Well... I think nowadays we're supposed to apply situational ethics here, aren't we? To wit... :

If Steinbeck was a Liberal, we're supposed to excuse him by saying that"he was a man of his time", (like Woodrow Wilson belonging to the KKK, etc.).

But if he was a Conservative, then we're supposed to immediately write him off completely as being a racist sexist bigoted homophobe, etc.

Did I get that right? My PC-Ometer hasn't been calibrated recently so it may be a little rusty...

Depending on how fast they read and their vocabulary level, it can even be read in 3-4 hours, even, so I'd say a few days is more than enough.
But seriously, unless it's mandatory, I'd go for something better.(less)

This court case seems to shed some light on it:

"Steinbeck died in 1968, but his books consistently continue to sell around two million copies a year. When Oprah Winfrey picked his novel East of Eden for her book club in 2003, it jumped to second place on online book retailer Amazon's bestseller list, beaten only by the latest Harry Potter.

Under the law at the time they were written, many of Steinbeck's works would be still in the public domain. But the trend has been towards extending the period of copyright, leading to several high-profile conflicts between family members and rights holders."(less)

For these reasons, the novella and the aforementioned novel make a better learning segment than _Mice and Men_. Maybe teachers gravitate towards Lennie and George because _Mice_ splits the difference between full-length novel (_Grapes_) and the perceived abstraction of a novella (Kino and Juana). I admit, the original _Mice_ film is fantastic as well, but little in Hollywood history comes within spitting distance of Henry Fonda's turn in _Grapes_. Couple a page-to-screen unit focusing around _Grapes_ and segue into _Pearl_ by talking about themes of family unity and religious fundamentalism explored in both works(less)
