Woody Allen

276books3,084followers
Noted American actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker Woody Allen, originally Allen Stewart Konigsberg explored the neuroses of the urban middle class in comedies of manners, such as Annie Hall (1977) and Deconstructing Harry (1997).

This director, jazz musician, and playwright thrice won Academy Award. His large body of work mixes satire, wit and humor in the most respected and prolific cerebral style in the modern era. Allen directs also in the majority of his movies. For inspiration, Allen draws heavily on literature, philosophy, psychology, Judaism, European cinema, and city of New York, where he lives.

Reading the script of a cult film is always an opportunity to immerse yourself in a text by having the images scrolling through your head.
With "Annie Hall," Woody Allen is at his best. I read somewhere that the film is described as "A Romeo and Juliet in the land of analysts." I find this summary rather well-regarded.
Like its author, Alvy Singer is a neurotic New York comedian who has somewhat succeeded but is in his 40s. Despite being in analysis for fifteen years, he is obsessed with sex and death. He has already divorced twice. But beyond the biography of Alvy Singer, his meeting with Annie Hall is at the heart of the subject. It is, therefore, a love story or, more precisely, the difficulty of lasting romantic relationships.
Annie has everything to be the ideal companion; she is as dizzy as he is distressed. He will lead her into metaphysical discussions and move by her singing talents. The couple's on-screen crisp buns would appear to reflect their arguments, united in reality around the film's time (1977).
What is surprising in this film and which I love are the special effects that constantly shift the unfolding of the story: fantasies come true, several images come together to tell the life of Annie and Alvy in parallel, Annie splits in two when she makes love and walks around her apartment overwhelmed by boredom, passers-by are taken to task to testify and respond. A whole bunch of tips gives this shameless and scathing confession on the private life of the king of Jewish humor a special status.

Annie Hall: Screenplay, Woody Allen
Annie Hall is a 1977 American romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay he co-wrote with Marshall Brickman. Produced by Allen's manager, Charles H. Joffe, the film stars the director as Alvy "Max" Singer, who tries to figure out the reasons for the failure of his relationship with the film's eponymous female lead, played by Diane Keaton in a role written specifically for her.
The comedian Alvy Singer is trying to understand why his relationship with Annie Hall ended a year ago. Growing up in New York, he vexed his mother with impossible questions about the emptiness of existence, but he was precocious about his innocent sexual curiosity. Annie and Alvy, in a line for The Sorrow and the Pity, overhear another man deriding the work of Federico Fellini and Marshall McLuhan; McLuhan himself steps in at Alvy's invitation to criticize the man's comprehension. That night, Annie shows no interest in sex with Alvy. Instead, they discuss his first wife, whose ardor gave him no pleasure. His second marriage was to a New York writer who didn't like sports and was unable to reach orgasm. With Annie, it is different. The two of them have fun making a meal of boiled lobster together. He teases her about the unusual men in her past. He met her playing tennis doubles with friends. Following the game, awkward small talk led her to offer him first a ride up town and then a glass of wine on her balcony. There, what seemed a mild exchange of trivial personal data is revealed in "mental subtitles" as an escalating flirtation. Their first date follows Annie's singing audition for a night club ("It Had to be You"). He suggests they kiss first to get it out of the way. After their lovemaking that night, Alvy is "a wreck", while she relaxes with a joint. ....

I am a huge fan of Woody Allen and 鈥淎nnie Hall鈥 is my favourite rom-com movie ever (probably ex-aequo with Todd Solondz' "Happiness").
The script is brilliant because it embraces Allen's central themes: New York; Fear of death; Existentialism; Trust; Love and Pessimism..

Actually it is more than a comic flick about a quirky romantic relationship. Even if it was considered to be the greatest comedy film of all time (), the film was actually subtitled as "a nervous romance", or as Susan Benson has put it: Annie Hall is one of the truest, most bittersweet romances on film.
(I recommend her synopsis of the film )
The film is actually both funny and sad at the same time: while watching it (or eventually, reading its screenplay) you'll laugh at the numerous witty expressions and awkward conversations, but "there is also a great deal of hurt within the film"
(Tim Radford, in a review published by The Guardian when the movie was released ) and once it ends it leaves you in a morose mood.

Furthermore, the movie was originally to be entitled Anhedonia, that is, 鈥渢he clinical inability to experience happiness鈥, according to WA in one of his conversations with Bukckman who wrote his biography titled Woody Allen On Woody Allen. However, Woody changed it for he feared that it would be labeled as intellectual and that most people would think it鈥檚 a european movie.

The movie starts with a scene where Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) recites an opening monologue to tell the story of the failure of his relationship with Annie Hall:

ALVY:
There's an old joke. Uh, two elderly
women are at a Catskills mountain
resort, and one of 'em says: "Boy,
the food at this place is really
terrible." The other one says, "Yeah,
I know, and such... small portions."
Well, that's essentially how I feel
about life. Full of loneliness and
misery and suffering and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly.
The-the other important joke for me
is one that's, uh, usually attributed
to Groucho Marx, but I think it
appears originally in Freud's wit
and its relation to the unconscious.
And it goes like this-I'm
paraphrasing: Uh.. "I would never
wanna belong to any club that would
have someone like me for a member."
That's the key joke of my adult life
in terms of my relationships with
women. Tsch, you know, lately the
strangest things have been going
through my mind, 'cause I turned
forty, tsch, and I guess I'm going
through a life crisis or something,
I don't know. I, uh... and I'm not
worried about aging. I'm not one o'
those characters, you know.
Although I'm balding slightly on top, that's
about the worst you can say about
me. I, uh, I think I'm gonna get
better as I get
older, you know?

I think I'm gonna be the balding
virile type, you know, as opposed to
say the, uh, distinguished gray, for
instance, you know? 'Less I'm neither
o' those two. Unless I'm one o' those
guys with saliva dribbling out of
his mouth who wanders into a cafeteria with a shopping bag screaming about socialism.
(Sighing)
Annie and I broke up and I-I still
can't get my mind around that. You
know, I-I keep sifting the pieces of
the relationship through my mind and-and examining my life and tryin' to
figure out where did the screw-up
come, you know, and a year ago we
were... tsch, in love. You know,
and-and-and... And it's funny, I'm
not-I'm not a morose type. I'm not
a depressive character.
I-I-I, UH,
(Laughing)
you know, I was a reasonably happy
kid, I guess. I was brought up in
Brooklyn during World War II.

* To watch the scene:

I would quote all the script .. as Roger Ebert wrote in the introduction of his review: "Annie Hall" contains more intellectual wit and cultural references than any other movie ever" . (I think it was his favourite Woody Allen movie, besides "Crimes & Misdemeanors" and "Hannah & her Sisters" which he also rated with 4/4.. He was however really harsh when reviewing his recent films).
Most of these cultural references mentionned by Ebert could be found in a list made by Peter Cowie in his book Annie Hall.
/book/show/5...

Here are some quotes among my many other favorites:

~鈥淚 was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics exam; I looked into the soul of the boy sitting next to me.鈥

~"Sex with you is really a Kafkaesque experience."

~"I can't get with any religion that advertises in Popular Mechanics"

~"Hey, Harvard makes mistakes too, Kissinger taught there!"

~"I was depressed at that time. I was in analysis. I was suicidal as a matter of fact and would have killed myself, but I was in analysis with a strict Freudian, and, if you kill yourself, they make you pay for the sessions you miss."

El libro se resume en:

鈥淚t reminds me of that old joke- you know, a guy walks into a psychiatrist's office and says, hey doc, my brother's crazy! He thinks he's a chicken. Then the doc says, why don't you turn him in? Then the guy says, I would but I need the eggs. I guess that's how I feel about relationships. They're totally crazy, irrational, and absurd, but we keep going through it because we need the eggs.鈥

Annie Hall 鈥 Screenplay by Woody Allen 鈥 this has been included on some of the most important lists of Best Movies, from The New York Times to Variety, you find on my blog a few reviews on other Allen films

8 out of 10

This used to be one of my favorite motion pictures, and there should not be any change, except some the innuendo, not all of it proved, yet a lot of the personal life of Woody Allen has become public in the meantime, and what with marrying the adopted daughter of his wife, seeing his films again is a different experience now

- Hannah and Hers Sisters is very good

Nevertheless, take the scenes with the children, at the beginning of Annie Hall 鈥 and for that matter, in any Woody Allen movie 鈥 you can try and be 鈥榝unny鈥 about it, if it is gruesome humor, and say about the context

- 鈥業 hope they took good care of those little people鈥

If the man was so inclined 鈥 he married this very young woman, not quite his daughter, but still, the adopted child of his wife, and they fought for so long, Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, by the way, what contrasting choices did she make, she was in a relationship, maybe the spouse of鈥rank Sinatra and there is a story with that
Robert Evans wrote The Kid Stays in The Picture, about his involvement in movies, as actor, producer and head of Paramount

- He was the man behind The Godfather, Chinatown, Rosemary鈥檚 Baby and other great motion pictures

Mia Farrow has the leading role in Rosemary鈥檚 Baby, but Frank Sinatra 鈥 a chauvinist we gather 鈥 wanted her to end her participation, and abandon the movie, which she refused, and then this went on to become a big hit, commercially and with the critics, while the film Sinatra was doing tanked, hence the idea:

- Mia Farrow wanted a two-page ad, on one side the takings of Rosemary鈥檚 Baby and on the other, the meagre box office of the Sinatra flop

Intellectuals by Paul Johnson is a marvelous book, the author explains the fact that great people have a very dark side, Leo Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen, Ernest Hemingway, Jean Jacques Rousseau were terrible in their private lives, especially the latter.
Ego, we could look at Annie Hall and other Woody Allen works and be tolerant, perhaps, only as I said, I cannot help but remember his penchant 鈥 euphemisms 鈥 for very young women something that he puts in his movies over, and over again

Some works - such as Broadway Danny Rose - do not follow the same stereotype, nevertheless, Manhattan and others have this much older chap, who seduces the young female, and that is Allen projecting his fantasies

- That is how it looks, with hindsight

Some thespians that have worked with him have distanced and regretted the collaboration, albeit Woody Allen was once so celebrated 鈥 Annie Hall won Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director 鈥 both for Woody Allen 鈥 and Best Actress in a Leading Role, for Diane Keaton, she was so fantastic back then, only she made some really bad pictures after that
There was this story about Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty and maybe Peter Fonda, who made a bet concerning her and their charms 鈥 I will not put it here, maybe someday, the way this Orange Emperor works, stating he will take the Panama Canal, Greenland, and yesterday, Gaza, who knows鈥

- Maybe he will annex this place too, and then he will put me in charge

However, that means I have to be careful with my public notes鈥h, wait, it does not work this way, the more offensive one is, the better chances to get a duchy, some domain, look at the crazy Kennedy Junior, the woman to lead the NSA, or the drunkard head of the Pentagon鈥

Now for my standard closing of the note with a question, and invitation 鈥 maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this 鈥 as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

There is also the small matter of working for AT&T 鈥 this huge company asked me to be its Representative for Romania and Bulgaria, on the Calling Card side, which meant sailing into the Black Sea wo meet the US Navy ships, travelling to Sofia, a lot of activity, using my mother鈥檚 two bedrooms flat as office and warehouse, all for the grand total of $250, raised after a lot of persuasion to the staggering $400鈥ith retirement ahead, there are no benefits, nothing鈥t is a longer story, but if you can help get the mastodont to pay some dues, or have an idea how it can happen, let me know

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is

Some favorite quotes from To The Hermitage and other works

鈥楩iction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life鈥ts actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound鈥here are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions鈥nlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed鈥hat's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense鈥s random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find鈥ew stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author鈥︹€

禄. Y el tipo le replica: 芦Lo har铆a pero es que necesito los huevos禄. En fin, yo creo que eso expresa muy bien lo que siento acerca de las relaciones entre las personas. 驴Saben? Son completamente irracionales, disparatadas, absurdas y鈥 pero, ah, creo que las seguimos manteniendo porque, ah, la mayor parte de nosotros necesitamos los huevos"

One can learn a thing or two from Woody Allen.
All the accolades and praise encouraged me to pick up this script. I was hoping to get some valuable insights or life changing epiphanies during the couple of hours of reading.
I enjoyed the beginning and ending, but I often got frustrated the rest of the time. There were too many things going on for me and too much of him...
I sympathize more with laconic and restful authors

" era stato grandioso rivedere Annie, no? Mi resi conto che donna fantastica era e di quanto fosse divertente solo conoscerla. E io pensai a quella vecchia barzelletta, sapete... Quella dove uno va dallo psichiatra e dice:
禄, e quello risponde: 芦e poi a me le uova chi me le fa?禄.

Halfway through, I knew I was reading a masterpiece. I saw the movie once about ten years ago, and I loved it. Some scenes have stuck with me ever since, and as I read, I remembered others. There were even moments I鈥檇 completely forgotten that felt like I was experiencing them for the first time. It made the whole experience amazing.

I鈥檝e skimmed a few pages of scripts from some of my favorite films before, but this was my first time sitting down and reading an entire script. It was incredible.

It was a smart move by Woody Allen to cowrite the story with Marshall Brickman鈥攊t definitely made it stronger. I鈥檇 assume it also helped Allen grow as a filmmaker later in his career.

this is such a good screenplay.

I read the final draft, rather than the version they put on screen. Nonetheless, while the ending of this draft was not the same as the film, a lot of the charm that I found in the movie still remained
