But 10 years after the project was unexpectedly terminated, her colleagues are suffering horrifying deaths one-by-one, and she gets a terrifying phone call that confirms that she could be next.
is sci-fi deeply entrenched in physics and the possibilities of viewing events of the past - for research purposes, of course...
Hits: The science is lofty, but not written in a way that makes non-scientist's brains blank out and scramble. Each character appears to be equally deception. There are enough secrets to go around, and we aren't completely familiar enough with each character to know who's innocent and who's a maniacal supernatural serial killer. The diversity of the characters - Spanish, American, Russian, etc. I love it when a cast goes international. 馃榾
Misses: If I had to read about how beautiful and sexy and shapely the MC was, I was gonna gag (I actually think I did a few times). Trust me, we get it. She's pretty, all the men wanted to sleep with her. MOVE ON! And we definitely got robbed on the big reveal of the outcome of the project. Only 3 past events? Come on! There was SO much we could have seen! Finally, the ending. Um... less than satisfying.
Three stars, because it held my attention and I kept anticipating a huge dramatic ending that was only partially delivered (points for a slightly unexpected twist).

Juan Carlos Somoza 鈥� Zig Zag
Another brilliant idea not so brilliantly executed. It鈥檚 rare to come across such original ideas nowadays, especially in the genre of science fiction, which makes the disappointment twice as big to see it wasted in clich茅s and cheap tricks. I guess what bothered me most was the fact that Somoza objectified his own heroin. And although the objectification makes sense -quite cleverly, one might say- in the end, the uneasiness remains, highlighted by the lack of a redemptive character development. Another thing that spoiled the fun for me was the way the author served his characters on a plate. Starting with the heroin, he spends four pages describing every bit of detail, from how she looks and what she wears to how she interacts with other people and how they interact with her, forcing us to wave the joy of gradual discovery goodbye. A method he uses with all his characters from start to finish.
As for the plot, I鈥檝e grown sick of the trick of interrupting the story at crucial moments just to prolong the suspense. 鈥淟ook close as I am gonna make a big revelation now鈥� right after a 20-page chapter dedicated to the bad guy and how he takes his tea.鈥� I find this method manipulative of the reader鈥檚 emotions and downright irritating.
It鈥檚 a shame because, like I said, the idea is brilliant as is the way Somoza handles it. Even the way it ends, although a bit on the easy side, didn鈥檛 disappoint me in the least. I might be wrong, but I feel that if it was written some decades back, its literary value would be as big as its originality.

Un roman qui nous plonge dans une horreur assez terrible, alors qu'une entit茅 semble s'en prendre 脿 tous les physiciens qui 茅taient pr茅sents lors d'une exp茅rience fascinante ayant eu lieu 10 ans auparavant. Ils ont r茅ussi 脿 contempler le pass茅 en mettant en oeuvre la fameuse th茅orie des cordes et semblent avoir ramen茅 quelque chose. Le c么t茅 physique m'a beaucoup plu, ainsi que les implications que, th茅oriquement, 莽a peut avoir. As others have said, this book's concept of seeing into the past is so interesting that I just long for better treatment of it. For example, from the book:
"Let's suppose we ask the satellites to capture a sequence of the Nile delta. They do it, send it to us, and a computer processes it and obtains a series of maps of the pyramids. After streaming the beam of electrons through our synchrotron, we recover the recently formed particles, and then another computer reconstructs them and captures the new image. If we've used the right amount of energy, then we'll be able to see the same place, the Egyptian Pyramids, but, say, three thousand years earlier... with a little luck, for a few seconds, we'll be able to see a pyramid being built, or a pharaoh's burial ceremony."
And they do look into the past several times. But then... some scientists mishandle the discovery and unleash an evil entity and the project is shut down. I only wish this book was about the project and not some crazy explanation about how the entity came to be. And why it's killing everyone. Sigh.

J鈥檈ncha卯ne les bonnes surprises depuis le d茅but de l鈥檃nn茅e. Je d茅couvre Somoza avec La th茅orie des cordes et j鈥檈n suis folle. Un m茅lange de thriller, d鈥檋orreur et de Hard science et nous y voil脿, une merveille !
L鈥檃ction se situe dans un futur tr猫s proche et met en sc猫ne une 茅quipe de physiciens et autres savants victimes de leur d茅couverte. Je suis plus que friande du th猫me du temps et du pass茅, qui est ici trait茅 d鈥檜ne mani猫re qui est pour moi tout 脿 fait innovante. L鈥檃spect SF est un pr茅texte 脿 une intrigue originale et particuli猫rement tordue. La psychologie de chaque personnage est au premier plan, l鈥檃mpleur de leur d茅couverte ayant un impact encore non mesur茅 sur leur comportement.
Le m茅lange des genres est ici une vraie r茅ussite, tous les ingr茅dients concourent 脿 faire un roman captivant, haletant, instructif, profond.
Le sujet, le rythme, l鈥櫭ヽriture, le suspens, tout est men茅 avec une ma卯trise confondante. Le final est superbe, compl猫tement bluffant, et l鈥櫭﹑ilogue magnifique.

L鈥檃spect SF est un pr茅texte 脿 une intrigue originale et particuli猫rement tordue. La psychologie de chaque personnage est au premier plan, l鈥檃mpleur de leur d茅couverte ayant un impact encore non mesur茅 sur leur comportement.
Le m茅lange des genres est ici une vraie r茅ussite, tous les ingr茅dients concourent 脿 faire un roman captivant, haletant, instructif, profond.
Le sujet, le rythme, l鈥櫭ヽriture, le suspens, tout est men茅 avec une ma卯trise confondante. Le final est superbe, compl猫tement bluffant, et l鈥櫭﹑ilogue magnifique.

If you like Michael Crichton, you will like this book. I am learning quite a bit about String Theory so far. I'm having trouble putting it down too. The action moves quickly.
Wow! What an exciting book. The ending surprised me and I love that. I hate it when I figure it out before I get there. The science was fascinating and understandable. I had to stop and think about it at times, but it was not "over-your-head" kind of theoreticl physics.

Este libro es la mezcla entre el comienzo de una porno, una pel铆cula de terror y scifi y el resultado es tan desastroso como suena, porque al querer ser tantas cosas juntas, para m铆, no termino siendo ninguna.
El comienzo es largo y aburrido, en especial toda la etapa universitaria que se me hizo eterna, porque todo el tiempo te est谩n prometiendo este gran y oscuro secreto del que Elisa est谩 huyendo, pero llegas a la mitad del libro y todav铆a no estas donde lo 鈥渋nteresante鈥� sucede. Y cuando por fin sucede, te das cuenta que no era tan interesante como cre铆as.
Adem谩s, toda esa tensi贸n sexual con 鈥淓l鈥� era rid铆cula, por una parte el libro quer铆a que tuvieras miedo por los personajes y que sintieras la tensi贸n en el ambiente y por otro ten铆amos a todas las chicas supuestamente muertas de miedo pero poni茅ndose su mejor ropa porque iban a tener una cita con un "monstruo" y eso obviamente es caliente. Y yo s茅, que explican por qu茅 ellas hac铆an eso鈥�.pero de todos modos era rid铆culo de leer.
Las menciones a Dios pudieron haber sido omitidas, cada vez era como si quisiera tomar el tema pero luego lo dejaba flotando en el aire y era retomado en otro momento sin ninguna otra raz贸n que para abrir un debate que nunca tenia lugar.

Me fascin贸 desde la primera p谩gina. Combina perfectamente el g茅nero de terror con la ciencia ficci贸n, sabiendo adem谩s generar much铆simo suspense.
Probablemente lo que m谩s me sorprendi贸 es que el autor fuera espa帽ol. De no ser as铆, estoy convencido de que la habr铆an adaptado en Hollywood. Sin duda una de las mejores novelas que he le铆do.

As I read Somoza鈥檚 Zigzag, I had the feeling that what I鈥檓 currently writing right now (and thinking about it) fell in the similar vein though treading a wholly different concept. Soon, the pages raced on, not until I scratched my head at the ending.
Now, don鈥檛 get me wrong; it doesn鈥檛 mean that when my hands race at the pages in excitement I highly rate the book. Many books had done that to me, either the effect really out of excitement or only out of the sheer desperation to finish it. I had those mixed feelings as I read Zigzag on. Somoza鈥檚 writing (or translator, I read the English version) is exhilarating and the beginning is merely a front for what seems to be a promisingly speedy reading, and then, like its premise, it began to all get Greek to me.
I have prepared a synopsis below for those of you who are too lazy, or find the book too confusing, though please approach it with some caution. I might be wrong too.

I would鈥檝e prepared to give the novel a 4. The premise was interesting. Somoza churns out a novel that had elements from Dr. Moreau, Final Destination, and Groundhog Day. His writing is frenetic, edgy, atmospheric, dark and mood-enhancing. It is, as what the blurb from the mass market paperback said, not for the fainthearted. That is, until it all gets blown to pieces by the second portion of the novel in 2015.
I鈥檇 take it that I am not a physicist. I once dreamed of it when I was young but my mind was too poor, and my education too bad to even convince me getting the course. I may had been happier if I had all my resources and did become one, but granted that life on me took a different way around and made me embrace the arts more than the sciences convinced me that I would be equally as happy because by then, my realm is different from that.
And I say, without much fanfare, that the book only gave me confusion.
The premise was workable but it didn鈥檛 strike on me. One of the scenes in the book showing Carter鈥檚 confusion in all of this phenomena best exemplifies my frustration. It simply was out of reach. There was another novel that I read this year was All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, which also dealt with time but it worked out for me better than this

Greek review bellow the English one.
This is an interesting book, I guess thriller, terror, science fiction genre (and I rarely read this genres!). It held my attention with its intriguing plot, many twists and turns, some decent physics and science thrown in and some ethical dilemmas, although I believe that some parts were not too convincing and the book could be about 20% shorter than it is.
I bet this novel could be a good inspiration for a decent related movie.

ZigZag es una interesante novela de ciencia ficci贸n y terror.
Ciencia ficci贸n con ciencia porque la protagonista es una chica llamada Elisa que es profesora de f铆sica. Y adem谩s hay muchos otros f铆sicos de personajes, tambi茅n paleont贸logos, antrop贸logos. Y hasta aparece Stephen Hawking como personaje de la novela en cierto momento.
La trama se centra en uno de los supuestos grandes descubrimientos de la f铆sica te贸rica en el campo de la teor铆a de cuerdas, algo llamado la "Teor铆a de la Secuoya", descubierta por el f铆sico Blanes (esto es ficticio). Al tratar de comprenderse tal teor铆a en un laboratorio ubicado estrat茅gicamente en lo m谩s recondito del mundo se desarrollan una serie de acontecimientos los cuales llegan a generar lo que es el mayor temor de los personajes de la novela.
Lo que me ha gustado es que cualquier cosa por m谩s insignificante que sea llega a ser importante en la trama, por lo cual el lector atento se encuentra ante un buen libro donde todas las cosas convergen. El final me ha parecido bueno tambi茅n.
Lo que no me ha gustado es que se me ha hecho pesado y extenso, hasta el punto de pensar en abandonarlo, y tambi茅n por los cambios bruscos de escenarios.

Au d茅part, j'ai d茅vor茅 ce thriller scientifique concentr茅 autour de la physique quantique et de la Th茅orie des cordes dont je ne ma卯trise suffisamment pas le sujet pour tenter une impr茅cise d茅finition. Chose que je sais avec certitude, c'est qu'une poign茅e de scientifiques est engag茅e par un puissant conglom茅rat europ茅en pour pousser au maximum le potentiel de la Th茅orie en ouvrant les cordes du temps afin de pourvoir obtenir des images du pass茅. Tous seront install茅s sur une 卯le avec un acc茅l茅rateur de particules, des instruments de haut niveau technique et l'acc猫s direct 脿 une multitude de satellites gravitant autour de la terre dont on veut explorer le pass茅. Telle est la premi猫re moiti茅 de ce roman extr锚mement prometteur et fort int茅ressant. Malheureusement, au fil des exp茅riences de nos physiciens, pal茅ontologues et experts en religion, le r茅cit zigue zague (c'est le cas de le dire) vers l'impr茅cision et une multitude de questionnements. On dirait que seul l'auteur sait ce qui se passe au juste. Le lecteur que je suis se perd dans ce d茅lire quantique. Il est certes complexe de s'aventurer dans un tel projet. Le sujet d茅passe l'entendement et il est difficile pour l'imaginaire de l'锚tre humain normal de comprendre de quoi il en retourne au juste. L'int茅r锚t s'effrite au fur et 脿 mesure que les scientifiques se font sauvagement d茅capit茅s jusqu'脿 la toute derni猫re page qui d茅montre que Somoza ne savait pas comment terminer son histoire. Essai m茅ritoire. R茅sultat d茅cevant.

String theory of time is center stage - a team of physicists is trying to view the past by unraveling time strings. But their safety all unravels when one ambitious team member tries to unravel a RECENT time string, which is a no-no, as recent time is "unstable."
A menace fr. the past starts stalking the team members. Their project is abruptly halted and deep-sixed. (Even tho it has huge applications for the military - what better way to win a war than to visit past time, and so observe the enemy making war plans.)
But, the menace is not a creature from Biblical or other ancient time (as author initially misdirects us to think.) In fact, the culprit turns out to be a "slice" or "split" off the mildest, most unprepossessing, most sympathetic physicist of all (Victor - whom security head Carter, a mercenary, calls "Father" as in "Catholic priest.")
Reason: while doing unapproved solo research on the group topic, the ambitious scientist targeted a memory from his own teen years (which is recent time, in the context of all time.) In that event, Victor, a friend since childhood, stumbled on Ambitious Guy making out w. Victor's girlfriend.
By picking that moment from the past to revisit, ambitious guy accidentally splits off a fragment of Victor -- the jealous monster within the otherwise meek man -- who then hunts down the scientists, almost to the death of all.
To end the terror, surviving members of the original research team return to the remote island to reactivate, and permanently, close out the old experiment. Only two are spared: Elisa (heroine physicist who is beautiful but frigid) and macho Carter. The two intensely dislike each other.
On last page, the reader is left to ponder whether, after the pair's victory, they will be marooned for all time, just the 2 of them, on the small island, because of some scientific fluke (a time freeze?) triggered when they destroyed their enemy: who was the animalistic, non-thinking predator "slice" of angry teen-aged Victor.
Intriguing book. I didn't really understand all the science; nor which portions of the plot went beyond the actual science.

M谩s bien 3,5. Lectura muy amena, engancha. No obstante, tiene cosas muy buenas y otras no tanto, un poco desigual. El resumen de la combinaci贸n es:
- CiFi flojita: empieza aparentando ser dura, pero luego de repente es s煤per blanda... (por ejemplo, parece que estamos hablando en serio y entonces resulta que si pasas una se帽al de v铆deo en directo -隆porque s贸lo vale en directo, cuando est谩 fresca!- por un acelerador de part铆culas y le aplicas unos c谩lculos puedes sacar v铆deos de ese mismo sitio pero en el pasado... pero con redshift, porque la luz original del pasado ya est谩 muy lejos y el v铆deo te sale colorao... vaya coctelera de conceptos... 隆le falta mucho ron ah铆 dentro!)
- Horror/Terror bastante correcto, consigue sorprenderte y meterte el sustillo en el cuerpo cuando le apetece.
- Intriga, muy bien. Nunca pasaba lo que yo me tem铆a que iba a pasar a continuaci贸n.
- Estilo curioso. En general muy cuidado, aunque sin ser empalagoso, en otros momentos bastante informal y muy espa帽ol de Espa帽a... Digo curioso, no que est茅 mal. Bastante adecuado, pues, dir铆a.
- Ritmo muy bien a ratos. La parte universitaria del principio es un poco lenta, pero no est谩 del todo mal, es buena presentaci贸n de personajes. En otros sitios es perfecto.
- El discurso teol贸gico que aparece de vez en cuando no acaba de encajar. Si habl谩ramos de f铆sica m谩s en serio, podr铆amos plantearnos un debate acerca de qu茅 y por qu茅 es el mundo, pero aqu铆 no acaba de llegar a ning煤n sitio. Esto es un thriller, a fin de cuentas, no filosof铆a ni ciencia.
- Y tambi茅n aderezado con unos cuantos gui帽os er贸ticos por ah铆, para acabar de tocar todos los palos, que recuerdan un mont贸n a las producciones de cine medias / bajas americanas. Para p煤blico masculino heterosexual todos ellos, adem谩s. Supongo que le da una cierta vidilla, pero son un poco quiero y no puedo.
Recomendable en su conjunto, en cualquier caso. Entretenido.

- Y tambi茅n aderezado con unos cuantos gui帽os er贸ticos por ah铆, para acabar de tocar todos los palos, que recuerdan un mont贸n a las producciones de cine medias / bajas americanas. Para p煤blico masculino heterosexual todos ellos, adem谩s. Supongo que le da una cierta vidilla, pero son un poco quiero y no puedo.
Recomendable en su conjunto, en cualquier caso. Entretenido.

Bueno ya lo termin茅, la verdad es que me lo lei casi de un tiron y me ha gustado bastante, pero es un libro con trampa, y me explico:
Es obvio que la accion se desarrolla a partir de un evento de la mas pura ciencia ficcion (aunque muy creible y basada en teorias comprobables), pero la trama principal es de las mas puras Novelas de Horror, genero este que me gusta tanto como el CF (o mas quizas).
Puedo decir que quienes no les gusten las novelas de horror quizas no disfruten mucho de este libro, que no he dudado en ponerle 4 estrellas de 5, pero si les atraen ambos generos, seguro que lo devoraran.
