He was so obsessed he risked going to Japan even when there was a war going on there. He didn't travel to japan for his town. He did it for himself because he was infatuated with a woman he didn't know. Those words she wrote for him to return or else she will die put a spell on him. In the process killed an innocent boy and also hurt his devoted wife Helene but making her question her worth. (less)
