storm on the Columbia. Make a character map--the Finnish and Swedish names will be easier to follow. The Audible version divides the book into Parts 1-5. Each Part begins with a prologue. The author's prolog at the beginning explains each character's name--several were named after Finnish Mythology. I loved that the author did that.(less)
