#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

Belle clapped her hands together. How delightful! Dunford had just come into an unexpected inheritance. She rather hoped it was something good. One of her friends had just unwillingly inherited thirty-seven cats.

This novel started out as the perfect lazy night in. It was thoroughly entertaining and Julia Quinn has once again managed to include a few subtle barbs at her own profession of romance novel writing.

“How about this. La, sir, but you should not call me sweetheart.
“It’s a start, but if you happen to be holding a fan, I strongly urge you to poke it into the bounder’s eye as well.

Dunford was inclined to agree with her, considering how badly he wanted to drag her back to his town house, haul her up the stairs, and have his wicked way with her. But he remained silent, partly because he didn’t care to frighten her, and partly because he realised his thoughts were sounding like a bad novel and he didn’t want his words to do the same.

Henry (Henrietta) is a fantastic heroine for us to fall in love with. She’s spunky, she’s resourceful and she’s fairly independent. Her plans to stay that way lead to some fantastic, albeit childish, antics to convince her new guardian, Dunford, he would rather not have inherited Stannage Park. I found Henry very likable, her independent streak and determination to run Stannage Park on her own despite the resistance from the outer community to her being a female literally wearing the pants.

“Did you hear that? I managed to use ‘above all else. It’s a silly phrase, to be sure, but I think I am finally beginning to sound like a debutante.

Dunford makes for a pretty great hero. He’s ever so dreamy, because although he’s been around the block a few times, he has a heart of gold underneath that roguish bachelor exterior. He’s also pretty determined that Henry is not going to force him out of his inherited home. Dunford has some fantastically sweet moments as he brings Henry out of her shell. While this novel definitely has a major My Fair Lady theme, it doesn’t feel quite so patronising in Minx. Dunford doesn’t dress her up in new clothes to prove he can polish the commoner. Dunford genuinely wants her to live a fuller life, to overcome her social anxieties and experience more opportunities that her previous guardian neglected.

“Hush up, minx. You’re a funny one, but you’re certainly more likeable than unlikeable.

Obviously they fall in love but can’t admit it. As soon as Dunford sees her he can’t help but want to snog her senseless and then plough her. Henry swoons as soon as Dunford unleashes his smile on her, but she’s not sure he really returns her affections.
…those grins of his were so devastatingly effective, she was convinced she could probably feel the force of one through a brick wall.
It’s all very sweet and the secondary characters like Belle, John and Emma are a lot of fun and great mentors to Henry.

This book was probably going to get four stars from me. Then I got to “the complication. I don’t want to go in to a whole lot of detail, but I do want to say this:

Rape is NEVER okay.
Physically intimidating someone is NEVER okay.
Playing mind fuckery with someone is NEVER okay.
Psychically and verbally abusing someone is NEVER okay.
Threatening that you will “have your wedding night regardless of your wife’s feelings on the matter is NEVER okay.

Telling your future wife she “doesn’t want to see you angry isn’t a sign of your sexy, manly appeal. It’s a sign to walk away because they don’t have anger management classes in the Victorian era.

If your wife says no, she says no. You don’t keep having a grope until she eventually “begs for it. She wasn’t saying “mmm no dear, I’d really rather read the paper tonight. SHE WAS INTIMIDATED BY YOU. When someone looks at you with fear in their eyes, you stop whatever the hell you are currently doing. You don’t keep doing it til they come around to your way of thinking.

“That’s alright, he murmured, cupping her breast with his hand. “Your lying mouth is not the part of you that most interests me.
“Stop! She pushed against his chest, but his arms were closed around her like a vise. “You can’t do this!
One corner of his mouth tilted up in a mockery of a smile. “Can’t I?
“You are not my husband, she said, her voice shaking with fury as she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. “You have no rights over my person.

.
I was disgusted and I felt physically ill. Due to misunderstandings both intentional and unintentional on both sides, they treat each other horribly and fuck everything up. Sure, they end “happily ever after, if you can call it that, but I felt absolutely no sense of happiness at the end. That two people who supposedly love each other could do such horrid things and think such horrid things about each other at the first sign of trouble does no bode well for the rest of their marriage.

I in no way approve of Henry’s actions either. She did some stupid things and caused half of the situation that happened. But Dunford is older and supposedly wiser and his reactions were far worse.

I could in no way enjoy the resolution and I felt pretty disgusted with Quinn as an author for what her characters did under the guise of love and misunderstandings.

Overall: 3.5 stars rounded to a full ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for breaking my heart at the end
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥
Humor: Yes! Plenty of humor, banter, and silliness
Perspective: Third person from both hero and heroine’s perspectives

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from )

Should I read in order?
Ideally you could because the heroes and heroines from books 1 and 2 are in this story, but overall I think it’s okay to pick up on it’s own. There isn’t strong character development in the prior books for this hero and heroine.

Basic plot:
Henrietta has been taking care of Stannage Park for years. Now that her guardian is dead, she’s worried her new guardian will come make changes or make her leave, marry her off...

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency time period (1816)
- Country and London setting most of the book takes place at the country home/farming area the hero inherits but there is some time spent in the London social whirl
- Guardian/ward trope
- Oh no, one bed
- Touch of ugly ducking feel heroine runs wild around the estate, wearing pants, going by the name “Henry but she becomes society’s diamond after some London shopping
- Medium steam (3 full scenes and lots of kisses)
- A bit of enemies to lovers feel in the beginning though it’s more playful banter/pranks then they morph into a friends to lovers feel
- Hero loves first
- You’ll have to be okay with a hero that is possessive, jealous, and a bit controlling

Ages:
- Heroine is 20, hero is 29

My thoughts:
Gosh, this book really made me feel all the emotions! I laughed, I was bored, I fell in love, I was annoyed, I was irritated with the characters, my heart broke for the characters.

Before I got to the ending drama, I was setting around 3.5 stars, but the ending just wrecked me. It just wrecked me in the best way. Even though all of it is all rather hair pullingly frustrating I just ATE IT UP. The angst. The heartbreak. The pain. I was utterly gripped in their drama and emotions. And I just had to rate it 5 stars for that. I never feel that anymore and it’s what I adore in romance. Is it messed up? Probably. Hurt me. Make me cry. Abuse me and I’ll love you.

Henry is our heroine. And I did really like her. She was a bit irritating to me in the beginning, pushing her pranks a bit far. But my heart really broke for her. Orphaned at an early age, she has had the run of Stannage Park for a number of years. Everyone looks to her for advice and she keeps everything running smoothly. She runs around in pants and it’s repeatedly mentioned she “doesn’t know how to be a girl. She has some thoughts of low self esteem surrounding this and this does come up repeatedly as an issue with the hero, so I think many will have a hard time with that. I think the resolution could have been a little more focused on her loving herself for herself and not feeling like she has to change at all. She’s very worried about displeasing him and it’s heartbreaking. She tends to curb her behavior to make sure it pleases him and I feel like she’s ready to lose herself, her individuality, to his whims, which he can be oblivious to how this could hurt her in the long term.

Dunford is...well I loved him and hated him. He’s not going to be a palatable hero to everyone. He’s possessive, he’s jealous, and he does come off as controlling. But he also said and did romantic things to me, his thoughts, his playfulness with her I loved. You get a decent amount of time in Dunfords head and I think that helps me forgive his actions more than I would otherwise.

The ending! I’ll admit I thought the ending drama was completely absurd. The fact that the heroine decided she loved him too much so she couldn’t tell him the truth, but she could do something that would drive him away from her, it was just absurd. Absurd! And I was really annoyed with the going ons and their reasoning but their FEELINGS. Their heartbreak just gutted me. I was wrecked in the best way and their make up is all the sweeter for what they’ve gone through.

I do think this book was a bit long and could have been cut a bit.

A few other random thoughts about this series I love that the titles actually have something to do with the stories. The phrases are actually used in the stories and it makes the titles that much more special.

Minx was my favorite of the series and my favorite Julia Quinn book I’ve read so far. Also the first I’ve rated 5 stars. Even though I had some major issues with it, I would reread it.

I seriously, seriously enjoyed this book.
Quite simply, I love it!
Minx was funny, sweet and romantic, the characters were so descriptively written and well developed.
A true romance book with the happy ending.
I highly recommend this book,as well as the rest of J. Quinn's work.

Cons
Miscommunication issues = Last quarter of the book spiraling down, down, down
Concept of and behavior towards a mistress = Cringeworthy
Heroine when thinking the guy is cheating on her chastises herself for being unworthy, too manly, and not good enough for him and never once putting the fault on him = Weakkkkkk

Pros
Plot = Was pretty damn cute and funny at times
Other Characters = Good family and friends support system
 Ending = Cute epilogue

Final Thoughts
It started out well, but ughhhh that last quarter though. Both the characters became so unlikable and just plain irritating. 2 stars because I was liking it, until the last section of the book ruined it.

Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers below)
Is there a happy/satisfying ending?
Love triangle? Cheating? Angst level?
Tears-worthy?
Humor?
What age level would be appropriate?

I loved Dunford since the first book, and I was waiting for his book to read.
I really enjoyed his love story with Henry (Henrietta). She was very different from Emma and Belle, but I liked her boyish character.
One tiny negative thing is that in the end I would prefered them to realize the truth earlier, because the misunderstanding went a bit too long.

The first 80% of the book was glorious. We had a sweet, funny romance between 20-year-old Henry and her new guardian, Dunford, who's just inherited the estate she looks after. Her attempts to run him off are genuinely hilarious, and the dialogue is incredibly witty. THIS was what I read historical romances for.

But then at 80% the goddamned drama began. First, the hero paid a visit to his old mistress just before the wedding to cast her off. This by itself I could have handled; I would never tolerate a hero meeting an ex-girlfriend like this in a contemporary, but I can make some allowances in my historicals. The OW pulls him into a kiss. Infuriating, but he didn't initiate it, so I was forcing myself to give him the benefit of the doubt.

But then... he gives her a 'brotherly kiss on the lips' during their meeting. NO. NO. A hundred times no. I've a brother myself, and I can assure you, he does not kiss me on the lips and it wouldn't feel 'brotherly' if he did. Would he take the heroine giving an OM a 'sisterly' kiss on the lips? Thought not. He never even tells the heroine he did this, and it torpedoed the rest of the book for me.

I am still SO ANNOYED because until that point, it was so good. I'm trying to pretend the last 20% doesn't exist.

You know how sometimes you watch a movie because you’re favorite actor is in it? That’s how I feel about this book. Dunford is my favorite Quinn hero - based on his role in all three books of the Splendid series and his cameo in How to Marry a Marquis - but Minx is not my favorite Quinn book. Don’t get me wrong, this book still earned my 5 star rating. It's quite entertaining and a recommended read especially for Quinn fans. I loved 90% of the book (see my dislike below for the other 10%)

Because I want to end on a positive note, I will list my dislikes before my likes

Dislikes 1) In every romance book, there’s a hurdle each couple must get over before they live happily ever after. I didn’t particularly like the hurdle presented in the book. They both, in a way, already declared that they loved each other before he proposed but because of a misunderstanding on Henry’s part, they both had a miserable time before, during, and shortly after their wedding when that should’ve been the happiest time of their lives.

2) I didn’t feel like the misunderstanding they were presented was believable. It could have been easily avoided if Henry brought it up which seemed like something she would’ve done.

3) Dunford and Henry are such strong and fundamentally good people that what they did after that night Henry saw Dunford with his mistress were too out of character for them. Dunford is a morally good guy, and even if he was crazy in love, I couldn’t believe he was willing to sacrifice Henry’s and his own happiness just to make her “his or turn so ugly right around the time of their wedding. Also, Quinn wrote Henry to be strong willed and outspoken, therefore it seemed that she would’ve just confronted Dunford about her concerns.

Like 1) As always, I love Quinn’s secondary characters. Alex, Emma, John, Bell, and Ned. Especially the use of Ned to make Dunford jealous. Plus I liked the mention of Charles Wycombe, the hero in Brighter than the Sun.

2) There were a few very funny scenes when they were living at Stannage Park.

3) The dress shopping scene..swoon! So sweet!

4) The scene at the end when Henry finally confronts Dunford. It gave me goose bumps.

Bella'nın abisi Ned, çoklu yazarların olduğu Where is my Hero? kitabında yer almış.

The rating does not stem from poor writing. Unfortunately, I have marked five of her books as not interested. After reading this story with such a cruel, abusive, passive-aggressive, mocking, unworthy hero, I realized I'm not the reader for her books. This is not an example of the kind of romance books I wish to read.

Before I forget, let me say the Harper audio version read by Lucy Rayner is lacking. The female voices are good, but the male voices make the characters seem incredibly old, arrogant, and haughty.

As lacking as the hero is, the heroine is strong, intelligent, kind, quirky, loving awesome. She fills the first quarter of the book with humor and endears herself to the reader. In fact, the meet-cute is adorable.

Somewhere about 30%, I realized the hero was immature and egotistical. He lusts after the heroine constantly, realizing he only lusts for her, not wanting anything more than a shag or two, knowing she is innocent, though he still drags her into compromising positions that makes her uncomfortable.

I kept reading because I liked the storyline.

The H & h get to know each other more before going to London. The H gifts the h with clothing to ease her awkwardness on the trip. He makes arrangement for the h to stay with the family of his friend, which affords the h her first friendship.

Then, the big conflict of the story occurs. spoiler:

This book had the potential to be wonderful if not for the abusive tendencies of the hero toward the heroine.

The first 80% of this novel was excellent and just what I have come to expect from Julia Quinn's books.

However the last 20% or so had the heroine acting so out of character that I started to get slightly irritated and it has cause me to drop a star from my rating. Why the heroine, who the author has on numerous occasions demonstrated as being quite blunt and direct and having no fear of discussing topics that aren't strictly ladylike, suddenly had an about face and became the complete opposite I really don't know but it just struck me as wrong and really spoiled that portion of the book for me.

Still I enjoyed the majority of it and Julia Quinn is still one of my favourite regency romance authors.

I borrowed the audiobook through the library.

I'm either going to need a lot of booze to get through the female narrator doing male voices

or I need to DNF.

I'm sorry Lucy Rayner, just not enough vocal range for me. I'm gonna go with DNF because, based on my friends reviews, this is probably a really good book. Will try again.

Until next time.

A bunch of lively banters stitched together with a frustrating third act, Minx will be appreciated by Julia Quinn completionist there are glimpses of what's to come in this early work, individual elements that make reappearance in the much more thought-through series that is The Bridgerton. By no mean an essential read, but a curious insight into the author's growth on her craft.

It's evident in Minx Julia Quinn had discovered her prowess in writing witty, chemistry-filled exchange between the love interests, they had one in a ball, in a carriage, in a garden, in a lodging... in all Regency scenarios imaginable. But the story lacks a driving force pushing the narrative forward; so while it's all fun and charming, overall the characters lack nuance beyond their social status and initial setup (a serious guardian and his untamed ward). I was forewarned the third act conflict is horribly executed, and it indeed is. Its extremity is like switching from a watching a rom-com to a deranged reality show miscommunication galore. I found the last few chapters hilarious in its absurdity, but obvious that could not have been the intention.

Part of me kind of want to complete the series by picking up Book 2 (Already read Book 1. Yes, I'm reading out of order), even though I know it won't be Julia Quinn at her best... we shall see.

I enjoyed the first part of the book, but it died a painful death with a misunderstanding that the heroine refused to address. That was a really bad part of the book that could have been avoided with a little open communication and honesty. The narration by Lucy Rayner added nothing to this book.

Henrietta Barrett has found herself in charge of her guardian's estate for over six years. She has had free reign over the estate and has done a great job of management. She has never thought of life outside Cornwell and Henry was in for a big change when her guardian died, and the estate passes to a complete stranger. A very handsome and charming stranger. Well, she will just need to send him packing right back to London.

William Dunford is high to London's list of eligible bachelors. Although he has plenty of money, he has no title or estate. When word reaches him that her has inherited both, he is very curious to see his new holdings. What he finds is a well-run estate managed by a beautiful hoyden who wears men's breeches and is willing to so the grubbiest tasks. What she is resistant to is acting like a lady.

This book must be my favorite Quinn, I read it and reread it many times. I was such a tomboy as a kid and Henry felt like me when I read the book. Dunford is one of the funniest male characters in Quinn's novels. This story will always have a special place in my heart.

I don't remember how many times I read this book in my teens and early twenties but now that I reread it I find it quite cute, romantic and fun but as much as I love Henry I don't know why she didn't come and tell Dunford about his mistress... I'm sure he would have told her everything but that letter bit at the end is truly a nightmare.

The story is about a girl called Henrietta but goes by Henry, she is an orphan living in Cornwall with her guardians, until they both die and the new lord is to inherit the estate and her! She is an unusual girl for the time, totally tomboyish, always in breeches and runs the estate.

Dunford is the new lord and Hen's guardian, but he doesn't know it, as she tries her best to make him leave the estate they fall in love. Dunford rein down his feelings because Hen is very innocent and she had an unusual upbringing, so he decides to take her to London to his friends so she can learn to be a lady and maybe find a husband in the season.

Hen doesn't want another man... she wants Dunford but he insists on the season. When Henry is a success and men are all over her, he goes nuts and marries her within a month!

A jealous woman tries to break them apart and it almost destroys their wedding and marriage, but they work it by the end and have a little baby girl named Georgina, Little George!

Not only is JQ enormously funny, but her heroines are always tremendously likeable and this one is no exception. This book made me laugh a lot, but also made me cry and that's no small feat, believe me.
