Meredith Almost ALL Greek myths have something violent and sexual in them. Oftentimes, it's rape, which is mentioned on and off throughout this book. It's not that I do not believe a mature teen couldn't or shouldn't read this, but rather, it should be noted that most Greek myths are...well, pretty awful. This retelling is pretty good, but it doesn't leave out the grisly details.(less)

As there are different versions of Phaedra's myth, I wanted to know if in Ariadne her love for Hippolytus is genuine or is it Aphrodite's doing?

Shima As much as I love Suzanna's reply, if you want the technical answer, no, the book doesn't really say anything to suggest it was Aphrodite's doing (Sheâ€¦m´Ç°ù±ðAs much as I love Suzanna's reply, if you want the technical answer, no, the book doesn't really say anything to suggest it was Aphrodite's doing (She isn't really a presence in this book at all). However, whether or not it was genuine is another question and probably up to the reader's interpretation.
Personally, I saw it more as Phaedra's need for rebellion against the confines of her life, and her unconscious revenge against Theseus, even to the point of self-destruction. She didn't necessarily love Hippolytus, she loved the idea of the pure innocent love she was denied, and perhaps even more than that, she loved the idea of irrecoverably disrupting her life.(less)
