Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.
In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.
Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.
In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".
In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.
In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.
In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[
After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.
"The creative person is one who brings something from the unknown into the world of the known, who brings something from God into the world, who helps God to utter something--who becomes a hollow bamboo and allows God to flow through him. How can you become a hollow bamboo? If you are too full of the mind, you cannot become a hollow bamboo. And creativity is from the creator, creativity is not of you or from you. You disappear, then creativity is--when the creator takes possession of you." (p. 146)
I haven't read such a well written pile of shit since.. Well.. Never.
This might as well be top 5 worst works I have laid my eyes on.
Personally, I stay away from books that try to teach you about how you should approach a subject, or the ones that give you advice or pretend like they do, at least. I don't believe they could actually teach me the thing that they are preaching. I learn by personal experience and personal observations. I listen carefully to what others have to say about a situation, then when confronted with that situation, I try to handle it as best as I figure, in my own way.
But this? This must be the worst preacher ever. Or maybe it's a strategy to constantly repeat the same sentence in different forms. Maybe OSHO was trying to hypnotize me.
What do you know, it didn't work. I'm not impressed at all.
I can't understand what other people draw from it. How you can learn something from it. I don't see it. Or, maybe, as OSHO puts it, I'm simply not evolved enough for this..
Osho's every book is unique as a man himself. This book is for everyone (actually his all books are for everyone).
Creativity, life itself is a great creativity but it is spoiled by many things especially mind that is full thoughts. Our mind is made by society including family & they work well to kill the creativity of human being because everyone wants us to be like as they want. In this struggle we lose our identity as an individual. Our own "Self" is somewhat burried under so many things due to our social structure & education.
If you agree with me on the statement above then you must read this book to leave life full of creativity. If you dont want to be bored then must read this book. If you want to remove monotony in the life then must read this book. I am on just 90th page of this book & I have become disciple of OSHO.
One of the only books that actually gave me a new way of looking at things, a profound meaning, something that i was so not aware about... Can read this book a million times and still will discover new things everytime i read it. Strongly recommended to all.
Teachings of Osho are really profound and meaningful for those who can resonate the same.
This book was an intense read. I went through it slowly as it provoked thoughts that took time to grapple with. After having finished it I have to say there were some good points but much I disagreed with. Osho's assessment of creativity and human nature differ greatly from my perspective, and perhaps that was the most difficult thing to cope with while reading. I feel I was very honest and fair with a two -star review on this one.
Osho’s philosophy always hits home. By the time I’d finished reading this book, my view of creativity had changed completely.
This book pulls no punches when it forces you to understand what true creativity is: a fragrance of freedom that blends together both feeling and action into an awareness that translates into a uniquely individual creative expression. I was reminded that each and every one of us comes into this world with a specific destiny; the Divine has a task for us and, whether that task (in my case, writing my novels) is recognised by the collective is less important than whether I love what I do for the sake of doing it.
From now on, I’ll never wash the kitchen floor again…I’ll be painting an invisible picture with my mop! My enthusiasm for my chosen craft—one in which the odds *against* success are overwhelming—has been restored. And my creative forces have truly been unleashed with the simple wisdom contained in this volume.
There is a difference between action and activity. Action is spontaneous, activity is planned. Osho has made it clear what creativity actually means. This book is indeed a MUST HAVE in my library. I like what he tells about critics....
Critics are not creative.
If you are an Olympic runner, critics are someone who stands in crowd and throw stones at you while running.
Critics never participate.
The best way to know something is to participate in it, to be in it.
This book had been sitting on a shelf in my apartment for months before I picked it up (it belongs to my roommate). There was definitely a bit of serendipity in the timing of when I finally cracked it open, as I've been grappling with questions about meaning and purpose recently. Aside from Osho's distaste for Picasso, I loved the book. Almost every page had something on it that I wanted to pause and think about. It felt like Osho was speaking to me directly, answering my questions from the great beyond.
Osho always sheds a new light. "What will you do if you possess the whole world, but you don't possess yourself?"
"When ambition enters, creativity disappears- because an ambitious man cannot be creative, an ambitious man cannot love any activity for its own sake...and a creative person is always in the present."
I found a lot of great insight from this book. People in any form of creative industry would gain a lot from reading this. Some parts may hurt the ego to read, but it's for the best.
Osho is of course the best spiritual master so far, as far as modern world is concerned. we can get him because he is born in our time. this book revealed the very basic psychology behind suffering, treating it in a logical manner. ego. hod how it arises. if you want to know spirituality in a little more logical manner, intellectually, you can read it.
Inspiring, illuminating at some points. Partly giving a new perspective, and partly just confirming and explaining things you've already known or anticipated.
This is a very profound book and I've learnt many truths here, although Osho does tend to ramble on a bit (meaning, he could have said it in half the pages). Well worth working through though.
