Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also spelt Saratchandra) (Bengali: শরৎচন্দ্� চট্টোপাধ্যায�) was a legendary Bengali novelist from India. He was one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the early 20th century.
His childhood and youth were spent in dire poverty as his father, Motilal Chattopadhyay, was an idler and dreamer and gave little security to his five children. Saratchandra received very little formal education but inherited something valuable from his father—his imagination and love of literature.
He started writing in his early teens and two stories written then have survived—‘Korel� and ‘Kashinath�. Saratchandra came to maturity at a time when the national movement was gaining momentum together with an awakening of social consciousness.
Much of his writing bears the mark of the resultant turbulence of society. A prolific writer, he found the novel an apt medium for depicting this and, in his hands, it became a powerful weapon of social and political reform.
Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of thousands of readers not only in Bengal but all over India.

হয়ত� দেরি হয়ে গেছে বইটি পড়ত�, হয়ত� কো� কিছু� দেরিতে হয� না, সব� হয� একেবারেই পূর্বনির্ধারিত সময়ে। কে জানে! পড়া হয়েছে এটিই আসল।
অধিকাংশে� মত�, শরৎচন্দ্রে� শ্রেষ্� রচনা শ্রীকান্ত। আম� বল�, কে� শর� এর একটি লেখা পড়ত� চাইল�, পড়ু� শ্রীকান্ত।
� পর্বের সুবিশা� এই উপন্যাসে� চারট� পর্ব� আমার সমান ভালো লেগেছে, তা বল� না� তব� উপন্যাসে� যে বিষয়ট� আমাক� সবচেয়� মুগ্� করেছ�, তা হচ্ছ� একজন মানুষে� বেড়� ওঠ�, পরিবর্তন এব� তা� দেখা� চোখে� ধীরে ধীরে বদল। সে মানুষট� শ্রীকান্ত।

Srikanta is an awesome book, a less known gem from India. I came across this book by chance. I never saw this book mentioned amongst the top books from India. Maybe it's because it's an old book and people tend to forget old books. Easily my favourite book of this year. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading an Indian book.
The novel is mostly about the life of Srikanta and his childhood schoolmate, Rajlakshmi, who had a secret crush on him. As adults they become lovers. This book was informative as well as interesting for me as I got to know the every day lives of Hindus, especially Bengali Hindus - their beliefs, Gods, Goddesses, customs, religious rituals, way of life etc. Swami Bajrananda and Kamal Lata were interesting characters in the novel. The latter part of the book enlightened me on the goings on in an akhra, the lives of vaishnavis who live there, the routine and rituals followed there. Those parts were fantastic as I like to know about other religions.
I also got to know about the Hindu caste system and how it works. Unfortunately, there's discrimination faced by lower castes. Also, inter-caste marriages are forbidden. I am surprised why one's caste is such a deal breaker in Indian marriages even now. I feel it's irrelevant in the 21st century as people do vastly different kinds of jobs compared to the ancestors of their caste. Since I am an Indian Christian, I will talk a bit about the caste system among Indian Christians. So, in case you didn't know, there's caste system among Indian Christians too as a result of inculturation. Generally it's not given that much importance in everyday life among Indian Christians. People rarely talk about it. No one cares which caste one belongs to. People only talk, this person is a Catholic, that person is a Protestant or he/she is Orthodox. But at the time of an arranged marriage, strangely caste becomes an important thing for Indian Christian parents. I got to know from my parents that if some problem arises in a marriage, in laws blame the caste. If they are in the same caste, they keep quiet. I wasn't satisfied with the explanation though. Anyway, I am personally not fond of the caste system. Someday, I will marry my girlfriend from the Philippines. They don't have any caste system there. If I have children, I will make sure that they are casteless like their mother.
There are also some parts in the story about the pernicious dowry system and how it financially cripples the family of the bride. It's really sad that Indian parents give more importance to caste and dowry, while love is secondary. It's very common among Indian Christians as well except in the North Eastern states I heard. We need radical change in our society. Even good people accept giving and taking dowry as normal! For me, marriage should only be about two souls in love with each other. Dowry should be out of the question. I had resolved early in my life that I will never accept dowry. I don't need any dowry in the form of car, cash, gold, land etc. I don't need someone else's hard earned money for my own comfort. I can work for it myself. Indian parents should encourage their children to find their own life partners. At the same they should educate their children to not get involved in premarital sex which is unfortunately common among couples who had a love marriage.
The novel is not only about sad things. There are many happy moments as well and humour too. There are many adventures and events in the novel like stealing fishes at night, a scary visit to a place of cremation after midnight, a ship journey from Bengal to Burma, the description of casteless Burmese society, marriages of Indian Bengalis to Burmese women, the consequences of it, funny incidents with snakes, various family problems in the village of Gangamati and how they are solved etc. Fantastic novel overall.

Srikanta - though the name of the novel is on the male narattor but it should ideally be "Srikanta & his tryst with women'. Srikanta goes on to narrate only those parts of his life where he met different women & how his life went by while he was watching these magnanimous women going about being virtuous & accomplished. From Kamal Lata, Abhaya, Rajlakshmi or Pyaari - all these women were how women should be - strong, caring, loving, religious, pious and pure. Srikanta seems to be a slice of Sarat Chandra's own life & how the women in his life influenced him. They all loved him selflessly and he valued them though he could love them as passionately as they did. When women love someone they give everything - when man loves them he expects everything.
Beyond the man-woman relationship, Srikanta also talks about the gaps between rich & poor, ridiculous caste system, hollowness of Hindu society, fake brahmins, stinking traditions of dowry, widowhood, child marriage and cruel landlords... you can see the double standards of the society & the people who claim to be the epitome of this society. He also mentions that how in India society treats its women seprately from the men. How unmarried women tarnish family image and they are sold off for Rs 20 to men 10 times their age as wives. The society just started stagnating and could only get worse unless their is a revolution..
But what made me think was that all that Sarat mentioned has been happening still so in a 100 years nothing has really changed, same disease & caste plagued society. Same gaps in rich & poor. Same degradation & selling of women.. same ignorance & uncaring atttude... will the world ever change..

According to this Author, Every woman he meets falls in love with his good nature and kindness. Every angle he looks, women get attracted to him like a magnet. What the fuck?
The author is bringing Hinduism everywhere to belittle, And using wrong cooked up narratives to say why Hinduism is in decline.
I agree we had our own flaws, But the flaws he points out feels like nagging woman than a person trying to address.
His reasoning and his characters reason to bash hindhuisum is so appaling , It feels like author joined a book club full of jobless people . Talked nonsense for the whole day, perceived their nonsense as ultimate truth. Decide to spit out the venom through this book.
The author seems to live in an imaginary world where all women are attracted to his half baked nagging, But in reality the author might have been rejected throughout his life by every woman throughout his life. He decided to write this book where he is the hero, all woman are charmed by his kindness, Screwed logic . I always wondered why some Bengalis had bright revolutionary minds , after reading this books i have realized if those Bengalis didn't have revolutionary minds bengalis like srikantha would have sell its own people, culture and country to fulfill their narcissistic needs.

The story revolves around a wandering young man named Srikanta who has seen the world and wishes to share his experience with the readers. It is an unabashed memoir of Srikanta's life, in the choicest of words, garlanded with lyrical prose.
This 460 page saga (22 hour audiobook), written over a period of more than 16 years is divided in 4 chapters, each one loosely representing one of the four Karmas of Hindu philosophy. The first part represents Dharma (published in 1917). Young Srikanta is morally upright and always eager to straitjacket people in his preconceived notions of religious diktats. The second part represents Arth (1918). Srikanta travels to Burma, earns a living and meets new people who shape him into a man he wasn't before. The third part relates to Kama (1927). Srikanta and Rajlakshmi pretend to live like a married couple in a village. And the final part represents Moksha (1933). In this part emphasis is laid on spirituality and salvation through Kamal Lata, the Vaishnavi.
A lot has been talked about Tagore's women characters on various platforms, but seldom we talk about Sarat's women characters who are, if not more, equally complex. The book features many female characters- most of them based on Sarat Chandra had known personally. On one hand we have a character like Annada di who is ever sacrificing, while on other we have Abhaya who as she is rightly named is fearless. She is strong enough to abandon her abusive husband. Then we have Rajlakshmi aka Piyari Bai, a village girl who was forced by the wicked society, poverty and misfortune to accept the 'unholy profession'. But then comes Kamal Lata, a Vaishnavi who falls in love with Srikanta. The kaleidoscope of Sarat's women characters is vibrant, colorful, carries a spectrum of emotions and makes the reader wonder about each one of them.

Gives a good insight into the mindset of a Brahmin Bengali in the pre-independence era in India. Choosing between rationalism and age-old ritual of caste-ism, where and how does one begin? And how does the transition happen. The style of writing is decent, but I think this one was lost in translation. I am sure this would have been a 4.5 had I read this in the original language.

After Shankar's "Chowringhee" and Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's "Aranyak" if there was any book by a Bengali author who had touched my mortal senses in a savoury note, it was "Srikanta" by Sharatchandra Chatterjee. This book isn't just a work of fiction but a written document about a society in which we still dwell today. It's no doubt a masterpiece of Bengali literature. It has a myriad of charectors who represent a generation riddled with superstitions, ignorance and prejudices as well as a wide array of individuals who took the courage to break the mould.
On the surface, this may seem like the story of a wandering soul who thinks his individuality to be more significant than social conventions, thus he never felt comfortable to be binded by any so-called legitimate social structure. This might not seem something ground breaking on the surface, but let me tell you that not more than a mere hundred years ago, in the early 20th century India, a person nurturing this thought might get declared as a fool or a complete mad man.
Yet in the year 1917, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee made a protagonist who was never meant to be a protagonist in the traditional sense, like a fly on the wall, he comes, he observes and the more he observes the more he understands how deeply misguided we are as a society, especially in terms of its treatment towards a woman, as patriarchal neuroses becomes a desiese both amongst men and women, we are so blind by these age old conventions and conditions, hardly there is a room for one's individuality. We are knee deep in ignorance, but hey, we sure do love judging people...
What makes Srikanta, a riveting read is solely due to its nuanced, complex and well-crafted characters. It may seem a gross injustice if we don't talk about them.
At first, there's Indranath, a rogue of a boy who defies everyone, who's bravery and charm clearly titillates Srikanta's wanderlust soul. A fisherman and flute player by hoby he's one of the first individuals in Srikanta's life whom he admired as a friend and a philosophical guide. Srikanta's ideas on womanhood were first initiated by Ananda Didi, who's endurance against her husband's abuses awed and enraged him at the same time. Being only a mere teenager, he takes up the situation as the ideals of true womanhood.
Thus being said after a few years when he became a young man he meets his childhood friend Rajlakshmi alias Piyari Bai, he sees how slowly he starts having feelings for the nautch girl but his idealised mindset starts creating a bitter conflict, later when he comes to know of her hardships (as she was sold by her mother as a child and was proclaim dead to the people of her home town) and her will to fight on in a cruel world with a pure good hearted soul, he comes to realise that, all that is seen, might not be what it seems. It's better to be in someone's shoes before one gets to say something about someone. His affection for Piyari creates a huge crevice on his ideology conditioned by social conventions.
Abhaya on the other hand was the chief spokes person of Chatterjee's rage on social evils, especially on how the so-called Hindu society does a gross injustice towards its women. Srikanta sees how she defies social norms and disowns her abusive husband and openly lives with her lover. Srikanta deeply understands her pain and admires how bravely she stands against the struggles of her life with a partner who's association is seen as immoral and impure.
Then comes Kamal Lata, a Vaishnava, who is equally as brave and independent as Abhaya when she decides to leave her family and becomes an ascetic when they try to marry her off to a rapist.
We can see how each of these charectors are the archetypes of a modern rationalistic individual who stood their ground at the face of social adversities which are metted out on account of their gender. They can be termed as individuals who doesn't cry in the name of fate and rather strongly create their own. All of them neither care nor they feel themselves to be any less than the opposite gender. All except Rajlakshmi...
The problem with Rajlakshmi is that being deprived of so many things from such an early age, she's obsessed with the fear of loss. Srikanta was the new toy in her life which she never wanted to do away with, and like a toy she throws it and pets it on her own free will. Constant extremities of circumstance has made her afflicted with a kind of severe bipolar disorder, which makes her give polarising reactions to various incidents through out the book, for instance once she supports Abhaya's action of leaving her abusive husband and talks about men being cruel to women but then also she mentions the importance of a woman to endure sufferings and be chaste in terms of Hindu norms and conventions. She, like a destructive force, wrecks the soul of Srikanta, by trying to make him what he's not, a man to be bound in the shackles of a family. But she does have a certain point when she once states that we always talk about how a woman should be aware of her rights, but is it not equally important to make men understand how not to exploit their own? I would say she's a charector who is amidst a form of Stockholm syndrome in terms of regressive ideals...
You see, Srikanta and Rajlakshmi are not a romantic couple by any means because it is understandable that what passes between them is nothing beyond emotions of salvation and respect. Salvation from one's past and respect for each other's ideals and accomplishments through which both of them have a change in their mindset, one for the variably better and the other for the worse. They suffocate each other, yet they are drawn to one another as a habit and out of a sense of comfort. Even though not bound by any form of social contract or traditions. Hence, no doubt they are a tragic couple in Sharatchandra Chatterjee's work. They represent a confused generation like any generation of ours and other times, torn between society and individuality.
It's evident from this quote, "We live a snake and mongoose life, threatening to kill one another every minute. But since killing is punishable by law, we look for various ways to torture each other" What might have started out as a genuine affection thus ends as a bitter habit of coexistence.
Love can never be just born out of just respect and acquiring salvation of one's so-called sins from one another, it requires something else, something that can't be explicitly expressed in words, but it is something that those who have ever fallen in love will know. As for this reviewer, he is left in the dark...
Kamal Lata on the other hand is someone I feel Srikanta had truly fallen in love with. She really was the one with whom his soul was entwined like the roots of a tree in a forest with that of the others. Unrequited love may never have a better example. Their attraction for one another was evident from the start. He does feel a huge affection for her and was willing to submit to her. He has never wanted Rajlakshmi to be something more than a friend. It's frustrating to see how certain systems choke the path of an individual's happiness. This tragedy is the crux of Sarat Babu's novel.
Srikanta thus as a work of fiction, it questions a systematic conditioning of stagnant ideals of love, relationship, misogyny and patriarchy prevalent in a society which was as decadent then, as it is today. Thus, it can also be defined as a tragic tale of our modern society which is still stuck in a cycle of hapless existence. As millions like them through these paltry constraints, i.e., constraints as I see it, fail to realise their passions...
P.S. : But this in the end is fiction, there's still a part of me which really felt that the ending could've been a bit different :) If someone reads it, then they'll understand...

Srikanta is a tale of pre-1947 India crumpled in inner turmoil, caste & gender segregation as well as religious hypocrisy. With beautiful narratives and descriptions of the Indian landscape and its unique men and women, it is a story about a weak-willed man who dreams of a better world, yet is moved to inaction by his own inertia to do anything about it. Women come and go, moulding him according to their own ideas and he accepts them meekly. That this was written a 100-200 years back, owing to its surprisingly open discussions on love, sex and the concept of living together beyond the reach of marriage and society, is vey surprising. What is shocking is the sad fact that it's been 200 years and South Asian society is still in the same abject state. Caste segregation is still as brutal and abuse towards women, in the name of religion, patriarchy and marriage, is just as dominant. It seems our subcontinent's spiral of self-destruction will never cease and Sharatchandra's social documentary of the past still holds true in the modern 21st century.

This one lay untouched on my shelves for over 11 years, but finally happy to have read it. Beautiful images of 19th century Bengal through the eyes of the principal narrator, a rather morose and sickly individual with no ambition greater than where his emotions might take him. Sarat babu's love of flawed and decaying characters are evident throughout; each lovingly created with many layers and hues, such that it is impossible to have any fixed feeling about any of them. A splendid read, and if you are provasi Bengali like me, who cannot read it in the original, Aruna Chakravarti's translation captures the cadence of the language well, and feels authentic.

Sarat Chandra may be more famous for Devdas and Parineeta, courtesy Bollywood. But I was lucky enough to begin my journey into Sarat Da's world with his best work i.e. Srikanta.
The book is voluminous and a heavy read, as Sarat Chandra has a tendency to drift into philosophical meanderings every now and then. And yet, it is one of my most enjoyable, worthy and priced possession. Divided into four parts, the story revolves around a young man from the age of 15 to 30 plus. Narrative is in first person and there are glimpses of autobiographical elements. In short, if you are curious about Sarat Da, the man, do begin with this novel. It will give you a sneak peek into his inner world.

Srikanta is about an aimless wanderer. He goes wherever life takes him. He meets people from every walk of life. This book tells us about the Hindu religion and how people are judged by their caste. People get jobs based on their castes not on merit. This novel tells us that Indian people, specially people from lower castes, are tired of this system. It was an interesting book and it gave me a lot of knowledge about the Indian culture, which is an umbrella term for the spectrum of cultures present in india. I'm giving it 3.5.

Surely Srikant is one of the greatest book I have ever read. I am not qualified to write a review of such a great work of literature. I just wish I knew Bangla so that I could read it in its original language.

বাংল� সাহিত্যে� কয়েকট� রত্নের মধ্য� শরৎচন্দ্রে� না� শুধু উল্লেখযোগ্যই নয� বর� শরৎচন্দ্রে� লেখা ব্যতী� বাংল� সাহিত্� অনেকটা� অসম্পূর্ণ। বাংল� সাহিত্যে যতটুকু বিচর� থাকল� এরকম ক্লাসি� উপন্যাসে� রিভি� দেওয়া যায় ততখানি বিচর� যে আমার নে� � কথ� বলাই বাহুল্য। বই পড়ত� ভালবাস� এব� বাংল� সাহিত্যে� প্রত� অনুরাগ আছ�, এই ধারাবাহিকতায� ভেবেছিলা� কিছু ক্লাসি� উপন্যা� পড়ে ফেলব� প্রথমে� মাথায় আসলো শ্রীকান্তে� কথা। চারপর্বে� এই উপন্যা� গত কয়েকমাস� মন্ত্রমুগ্ধে� মত পড়েছি এব� শে� করার পর� আবেশ� হারিয়� গিয়েছি।
পুরো উপন্যা� বিশ্লেষণ করাট� অপ্রয়োজনীয় কারণ এই সুবিশা� উপন্যাসে পাঠক মাত্রই ভিন্� ভিন্� দি� উঠ� আসবে এব� সেটা পাঠকের দৃষ্টিকো� অনুযায়ী সম্পূর্ণ স্বতন্ত্� হওয়াটাই অত্যন্� স্বাভাবিক। আম� কয়েকট� দি� নিয়� বলতে চাই। প্রথমত উপন্যাসট� যে সময়কালে� প্রেক্ষাপট� লেখা হয়েছে তখ� বাঙালি� কিছুটা অন্ধকা� যু� চলছে� জাতপ্রথা, মারাত্মক মহামারী এব� আর� অনেক সামাজি� সমস্যায় বাংলার মানু� জর্জরিত। এম� অবস্থায় লেখক শ্রীকান্� চরিত্রটি� অবতারণ� করেন� প্রথ� পর্বের শুরু� দিকে ইন্দ্র নামক ভবঘুরে এক চরিত্রের সঙ্গ� শ্রীকান্তে� আশ্চর্� কিছু রোমাঞ্চক� অভিজ্ঞতা� অবতারণ� তিনি করেছেন� যা� বেশিরভাগটা� কিশো� বয়সের অসী� সাহস, অদম্� ইচ্ছাশক্তি� প্রকাশ ঘটায়। ইন্দ্র চরিত্রটি� অবদা� উপন্যাসে বে� গুরুত্বপূর্ণ� কারণ ইন্দ্রের মাধ্যম� শ্রীকান্তে� জীবন� যেসব অভিজ্ঞতা� সঞ্চার ঘট� তা শ্রীকান্তে� পরবর্তী জীবনের দর্শনক� অনেকটা� প্রভাবিত করেছে। মানু� নিজে� সংস্কারক� ছিন্� করেও যে আপ� সত্ত্বাক� ধর� রাখত� পারে, তা� উদাহরণ শ্রীকান্� উপন্যাসে অসংখ্য বা� এসেছে।
এর পর� উপন্যাসে যে উল্লেখযোগ্� চরিত্রের আবির্ভাব এই উপন্যাসে ঘটেছ�, তা� না� রাজলক্ষ্মী� বল� বাহুল্� যে শ্রীকান্তে� পর� রাজলক্ষ্মী চরিত্রটি� এই উপন্যাসে� একটা বড� অং� জুড়� আছ� এব� সেটা সঙ্গ� কারণেই� বাংল� সাহিত্যে� জগতে যে কট� স্মরণীয় চরিত্র আছ� তা� মধ্য� রাজলক্ষ্মীকে অন্যতম একজন বলাই যায়� তব� শ্রীকান্তে� সঙ্গ� রাজলক্ষ্মী� যে সম্পর্� সেটা লেখক সাধারণ কোনো নারী-পুরুষে� বন্ধনে না বেঁধ�, বেঁধেছেন এক মহান উপাখ্যানের মাধ্যমে। � উপাখ্যানকে সাধারণ প্রেমে� থেকে অনেকটা� আলাদাভবে তিনি উপস্থাপন করেন� এই এক রাজলক্ষ্মী চরিত্রের মাধ্যম� তিনি দেখিয়েছেন যে স্নেহময়ী নারী ইচ্ছ� করলে কখনো মা, কখনো গৃহিনী, কখনো সেবিকা আবার প্রেমিকা� হয়ে উঠতে পারেন। উপন্যাসে� সময়কা� হিসা� করলে এই চিন্তা এব� দর্শ� যে তা� মন� ঠায় পেয়েছিল, সেটা তা� অন্তর্দৃষ্টি� গভীরতার ব্যাপারট� আমাদেরকে স্মর� করিয়ে দেয়� এছাড়া� উপন্যাসে উপস্থি� আর� � টি নারী চরিত্রের কথ� না বললে� নয�! তারা হলেন অন্নদাদিদি, অভয়� এব� কমললতা��� তারা� নি� নি� অবস্থা� থেকে স্�-মহিমায� উজ্জ্ব� এব� তখনকার সময়ের বাঙালি নারীদে� অবস্থা� এব� অধিকার-বো� সম্পর্কে আমাদেরকে সচেত� করে। শ্রীকান্তে� সাথে তাদে� সংলা� আমাদের সমাজ সম্পর্কে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অর্থ বহ� করে। উপন্যাসে� সমাপ্ত� নিয়� অনেকের মনেই দ্বন্দ্ব রয়েছে� তব� আম� মন� কর� লেখক যতটুকু ঘটনা অসমাপ্� রেখেছে� তা পাঠকের জন্যই। হয়ত তিনি চেয়েছেন বাকি ঘটনাটুকু পাঠক-মাত্রই নি��ের মনের কল্পনা থেকে� দর্শ� করুক�
উপন্যাসট� থেকে কিছু উক্ত� বা সংলা� এখান� তুলে ধরছি�
১। “আমি সমস্তই দেখিলা�, সমস্� বুঝিলাম। যে গোপনেই আসিয়াছি�, তাহাকে গোপনেই যাইত� দিলাম। কিন্তু এই নির্জন নিশীথে সে যে তাহা� কতখানি আমার কাছে ফেলিয়� রাখিয়� গে�, তাহা কিছু� জানিতে পারি� না।�

A whole ride of human nature and philosophy on our social structure. A bit feministic in some points, but those were really necessary. Some thoughts were out of this world kind of stuff. Had a harm time getting into the story. It was a must read

An ordinary tale of wanderings, of emotional frictions, of pre-independent India's rural Bengal life and society, of questions on the face of illogical social norms, of sufferings of ordinary people, of love and romance of ordinary people... an ordinary tale told in an extraodinary way...
The only regret is Sarat promised his publisher at 'Bharatborsho' that if he likes the 4th part of Srikanta then Sarat will write a 5th part covering Abhaya's life and end the novel. But Sarat never wrote it.

অনেকদিনে� শখ ছি� শ্রীকান্� পড়ার। সে শখ এতটা বিতৃষ্ণা� সাথে মিটব� আগ� ভাবিনি� খু� কষ্ট কর� শে� করলাম। সবসময় মন� হচ্ছিল হয়ত� এবার কিছু ভা� হব�; আরেকটু সময় দিতে হবে। কিন্তু না�, খুবই হতাশ হলাম�
শুরু� দিকে অবশ্� ভালো� লাগছিল� ইন্দ্রনা�, অন্নদাদিদি, এমনক� রাজলক্ষ্মীও। একবা� শুধু মন� হয়েছি� শ্রীকান্তর শৈশব যে� খু� তাড়াতাড়ি শে� হয়ে গেল। যা� সে ঠি� আছে।

July 4, 2024I am not fond of writing or reading book reviews, as my beliefs haven't permitted it yet. However, I am writing this for a specific reason: years from now, I want to look back and pat myself on the back for starting it.
This is my first-ever, longest fiction piece. It took me over 50 extended days to finish, but I learned a lot during this time, both about reading books and about myself.
Until 50 days ago, I was afraid to buy books longer than 325 pages, and to your surprise, I didn't buy this one either. However, my bold move has broken that barrier, allowing me to welcome many such hefty books in the future.
This particular book has proven to be special for I didn't buy it; I 'stole' it (as I like to call it) from a Penguin giveaway that allowed one per person, yet I managed to gather as many as my hands could hold—surprisingly, no one objected!
Now, I am confident that with a little discipline and a lot of enthusiasm, I can gracefully read books over 500 pages.
I have mixed feelings because, although I've shattered my glass ceiling, I didn't want this book to end. Never mind! Many more are to come.

Until 50 days ago, I was afraid to buy books longer than 325 pages, and to your surprise, I didn't buy this one either. However, my bold move has broken that barrier, allowing me to welcome many such hefty books in the future.
This particular book has proven to be special for I didn't buy it; I 'stole' it (as I like to call it) from a Penguin giveaway that allowed one per person, yet I managed to gather as many as my hands could hold—surprisingly, no one objected!
Now, I am confident that with a little discipline and a lot of enthusiasm, I can gracefully read books over 500 pages.
I have mixed feelings because, although I've shattered my glass ceiling, I didn't want this book to end. Never mind! Many more are to come.

A painfully underwhelming account of a vain, vacillating, indecisive, misogynist man � imbued with the perceived superiority of his Brahmin caste. Prone to prolonged unexplained fevers on any exposure to bad weather or adverse traveling conditions, yet immune to contagions like cholera, tuberculosis and bubonic plague. Imagines he’s God’s gift to womankind � during his itinerant meaningless life he comes across beautiful woman who throw themselves at his feet.
This over-hyped book failed to touch me � maybe it was poorly translated � the narrative does tend to jump erratically at times.

পিয়ারির মাঝে ফুটে উঠ� সে� রাজলক্ষ্মী,যে বৈচি ফুলে� মালা গেঁথ� শৈশব� পরিয়ে দি� তা� দেবতার গলায়। সে� ভালেবাসায় সন্ন্যাসী হয়ে বাকি জীবন কাটিয়� দেয়া।
শ্রীকান্তে� বার্মা চল� যাওয়া� সময় লক্ষ্মী� হৃদয়ে যেনো বাজছিল�..

"আমার এই ‘ভবঘুরে� জীবনের অপরাহ্� বেলায় দাঁড়াইয়া ইহার� একটা অধ্যায� বলিত� বসিয়া আজ কত কথাই না মন� পড়িতেছে!" -- এভাবেই শুরু হয়েছে শরৎচন্দ্� চট্টোপাধ্যয়ের কালজয়ী উপন্যা� শ্রীকান্ত। একেবার� শুরু থেকে প্রতিট� শব্দ, প্রতিট� বাক্� অসধারণ, প্রাঞ্জলভাবে, গভী� আবেগ মিশিয়� লেখা যে অবার বিস্ময়ে মন প্রা� ডুবে যায়�
সত্য� বলতে কি আমার বিচারে "শ্রীকান্�"� বাংল� সাহিত্যে� শ্রেষ্� উপন্যাস। কি নে� শ্রীকান্তে? প্রে�, রোমাঞ্�, ট্রাজেডি, কমেড�, দর্শ�, ধর্ম�
এই উপন্যাসে এম� কিছু বাক্�, এম� কিছু কথ� রয়েছে যা চিরন্তন। যেমন একদি� রাতে� বেলায় শ্রীকান্� এব� ইন্দ্রনা� নদী দিয়� যাওয়া� সময় কলেরায� মর� একটি শিশু� মৃতদেহ নিয়� জন্ত�-জানোয়ার টানাটানি� দেখত� পায়� � দৃশ্� দেখে অকুতোভয় ইন্দ্রনাথে� চোখে� জল এস� গিয়েছিল� ইন্দ্রনা� শিশুটিকে মাটিতে পুতে রাখা� সিদ্ধান্� নিয়� শ্রীকান্তক� মৃতদেহটি ধরার জন্য অনুরোধ করলে শ্রীকান্� সেটি ধরতে বা ছুঁত� যখ� দ্বিধাবো� করছি� তখ� ইন্দ্রনা� শ্রীকান্তক� বলেছিল, ‘আরে � যে মড়া, মড়া� আবার জা� কী? এই যেমন আমাদের ডিঙিটা-এর কী জা� আছ�? আমগা�, জামগাছ যে কাঠেরই তৈরি হো�-এখ� ডিঙি ছাড়� এক� কে� বলবে না� এও তেমনি।�

শ্রীকান্তে� শৈশব-কৈশোরে� মাঝে নিজে� ছোটবেলাট� খুঁজ� পা�, এব� শৈশবের অপূর্ণ ইচ্ছাগুল� শ্রীকান্�-ইন্দ্রের কাজগুলোর মধ্য দিয়� খুঁজ� পাই। যৌবনের শ্রীকান্�-রাজলক্ষ্মী রসায়নটা আমার মত� বিশ্� সাহিত্যে� অন্যতম সেরা রোমান্টি� রসায়ন� রাজলক্ষ্মী আমার কাছে শান্�, স্নিগ্� প্রেমময়ী বিদ্রোহে� প্রতিমূর্তি। বইটিতে বর্ণিত শ্রীকান্তে� মত স্বাধী�, ভবঘুরে একটা জীবনের জন্য কতদি� গুমর� মরেছ� (এখনও মর�, কল্পনায়)� সাহসের অভাব! স্বপ্ন দেখি, কো� একদি� শ্রীকান্তে� মত সাহস যোগাতে পারলেই সব পিছুটা� ছিঁড়ে বেরিয়� পড়ব একলা�

"Aimless" is the word to describe the central character.It describes his trysts with different women..how he thinks about the caste system,poverty etc.The amazing part is that he knows everything but does nothing about it other than sitting with the sick patients..He does not work,cannot take any decisions,keeps wavering etc etc..Too long a story and not worth the read..

July 10, 2016Not rating it since I gave up on it after around 50%. Written much ahead of its time, the women characters are portrayed strongly. Their thoughts and conversations are very enriching. I could not give continuous reading time to this book and kept loosing the grip on the characters. Would surely pick it up again after some years when I feel mature enough to handle this.
