Hi there. Towards the very end, one of the the musicians who is onstage with Ida rebuking her says to the audience, "She's the champion, ain't she folks? Talk about walking, this girl ain't started walking!" Could somebody please help me understand exactly what he means by this? Ida tells Vivaldo that both she and the audience knew what he meant, but I'm afraid I do not.

I've wanted to read James Baldwin for a long time and this was a book club read. It is a difficult read and I've had to put it down. I will finish it, at some point. Maybe I'll try another Baldwin book first. Has anyone else had a hard time with this book?

Has several patches of very good writing but never anything that serves the plot or character development. Our book group all felt depressed, then angry at having wasted our time reading it. I'm told Go tell it on the mountain is Baldwin's best book. (Wanted to read this but the other people in our book club had already,so we all read this. Big mistake!)(less)
